THREE EASY SKINCARE SECRETS I JUST CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT

easy skincare secrets 12 | by the skinny confidentialeasy skincare secrets 2 | by the skinny confidential

Today I want to discuss a very, VERY important part of all our lives I’m sure: SKIN.

That’s right, skin is so important that it’s almost NUTS that anyone would avoid taking care of their skin.

Here’s the thing: people go to the gym, they work their ass off, & they keep their homes clean but then they neglect their skin? I DON’T GET IT.

The weird thing is, it doesn’t have to be a difficult task.

In fact, my whole skin regime is rather simple. Embarrassingly so…?

Sometimes life gets so overwhelmingly crazy that skincare is the last thing on anyone’s mind. So I’m going to share 3 easy, simple skincare tips that MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE in the world. Really, give me two weeks with these three tips & you won’t believe the changes in your skin.

Oh yah it’s true, I have to be honest here: I haven’t had a pimple in months…I take care of my skin ( the largest organ in the body ) with simple tips that really take 5 seconds. Not trying to brag here because trust me I’ve had my fair share of pimples, just trying to share what’s worked for me!

Here’s my top secret sauce:

1.) Get an ice roller.

Yes, you just read a post on this but I can’t STRESS the importance of an ice roller for every single person on the planet. There’s no downside. None. If you don’t have an ice roller & want to get right into it. Grab some ice & throw it on your face in the morning. This may sound intense but I prefer INTENSE, INSANE temperatures, you know? Really the colder, the hotter the better. Every morning I wake up & use an ice roller. EVERY morning. It sort of sets my skin. I use it even before I go to bed. Plus, it provides lymphatic drainage. You really can’t lose with an ice roller.

2.) OIL it UP.

I’ve been preaching oils for YEARS. They’re my MAIN, RIDE OR DIE skincare go-to. Recently Burt’s Bees sent me their 100% natural Cleansing Oil with coconut & argan oils and I was hooked. I’ve been using it to take my makeup off, oil cleanse, & even post-shower. Basically it’s oil that cleanses the skin without the nasty residue. Think of this step as nutrition for the skin. I put this oil on in the morning to set my foundation & at night to remove my makeup AND after my makeup is off. It’s super versatile, you know. Oils work for all skin-types. Watch the video for more info. Plus, it smells divine, YUM.

3.) Gelatin, gelatin, gelatin.

Firstly, it promotes collagen ( GOODBYE WRINKLES, K ). Supermodels everywhere swear by it. Make sure you’re getting a gelatin pill that doesn’t have extra added shit. I recommend this one. I take 1 to 2 a day with my trusty probiotic. Gelatin gives you that plump, moisturized look we all love…well at least that’s the look I LOVE. You know that very fresh, young look. I swear it’s a game-changer. You can read more on gelatin here.

So yes, it’s just really that simple.

Very random tips, but that’s what you come here for, random tips. These tips work, trust me. I’ve tried them all myself.

This subject is SO very important that I even went & created a little video for you guys:

So the truth is it’s 2016 & no one has time. The whole Korean skincare thing was too gnarly for me because it took forty-five minutes. Like who has an extra forty-five minutes? Not I, said the fly.

Life is too difficult & too busy to be worried about your skin. Just literally set 3 minutes in the AM & 3 minutes in the PM for your skin and you’re golden.

And PLEASEEEEEEE, take your makeup off before you go to bed. No excuses on this one. There’s nothing worse…I mean nothing…than waking up with fake eyelashes stuck to your cheek or mascara running down your face. Plus, using oils to remove makeup takes legit 5 seconds so there’s really no excuse.

Not to sound like your mom here, but PLEASE take off your makeup!

Last tip: if you get a zit? Grab some tea tree oil. Put it on with a Q-Tip before you go to bed. Peace out, zits.

& the obvious: I always find when I’m working out, getting enough sleep, & drinking enough water…it shows in my skin. I know, ground-breaking, but I had to share it at least.

What’s your easy ( keep it easy! ) skincare tips? Anything that’s new & noteworthy? I’m also about vintage, back in the day tips too. Get crazy.

Off to bed, taking off my makeup first though…

  1. I need to get that ice roller! I love to ice my face in the morning when it’s all puffy! I use gelatin everyday for arthritic pain and I swear by it. It really works wonders! Thanks for sharing your awesome tips 🙂

    1. Of course! So glad you like the post Alexis! Have you tried the Burt’s Bee’s Oil? I’m seriously obsessed! xx

  2. Zinc old zinc!! At night after I apply my oil, I add a thin layer of cream (40% for baby rashes). By morning, all the blemishes are gone. I swear by it!

  3. I love using roeship oil mixed with frankincense essential oil as an eye treatment…amazing stuff! Love using essential oils in my skincare routine 🙂

    1. Hi Sara! OMG I love rosehip, I seriously spray it on Michael every day when he’s not paying attention. LOL! I love essential oils too, although I must say this Burts Bees oil is AMAZING. It’s definitely one of my favorites. xx

    1. Heidi, you must try the ice roller! It’s a total game changer. I’m not kidding! Try it and let me know what you think! xx

  4. Do you know much about the differences between coconut oil and the other oils you recommended? I tried cleansing with coconut oil and found it made my skin bumpy, so I’m hesitant to try other oils.

    1. Hi Katie! Yes you should use the oils for different things. I don’t use coconut oil for cleansing. I either use this Burt’s Bee’s cleansing oil, or I’ll use straight up jojoba oil. For makeup remover I’ll use coconut oil or grapeseed oil you just need a TINY bit. Think the size of an Advil pill. I hope this helps!! xx

  5. Hey Lauryn – It’s Kim, from this weekend’s Snapchat (you were my first SNAP ever and I had no idea if they’d even reach you, so I was SO HAPPY to get your response – you’ve really become my go-to for health/beauty advice and I wanted to thank you!). Anyway, as a product junkie who has spent SO MUCH money over the years on every new, latest, priciest skincare product, device, etc., I just recently decided to go back to simple and basic. I stumbled upon a Konjac sponge and I am in love! It gives just the right amount of exfoliation and deep cleaning, yet still feels so gentle. I just use it with my Fresh Soy Cleanser – I do one pass with my cleanser to get the initial grime off, then go back with a small drop on the sponge to really clean. Travels easy, no recharging, cheap, and effective.

    1. Kim, thank you so much for reading and I am truly honored to be your first SNAP! Isn’t Snapchat so fun? Seriously though, your comment really means a lot. I appreciate you reading and staying in touch! The Konjac sponge is great! Where do you get your soy cleanser? I am intrigued! Thanks lady! xx

  6. I keep meaning to order an ice roller! It’s on my to do list!
Question about using oil to remove make up – In the past when I’ve used coconut oil it kind of makes a smeary mess that I feel like I can’t get off unless I go back over with a cleanser. Is the burts bees oil different ?

    1. Hi Gina, try using less oil. I seriously use the size of an Advil pill. You don’t need very much at all, just enough to cover the area you’re trying to remove makeup from slightly. The Burt’s Bees oil is specifically designed to cleanse so it’s literally perfect. I would definitely recommend it if you’re not loving using straight up coconut oil. xx

  7. Great tips! Collagen/gelatin is seriously a major game changer. I will def check out the Burt’s Bees oils – such a great brand all around! My new go to which I am OBSESSED with is mixing coffee grounds and coconut oil & a few essential oils (I like cinnamon! Keeps things plump!) and mixing it into a paste and putting it on my under eye area. I let it sit for 10 mins, wipe up and it’s an instant pick me up! Caffeine is my fave for skin xx Shannon

    1. Hi Shannon, I agree! Burt’s Bees is great. Wait, I love your under eye mask idea! So good! Definitely going to try that. Thanks Shannon! xx

  8. Not I, said the fly.

LOL – like, legit couldn’t love you more.

I am so with you on this. The sleep, the water, the food. It shows IMMEDIATELY on my skin and face. It’s just everything. Plus stress – shows there too. I haven’t seen or heard of gelatin but I am checking it out. Plus I love Burt’s Bee’s.

Love the look here skinny girl

  9. I’ve been contemplating on using coconut oil on my face. Some say it clogs pores and can cause cystic acne. I’ll try argan oil instead 😀

    1. Hi Arinah! I’ve never had a problem but I also like to mix it with a little bit of water to thin it out. Try it! LMK what you think? xx

    1. Hi Dana, I use them all just depending on what I’m feeling. Coconut is definitely the most moisturizing so I use it on dry days. It’s also great for removing makeup. Argan is a little bit lighter so it’s great for every day use. Avocado is kind of the middle ground, I also love it for my hair! I hope this helps! xx

  10. Omg..I am obsessed w oil. I use coconut oil and almond oil as a moisturizer. Can’t live without it. My friends used to all make fun of me bc in 25 years I have never gone to bed without washing my face. Now at my ripe old age I still look 25 ?

    1. Hi Erika! That’s amazing. I know you how you feel, people were so confused when I was rubbing oil all over me. But it’s seriously SO important. Thanks for sharing <3 xx

  11. Love it! I’ve never heard of the ice roller, but I started using oils too and can tell a big difference in my skin.

    Cheers,
    Rachel

    1. Rachel, if you like oils you will LOVE the ice roller. It’s a total game changer. Order it! I promise you won’t be disappointed. xx

  12. Hi Lauryn!

I’m definitely gonna try the gelatin! However I can’t swallow pills!! I never was able to swallow these damn things so I bought an ice cube thingy so I can make jello and freeze it up in small portions! I even read about making these vitamin bombs with the gelatin!! You can add vitamins and stuff to the jello so you only have to eat the jello 1 or 2 a day and you’re done with all your supplements! Perfect for someone with a pill swallowing problem! And for all the girl bosses that need to keep there routine simple and quick 🙂

    Love,
    Richelle

    1. WOW! That is such an inventive idea Richelle. I will definitely have to try that!

Another idea for you since you can’t swallow pills is to drink bone broth! I talked about it here: http://goo.gl/cDMQRA

      xx

    1. Yes you need to get one Lindsay! Let me know what you think once you try it. I’m obsessed with mine!!

      xx

  13. Great post! i use coconut oil to take my eye makeup off/ moisturize/ for everything! Also very interested in buying an ice roller now!!

    1. AH! I cannot wait for you to try it. Let me know how it works for you Courtney! It really is the best tool.

      xx

  14. I have to say that after reading your ice roller post I bought one and it has been a GAME CHANGER. My skin looks more smooth and bright. I am so sold on this so THANK YOU GIRL! I also love using cleansing oils. I started using them when I lived in Korea. I disagree with you about the Korean skincare regime. I do a “Korean” skincare regime because of what I learned about skincare while living in Korea. It really is not a 12 step thing for everyone and they recommend a set of steps but not every step is for every person. Some steps are even a sheet mask 1-2 times a week. So it is not as long and complex as many people think. Just thought I would share!

    1. SO glad you have been loving the ice roller Melanie! Agreed – total game changer!! What is your Korean skincare regime? I’d love some tips!!

      xx

  15. You should do a post on dermablading! where the facialist basically shaves your face lol. It’s awesome you’re so glow-y after and makeup goes on amazingly!

    1. I tried face shaving and loved it so I will definitely look into dermablading! Have you tried face shaving? Thanks for the tip and suggestion Jade!
      xx

  16. Does coconut oil work for taking off make up? I love using it on my skin, i.e. my legs after shaving and most nights before bed but I did not think about it in regards to removing make up. Thoughts?

    Thanks, love this advice!! xo

    1. Coconut oil can work for taking off make up if you use a small amount. You don’t need a lot, just enough to cover the area you’re removing makeup from. I use the size of an Advil pill! However, if you don’t like how the works seriously try the Burt’s Bees oil. It’s specifically designed to cleanse and remove makeup! Let me know what works for you Logan!

      xx

    1. I can’t wait for you to try both items Danielle. They are total game changers!! I LOVE them! Let me know how your experience goes.
      xx

  17. Hey Lauryn! All of the gelatin links lead me to a powder, where can I please find a link to the capsule?
    Thanks dear

  18. Hi Lauryn! Is there a difference between gelatin capsules and collagen peptides? Thanks for the tips! 🙂

  19. Hi Lauryn! Do you have any other favorite gelatin pills? The ones you recommended are currently unavailable on amazon. I need to get on this train STAT! Thanks for sharing!

  20. Since the gelatin capsules help your hair and nails grow, will it cause body hair to grow as well I’m guessing? I’ve been having laser hair removal done for the last few years and wouldn’t want to reverse those results!

    1. I don’t think so. Body hair is usually ruled by your hormones, so any major changes to your hormones (e.g. pregnancy, menopause) could cause hair to come back. I would think the effects of gelatin would only apply to your current hair growth.

  21. oo I love Burt’s Bees! They make lovely products and are super affordable. I’m obsessive about face oils and I definitely think that’s helped keep my skin looking super youthful 🙂

  22. When do you typically use the ice roller? Before cleansing? After cleansing, but before moisturizing? I thought that cold causes pores to close and the moisturizer won’t sink in, but I may be wrong.

    Thanks!

  23. Great video! It’s so important to take care of our skin. I am committing to drinking 90oz of water a day M-F. I seriously want great skin before my wedding in November, so I am going to implement these tips too! My own question for you Lauryn is about hair. If I straighten my hair and want it to be straight the next day I don’t want to put it in a ponytail holder at night. But if I don’t, it sticks around my face and I wake up with acne. Ugh! Any tips here would be awesome. Thanks!

  24. The ice roller is a game changer! THANK YOU for introducing me to it. I have been getting a lot of dental work done lately so it has helped with that, and the skin benefits are a bonus! I love it after a DIY gelatin mask with EOs 🙂

PS- I’m addicted to your podcasts and have been consuming them lately. You guys had me laughing out loud when I got my lashes filled the other week when I was listing to the one you talked about your husband and the yoga classes. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Thanksgiving story.

  25. During a recent facial, the woman doing it said that my skin type worked better with a more traditional facewash vs oil because it needs the wash to reset the skin’s PH. Does this sound legit / is it a reason to skip this whole oil cleansing trend?

  26. How do you moisturize with coconut oil in the bath? It’s a mess. I know it’s great and I need something for my body because it’s so dry!
