Any other taboo subject ideas, leave them below so I can check them off my list, lol. Anyway I have yet to try this treatment. And obviously, e aren't doctors so definitely do your own research before trying an enema. | Introduce yourself ( AGAIN! Most of you guys already know Weslie ) | Weslie Christensen: Hello! My name is Weslie and I blog over at Love Chugs. I am a mama of three, Amazon junkie, and Licensed Master Esthetician…so, skin and beauty is kind of my thing. I had a bit of a health/skin crisis last year when I came down with candida and a sluggish thyroid---this lead me to stumble upon the holy grail of natural detoxes: the coffee enema. After a ton of initial hesitation, I tried one out and imidiately fell in love with all the health benefits. After, I forced my family and friends to try it out, and they walked away feeling better than ever before, I knew I had to tell Lauryn (and you guys) about them, too! | Ok so, wait. What exactly is an enema?! | An enema is an at home procedure that administers liquid into your body through your rectum. Enemas typically are recommended as a treatment for people suffering from constipation, but there are so many more health benefits to these things than just constipation relief. A coffee enema in particular is like a little detoxing powerhouse. The Gerson institute explains how a coffee enema works best. They state, "The purpose of the coffee enemas is to remove toxins accumulated in the liver and to remove free radicals from the bloodstream. In the 1920s, two German professors tested the effects of infused caffeine on rats. They found that the caffeine travels via the hemorrhoidal vein and the portal system to the liver, opens up the bile ducts and allows the liver to release bile, which contains toxins. The theobromine, theophylline, and the caffeine in coffee dilate blood vessels and bile ducts, relax smooth muscles, and increase the bile flow.” So layman’s terms: coffee in your bum (not stomach) goes straight to your liver via your portal vein. When the coffee is in you liver is opens all those little capillaries and relaxes muscles that are normally tight---which releases bile and bile is filled with your bodies toxins. | What the hell--- why are enemas so taboo? | I think people are embarrassed to talk about poop. Especially their own poop. Simple as that. It is kind of embarrassing though, right? Like, I get it. I don't really want people knowing my bathroom habits either. But guys, EVERYONE POOPS. coffee-beansGT | Describe to us the whole process? We need details | A.} What you’ll need: First off, you will need to purchase an enema kit. You can shop around here or here Next, you need to buy some premium organic coffee beans. I use PurE Coffee that is made especially for coffee enemas. Did I say it has to be organic? If you are constipated, do the enema anyway; this will get things moving nicely! C.} How to prepare the coffee enema 1.) Grab a saucepan and put 2 tablespoons of your ground organic coffee in the saucepan. Add 3 cups of FILTERED water to the pot. 2.) Bring the coffee and filtered water mixture to a boil, then take if off the heat and let it cool. When it's body temperature ( you can test this by placing a clean finger into the coffee, it will be neither hot or cold ) strain through a stainless steal or gold mesh strainer into a clean glass-pouring jar. 3.) Head to the bathroom with your strained coffee and set up a space that is comfortable for you to lie down on. Hint: Be near a toilet and use an old towel, as sometimes there can be slight coffee leakage. Grab a pillow and some reading material, or your phone, as you will be here for approximately 12 to 15 minutes. 4.) Now, assemble your enema kit. It must have a tube and nozzle attached to the bucket or bag. Also, Make sure you have a place to hang it about 3 feet above ground. A towel rack or shower rod works great. 5.) There will be an attachment near the nozzle that allows you to stop or start the flow of coffee once you have poured it into the bag ( or bucket ). Make sure this is in the ‘off’ position before pouring the coffee into the bag. I’ve learned my lesson with this one too many times! 6.) Once the coffee is in the bag or bucket hold the tube and nozzle over the sink and turn it on to allow the coffee to run through the tube until there are no air bubbles. Stop the flow once you know there are no bubbles left. 7.) Grab some organic coconut oil & apply it to the nozzle tip and your bum, too. Don’t be stingy. This will make insertion easy peasy. 8.) Lie down, relax, and then insert the nozzle till it's about 1 inch inside the rectum. Turn on the flow of coffee slowly until the bag or bucket is emptied. Take your time with this as you start out. Let your body get used to it. Then, take the nozzle out. 9.) Now you can either remain lying on your right side, or lie on your back with your feet up above head level or resting up against a wall. You can even get wild with it once you’re a bit more confident and do some yoga moves to get the fluid really moving around inside you. And don’t be surprised if you hear some funny squirting noises from your tummy, this is a good sign and an indication of the bile being stimulated for release. 10.) Try to retain the enema for 12 to 15 minutes. You may feel some strong urges to go to the toilet, especially the first few times you try this, but don’t give up! Try to hold on for as long as you can, quite often the sensations and cramps pass with some deep breathing. As you do these more regularly you will be able to retain the coffee for longer stretches. 15 minutes max is all you need. 11.) When you are ready to release, head to the toilet and let it go..."Let it go, let it go, don’t hold it back anymore!” ( Did I mention I have three kids? I have three kids ). | Interesting! Anyone who is interested in detoxification should definitely look into coffee enemas. I initially started when I found out I had a sluggish thyroid and candida after having my third baby, and I didn’t want to take medication right off the bat. I was aiming to balance out my body naturally when I stumbled upon these, and since doing them I am healthier than ever. I managed to evade medication entirely.

| Pre/post prep tips for an enema? |

It’s always important to be well hydrated, but it’s especially important to keep hydrating while practicing any form of enemas or colon therapy. So make sure to drink water before and after. It’s also a good idea to take a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement when deciding to embark on coffee enemas.

| Any more info we need to know? |

How about a fun fact? It takes your heart only 4 minutes to pump all of the blood throughout your entire body through the liver. During a coffee enema, you aim to hold the coffee for at least 12 minutes so that you can get 3 full rounds of total blood detoxification. Cool, right?

    1. Hi Deepti, lol yep. Enemas are kind of an AWK topic, which I love! Glad I could share something new with you. Would you try it?? LOL!! Thanks for reading <3

    1. Aren’t they so rad? I’m obsessed. Such a chic family. And so healthy! Thanks for reading Anastasia <3

    1. Eeeek! Do it Meg! Tell me what you think / how you feel after you do it. I hope you feel amazing after :)) xx

  1. Thanks for this info, Lauryn! I heard about coffee enemas on Real Housewives of OC this season and I was wondering what in the world it was. Are you going to try it someday? I may consider it since I’m all for detoxing my liver! Have a fab weekend!

    1. Hi Virginia, I am definitely intrigued! I’m still recovering from my surgery so I don’t want to push my body. But it sounds so detoxifying it might be good for me! I guess we’ll see! Let me know if you try it and how it goes!! xx <3

  2. Love both you girls, been reading your blogs for years!!!
I’ve done the coffee enema a few times before and have found that while they do make you feel great, I get bad cramps during the process and it can be messy. If I didn’t get such God awful cramps I’d do it more often.
Have you guys tried the salt flush? Not as many benefits as the coffee enema, but if your goal is to decrease bloat and constipation, this is SO easy and effective!!
Btw Lauryn, your pink drink is a new favorite of mine…. A new morning ritual! Great way to start the day feeling clean and light.

    1. Hi Aileen, thanks for sharing your story! So sorry you had cramps! Ouccchh! But sooo happy you love the pink drink? Isn’t it amazing? I’m obsessed.

I haven’t tried the salt flush but I’ve heard of it! Its cleansing but not as detoxifying as the coffee. If you get cramps with coffee though, def stick to salt.

      Thanks for reading! xx

  3. Hi Lauryn!! I absolutely love your blog–you inspire me and always bring a smile to my face. Thank you for your wonderful gifts!!

I’ve never commented before, but when I saw you posted about the infamous coffee enema I just had to because I do them on the reg and have seen SUCH benefit from them! People are so scared to talk about poop and bathroom business so thank you for going there! Just a little science for ya–when coffee is administered rectally, it is the palmitic acid that is present in the coffee that stimulates the liver to produce oodles of glutathione, and glutathione is that fabulous antioxidant that walks around our bodies like little Walle trash trucks and dumps all the free radicals and garbage into our colon so we can expel via bowel movements!

When I am regularly performing my coffee enemas (or coffee-ing as I like to refer to it :)) my skin absolutely glows, I have a ridiculous amount of energy, and I am far less bloated. We clean our cars, our apartments, and our faces–why wouldn’t we clean the dirtiest place of our bodies?? All the burgeoning research on gut dysbiosis and leaky gut and systemic candida is pointing to hard scientific fact that disease begins and ends in our gut! It’s imperative to a robust immune system and overall health. Just be careful not to perform your enema too late in the day b/c it will absolutely keep you awake at night if you’re sensitive to caffeine. The prep can be a little time consuming when you are first starting out, but once you do a few and get your flow down you can bang through them pretty quickly. And definitely only use organic coffee! My favorite comes from Premier Research Labs–it is certified non-toxic and not too expensive!

I’m so happy you posted about this. There are so many benefits to this practice and so few people uninformed. I think you reach women on a totally different/deep/fabulous level and your readers certainly love what you have to say, and I think they trust you and your beliefs. Way to get the word about coffee enemas out there to everyone!!

Good luck with your recovery–I’m sorry it’s been a rough ride but I know you’re going to come back in full force!! Keep on being a #GIRLBOSS. You’re amazing!!

    1. Hi Emily! Eeeek! I absolutely LOVE your comment. Thank you for sharing! Seriously, I hope everyone reads this for more info! Thank you for reading and for sharing! <3 xx

  4. I’m not going to lie, this is the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard of, but knowing you’re willing to talk about this kind of stuff is why I’m so obsessed with your blog!

    1. Thank you Sarah! I know, it’s totally an awk convo but I love this kind of stuff! Thanks for reading babe :))

    1. Hi Sabrina, the source from Mind Body Green is clearly stated. Again, we aren’t doctors so providing as much research as possible & sourcing information is important when sharing an interview/post like this. There’s no plagiarism— source link is above. Thanks for reading! x

  5. Yes!!! I’m so excited to see the responses! Especially from Emily…Emily, you know your stuff! Coffee enemas are by far the best way to naturally amp up your bodies detoxification process.

    1. Weslie, thank you for being such a sweetheart! Thanks for all of this info, everyone is loving it! And totally agree, Emily’s response is UH-MAZING.

Love having you on the blog babe <3 xx

  6. Loved all the info in this!! I have always been curious about coffee enemas, but never dove into much research myself.

And what a beautiful family!!! Love how stylish the kids are 🙂

    1. Glad you like the post Amelia! I know it’s kind of an awkward topic, but it’s so interesting! Plus the benefits are insane! xx :))

  7. Hey Sabrina! Mind body green is one of my favorites and actually where I first heard about coffee emamas…it’s clearly marked on the benefits section that the info was sourced from mindbodygreen–its at the bottom of that segment, you can click on it and it takes you directly to her article …I give credit where credit is due, and believe in sharing knowledge.

  8. Love this post!! Love Weslie, have been following her and her adorable family for years now ? very interesting post! Would love to try it

    -Kayla

  9. I have done enemas and colon cleanses but never with coffee and I can’t wait to try it! I don’t care what people say about detoxes I’ve regularly detoxes the last six years of my life and feel the benefits almost entirely! Can’t wait to try this just need to get my hands on some organic coffee! Lots of love C

  10. Yes- LOVE that you went there! I haven’t actually tried a coffee enema but I do colon hydrotherapy regularly (which is very similar but you actually go see a specialist who administers it and does abdominal massage to help relieve cramping while you detoxify your system- sounds weird but I’ve actually developed awesome relationships with mine like you would your hairdresser :)).

The benefits are amazing- I always go before/after long trips and after a juice cleanse (to remove additional toxins that were kicked up by the cleanse and may be lingering in your system). You can literally see bile/mucus/food etc. being removed through the machine- it’s weirdly satisfying.

For those readers that may be interested but too afraid to administer something on their own, colon hydrotherapy may be a good first step!

  11. Enemas can be really dangerous if done wrong.
I love your blog, but I get really angry when you post about the guy curing cancer with his diet (btw, I did check his website like you suggested, no info about it whatsoever) and then this! At the very least you should put in SOME warnings, not simply “I’m not a doctor, do your research”
The placebo effect, effects most testimonials.

    1. Hi Joan,

If you re-read the post you will see I recommended to check with a doctor before doing anything, TWICE. I said it at the beginning and end of the post.

As I have stated many times on The Skinny Confidential: I am not a doctor. I’m simply sharing tips and tricks that have worked for people around the world.

As far as ‘the guy curing cancer with his diet’ those words were not mine. They were an interview with Carrie Prejean who had that experience with her father who was struggling with cancer. Carrie was sharing her experience.

Also, to point out: all over my blog clearly states “always check with a doctor, do your own research, and do what works well for you.”

      Thanks for reading! x

  12. Hey girls! A big fan of both of yours. I have been waiting for this post since I saw Weslie’s post on her skincare tips. This was so informative and well written. Cannot wait to try.

I do have one question, would you recommend going to a clinic to do this in the interim to make sure you are administering correctly? Or is this something that really is easier to do on your own? I’m just a little scared of inserting the enema needle..

  13. So very intrigued…Thanks for sharing! Knowledge is power, right. Since having my first babe almost 6 months ago I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing hemorroids for the first time and one particularly nasty fissure that refuses to budge. I went through a stage of being terrified to go, the pain was next level. I thought I’d tried everything…until now. Apparently limited blood flow in that area limits the healing process. A coffee enema may just be the answer. Weslie, have you had a similar experience after any of your pregnancies? I’d be interested to know your thoughts!

  14. Can you please credit me – Amanda Brocket of The Raw Food Kitchen – with a link to my website – for the majority of this article regarding info on coffee enemas? I am the author of the article you have sourced directly from Mind Body Green. It is not good SEO to directly pull content and not amend it. Either be original and make all the content unique or please credit me correctly. Thank you. Amanda.

    1. Mind Body Green was linked, but I will definitely add your specific article and blog too. Added now ; ) x

  15. I love your blog and I love Love Chugs as well. I’ve been following forever and went to Rise Festival. ANYWAY… sorry for the sidetrack, Thank you for posting this! i’ve been researching this subject for a good 6 months now and came so close to trying a couple times but I just couldn’t understand the process until this post. Needless to say, it’s in the mail and I’m excited to give it a try for the benefits and hopefully a much healthier gut! Yay!
    Love and light

  16. New reader here, and loving it! I Don’t usually comment on posts, but like to read them, along with the comments. You respond so well to comments, and you manage to do it so cheerfully. Definately gained a fan here 🙂

  17. I’ve been doing coffee enigmas for 18 years. Both my parents had done them while I was growing up and I thought it was gross. My dad had a liver disease he contracted from the toxin agent orange while he was in Vietnam. My mother researches brought her to the Gearson therapy and that’s what started it. It literally saves my dads life. After college I expressed to my mom that I had frequent headaches and felt bloated all the time. I tried emitted for the headaches but the medication did not ease the headaches. That was when I got desperate and tried the coffe enema. It changed my life! More energy then I’ve ever had. No more bloated feeling. Skin and hair improved. Even though I also improved my diet a little bit. The real change came when I started the enemy’s because my colon is clean and my liver is flushed everyday. I almost feel guilty not sharing my secret with others because it has been so life changing. It’s crazy how society doesn’t find it gross to see a person walking around with a pop belly full of parasites and toxic waste the is constantly reobaorbing into the blood stream. But then an enema seems so gross? I am proof that the dangers are unfounded because they have been a regular routine for me for so many years. When people ask where my skin gets it’s glow, and where I get my energy I smile and say “I don’t know”? I’m very happy that coffee enemas are starting to get the positive attention they deserve. They are the most important element to my health.

  18. I am doing this enema for the last 10 years, am happy about it. Now i wanted to take coffee enema. Can I use the same type of Enema equipments i mean enema can, cathetor, nozle etc with coffee liquid. And what the length of the nozle to be inserted into to the rectum. With water emema up to 30 cms i used to push the cathetor to penetrate inside the colon enabling the effective flushing.
Please let me know with coffee what would the lenth of the cathetor to go inside the colon. Please answer ASAP. Thanks

  19. Thanx Weslie for this info…about 10 months ago I had a tumor removed from my colon, so now I’m trying.to make sure I keep my bowels functioning smoothly..will try this out…thank you again!
