OMG FACIALS.
You want my REAL opinion? Wait, I feel like you KNOW I’m going to give you my REAL opinion already though? But really, I have a very strong opinion about this one. Especially when it comes to facials.
A lot of people may not agree. But we’ve been here before & we will navigate it again? We’re good, right? This is a place to discuss, connect, & chill.
SO FACIALS.
Shocker: I don’t think they’re a luxury.
Like, at all really.
In fact, to me- they’re a necessity.
I like a facial once a week.
GASP, OMG, WHAT, ARE YOU KIDDING. NO WAY.
Hear me out before you judge.
I like them once a week because I don’t really care about spending money on shoes, handbags, or belts.
I care about spending money on my skin.
My skin is with me with forever. That handbag that goes out of style in a year BORES me. I could care less about having the latest shoe if my skin looks dry. Oh & the latest belt? YAWN- BUT LIKE how does my skin look?
PRIORITIES, ya know?
( Don’t get me wrong- I like nice things, but I love my skin more! ).
So I spend my clothes fund a lot on my skin- I love youthful, plump, dewy skin every second. My business has to do with skin. So yah, I get a facial once a week. Sometimes twice a month. Sometimes more. It depends, you know?
If we’re going deep here, I like to also work while I’m getting a facial ( shout out to Mo at Heal Thy Goddess beauty collective in San Diego- YOU KNOW ; ) ). I think of it as an hour to multi-task. The main point is: I GET A FACIAL ONCE A WEEK WHICH IS ESSENTIALLY MAINTENANCE FOR MY SKIN.
And that really is how I think about it: maintenance.
ANYWAY. LET’S PROVIDE SOME VALUE HERE, SHALL WE?
A bit of back story for you. I USED TO THINK IT WAS WEIRD TO GET FACIALS ONCE A WEEK. Now I just don’t care what people think ( this TOPIC is for another post- if you want it? TRUST ME, practice putting yourself out there on the Internet & it makes you not care ). I THINK I should do what works for me, & you should do what works for you. And facials- work for me.
Getting specific on MY WHY: I’m sure you’ve heard it before if you’re a TSC reader BUT I have had jaw surgery. Double jaw surgery. Surgery where I was swollen. Swollen AS FUCK for two years. Like identity crisis swollen? You know what I mean? You don’t? You’re lucky. It was horrid. ANYWAY. The surgery made me very much aware of inflammation in my face. Jaw surgery DOES THAT TO YOU! So with everything I went through for years, I discovered a lot of tricks. Tricks of the trade, if you will. One of which is, FACIALS. And they’re so legit. So legit in fact- they’re like workouts for the skin. And workouts should be done regularly.
This source states: “I totally get why the skin experts consider facials to be regular complexion maintenance—kind of like car tune-ups for our face. Regular facials can help combat the toll stress, the environment, and some of our guilty habits take on our skin. And there is plenty to be said for that fresh, dewy glow and satin-soft skin post-facial.”
So if you’re going to do the facial thing, let’s talk post-facial tips. Because we want to preserve the benefits, right?
THINGS TO AVOID POST-FACIAL:
1.) Picking at skin:
Your skin is super sensitive after a facial sooooo STOP WITH THE PICKING THE SKIN UP CLOSE IN THE MIRROR THING. This defeats the purpose of the facial. Step away from the mirror. I don’t touch my skin 24 hours after a facial. I like to let the magical goodness they put on my face sit. Anyone else?
2.) Using a bunch of makeup:
If we are friends you would never put on makeup after a facial. I kid, I kid. BUT PLEASE don’t put on makeup after a facial. Since the facial is giving you SUCH a deep cleanse, it’s smart to give your skin a break from makeup because your pores are VERY open & susceptible to extra bacteria. After 24 hours feel free to do your thing.
3.) Using an exfoliator:
Over-exfoliating can damage your skin’s protective layer, lead to inflammation, & cause damage. After a facial this is very much unnecessary because it’s something that’s typically already been done during the treatment.
4.) Sunbathing:
I mean I feel like we don’t need to go over this one? Your skin has just been exfoliated which means it’s super sensitive & vulnerable to any sun exposure. WEAR THE SHIT OUT OF YOUR SUNSCREEN AFTER A FACIAL. If the facialist doesn’t apply sunscreen after the facial? I MAY BE MAD ABOUT IT.
5.) Getting a wax
Waxing exfoliates the skin & too much exfoliation will make it more likely that the wax will lift the skin & leave you with an ugly scab or hyper-pigmentation. Trust me, I’ve been there. Avoid waxing after a facial- the results are NOT FUN.

If you’re a babe on a budget AKA you feel a facial isn’t in the cards- I feel you, AND I have a sleep mask for you. One that’s kind of JUST like a facial: WATERMELON GLOW SLEEP MASK. IT’S THIS: skin-smoothing, radiance-boosting sleeping mask with watermelon & hyaluronic acid. WHICH IS VERY MUCH KNOWN TO FIX: uneven skin tone, dullness & uneven texture, & oiliness. The sleep mask is a breathable sleeping mask that keeps you very much hydrated, smooth, & works while you sleep to tone & clarify roughened, dull complexions. The AHA in it smooth the surface of the skin by banishing dead, rough surface cells & keeping the skin baby-soft in the morning.
HOW DO I KNOW? WELL. I interviewed the founders, asked 100 questions, & tried it out 12094812038 times. Soooo. I feel like if you can’t get a weekly facial, try a sleep mask. It’s a gem.
The point is: don’t think a moisturizer is enough.
It’s not.
Like I said: skin care is like being fit. You have to work at it. It’s not something that comes easy.
I’m just being honest here. This shit isn’t sugar-coated. SKIN IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO WORK AT. JUST LIKE FITNESS!
AND as I always say: LEAD WITH YOUR SKIN. For me, I’m bored with the eye shadow/contour thing. It’s fun- but at the end of the day I like to lead with dewy, glowy skin instead of a ton of makeup. Anyone else?
Ok. I am very much obsessed with Siesta Key right now, so I really need to go. I feel this is a weird thing to be obsessed with but you know sometimes it’s fun to chill out & re-live my high school years- popcorn & mint tea is nearby. Tomorrow is non-stop so I must go!
HOPE YOU’RE ALL ENJOYING THE START TO YOUR WEEK!

I have been dying to try this mask- I haae a friend at work that swears by it. One question I have is about applying this mask… do I put all my serums, vitamin c, hyaluronic acids on before I put this on? Or do I skip my other products that night and use this instead? help!
I usually do all products at once. x
I am SO with you on investing in your skin over the other stuff (plus soooo over the Gucci belt that everyone has #yawn). I have been dying to try this mask! I saw it in Sephora and it totally intrigued me. Have you tried Dilo oil? I had the best facial of my life in Fiji & between every single step, they did a dilo treatment in between. It was seriously life changing for me but I feel like it’s VERY TSC 😉 xx Shannon || http://www.champagneatshannons.com
No but I will try it, thanks for the tip Shannon! x
I am so obsessed with this sleep mask!!! instant overnight facial. cannot wait to listen to the podcast with them.
Same! So glad I’m not the only one Ruth. x
I love getting facials! I wish I could get them more often! Do you have any places in LA that you recommend?
http://thegirlswhobrunch.com
I love Glow LA!
Yes to all of the above! There is a such a thing as over-exfoliating, you need to be so careful. I’ve been eyeing that watermelon mask for a while now…come on payday 😛 Also, have you tried Biologique Recherche P50? My skin LOVES it – and apparently it’s the secret of French skincare 😉
No but I will! Thank you for the tip! x
Yasss. Love this post! Although I don’t have the funds to facial every week, I make an effort to do a facial at home on a weekly basis to keep up with all the hard work my esthetician did! Facials make SUCH a difference, and I would much rather invest in my skin rather than material things or even makeup! If your skin looks good, you don’t need as much makeup. 🙂

Agreed, your skin is so important. x
love this post! What kind of facial do you get regularly? There are so many options out there that I always get intimated! Thank you!
I love an oxygen facial. x
Lauryn – What are you favorite places to get facials in San Diego? Also, if you have some budget-friendly options, would love that too!
Hi tsc! I feel like there are so many different types of facials, I don’t even know where to begin or what one to choose. What do you say is the best to go by? These facial places have like every option and they all sound like I need them all.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful and informative write- up. Defo gonna try this.

Can you do a night time routine video on your youtube where you show how you incorporate the watermelon mask in with your other night time products? I always feel so confused and overwhelmed on the order to apply products….do you do this mask last on top of serums, moisturizers, etc. or first and follow up with the others? I loved your morning skincare routine video and found it so helpful to have the step by step laid out!
I love the advice and am also obsessed with the skin situation. BUT I have been subject to a bad facial before (turned into a chemical peel and that is not what I was going for / whole face peeling and red at work for days which was torture). Anyway, my question is – how do you find a great facialist where you live without the risk / waste of time & money? Would love to hear your thoughts – thanks Lauryn!
That is a great question Jackie, I would ask someone you trust in your area, maybe your hair stylist or doctor even, I am sure they will have great tips. Also always look to Yelp!
Wow, such interesting points!! I happen to agree with all of them, and the ones I never thought of before were excellent food for thought…no pun. I most love how she pointed out that moisturizing is Not enough. I just happened to buy that glow mask, and omg it’s to die for fabulous!! I’m really, really enjoying TSC. I just recently found her on YouTube. I wish my facialist of 5 years ago would have told me the sun damage (skin care) will take work, just as in fitness. I really feel I would have stuck to it. Instead, she over-sold products so I didn’t find her believable anyway. Very interesting post!! I am willing to drop the shoes and most def the handbags for more facials??Thanks Lauren!!!
Hi Lauryn,
I just actually started using this product, but it doesn’t tell you have often to use it? Or maybe it does and I missed it. Either way, how often during the week should this mask be used? Thanks so much!
Yes I feel you on this! I’ve never cared much about designer bags or clothes but I like to splurge on my skin when I can. I’ve delt with teenage & adult acne and now I have scars ? I’m getting married in November this year (2018) and want to get some facials. So I can have the best skin possible on my big day!
What facial offices do you recommend that are in LA?
I agree 100%, but you have to find A good esthetician. For the person who asked what kind of facial to get, a good esthetician will take a look at your skin and be able to make a recommendation.. I’m getting one on Saturday.
One more thing for the not to do after list: no retinols for a couple days after.

I see you don’t monetize your website, don’t waste your traffic, you can earn additional cash every month.

Great blog. I have been looking for this blog from very long.
Thanks for the tip that I should avoid applying exfoliators on my skin after getting a facial. Staying at home too much and not having much reason to go about my daily beauty routine has left my skin feeling dry and a bit flaky. Once it’s a bit safer to go outside, I will definitely get a facial in order to make myself looking normal again before this whole pandemic started.
yes! good luck !
