Tips For Working Out When You Kinda Just Wanna Relax

The Skinny Confidential goes on vacation. The Skinny Confidential goes on vacation.

I am far from perfect.

I have a hyper pigmentation when summer rolls around ( what up mustache!! ), my butt gains weight first, sometimes I eat too much & I literally have to secretly unbutton my pants when I sit down, & I tend to WAY over-indulge in chips & guacamole.

So I am not posting this post to brag about how I work out on vacation.

I’m posting because there’s a point so bear with me, mmmkay?

In fact, there’s been so many damn times where I made excuses of WHY I SHOULDN’T WORKOUT ON VACAY ( justification at its finest: I am tired. I should relax. I am on vacation. Ohhh, a donut blow-up toy! OMG, did you see that bird?! Wait, what? A jalapeño margarita sounds so good right now )…so I’m not trying to sit here & act like Ms. Perfect.

The point is: my fitness/wellness/health is a JOURNEY. A lifestyle. It’s forever evolving, you know? It changes…life happens. Making the effort to work out while traveling is a mindset. I know mindsets can change, but I wanted to share where I’m at TODAY. Remember sometimes I work out 7 days a week & sometimes I work out 3. You get it.

Anyway. Here’s why this year I’ve made a commitment to work out while traveling:

1.} First things first, let’s be real…when I’m in a bikini I want to feel my best ( sorry I’m not sorry ).

When I workout on vacation somewhere tropical, I feel a million times better in a bikini. Maybe it’s because I typically consume my weight in steak tacos? Or maybe it’s just in my head…but seriously a pre-bikini workout just feels better, you know? As you know I’ve been using TSC 27 minute Bombshell Body Guide, which has helped me feel bikini ready ( especially when I use the guide BEFORE getting into a bathing suit )…oh, & shoutout to the casual toilet in the back:

2.} It’s fun to sweat in a beautiful place.

This is the gym at our hotel in Cabo. It’s kind of too pretty to avoid, right? I tell myself that I will just do 27 minutes & enjoy the ambience. The pretty flowers, amazing music, & rad equipment made it wayyyy easier to get off my ass. If you’re not in a spot with a pretty gym ( heyyyy I’ve been there ), utilize the outdoors.

AND IF YOU’RE GOING TO MAKE THE EXCUSE “it’s snowing/raining/etc,” don’t. Because with Bombshell Body Guide you can literally work out in your hotel room. In fact, in Washington, D.C. I worked out every day in my hotel room with no equipment & Michael reading on the bed. The space was small but I made it work!! Sweating it out made the work trip 10 times better. Whatever workout you do, just move— you’ll feel better. So. Exhibit B, Cabo gym:

3.} My ideal workout is now created!! WOOT WOOT!

Very excited that I was able to create my version of the perfect workout guide with celebrity trainer, Jaime. Not being sell-y, just being real: I AM OBSESSED with TSC Guide because it’s exactly what I like: quick workouts that are effective & make you sore in all the right places. Plus it’s in a little book that I carry around ( see above, 2nd pic ) AND I can access it on my phone. These are 27 minute workouts that are made for women. I bring my book everywhere. Now there’s NO EXCUSE for me not to workout on vacation/work trips.

4.} It makes you feel WAYYYY BETTER.

I swear that working out before you’re scheduled to relax sets the tone of the whole day. There was this one day in Cabo that I missed my sweat session & felt…MEH. So not the same feeling as when I worked out the day before. The more endorphins, the better- thanks. Taking 27 freaking minutes out of my day to literally relax the entire day is KIND OF SO WORTH IT. ( By the way, generally I use TSC Guide 3 to 4 times a week & the other days I hike, walk the treadmill, or take a Pilates class ).

5.} Who the hell doesn’t like results??

This one is major (!!!). Since starting the guide months ago I have toned the F UP. No joke, I feel so much tighter. I don’t know if you guys can notice, but my skinny jeans certainly do. I’ve lost weight, tightened up, & just feel better and more confident. There’s no reason for me to go to Mexico & potentially hurt the results I’ve worked so hard for. It’s just not worth it. I want to keep up my routine.

SO! For those of you who asked on Snapchat & email: those are my travel workout tips.

Oh, & what do I do when I wake up & feel like lying around? Push myself. You are your own cheerleader, no one’s going to do it for you. The discipline I’ve learned through working out has transcended into all areas of my life. Like Nike says: JUST DO IT ( SO CLICHÉ BUT TRUE!! ).

Excuses are like assholes, everyone has one, right?…I also think about chips & salsa and that motivates me to sweat it out. Anything…& I mean anything…for chips & salsa.

Anyone else have any traveling workout tips? I know some of you guys travel for a living!! Share!

Ok I’m off to read my latest biography ( on Candice Bergen!! ). Adidos!

  1. Ah reading this hits the spot.

I haven’t been making the effort I had been a few months ago and really, I just can’t find time. But like you said, we all have an excuse.

I’m also in a weird spot. I have kept off the weight I lost since January despite ups and downs of going hard and going lax. A lot of my clothes don’t fit, while exciting to see how much smaller my waist has become (or are all my clothes just old and stretched? I’m honestly paranoid the universe is toying with me), I am depressed that nothing fits and I don’t have the budget to buy new clothes. Plus what if I start working hard again and make more changes? More clothes?

I’ve honestly thought about eating extra to gain the weight back just so my clothes fit. I don’t want to do that, I want to look like you when we go to Hawaii next year for my wedding. Ah!

Long story short, I’m not going to give up, I’ll save a budget so when I’m even smaller I can buy some new pants.

  2. I never used to work out on vacation but last time I went me and my boyfriend did a couple of quick sessions in the hotel gym! It made a huge difference to my energy levels 🙂

  3. I used the bombshell body guide when I was on vacation too…and I’ll be doing it in my hotel rooms while I’m on a cross-country road trip in two weeks!

  4. Hey Lauryn. This is litterally the first time I make a comment on a blog/post/youtube channel/ etc. But I’m really intrigued about the TSC Bombshell guide. I’m from Spain and I was wondering if you were going to make it available in my country any time soon. Also congrats on your blog, Love it!

  5. Thanks for motivating me to get my sweat on today!! Fitness is most definitely a journey. I am an avid aka obsessed, runner. Double foot surgeries over 2 months ago have left me down for count! I finally got cleared to start running again on Saturday, but I find myself making a ton of excuses. I’ve been SO anxious to get out there, but I’m so unmotivated because I know I’m going to feel out of shape, and I currently am less than thrilled to put on tight workout pants. Needless to say I’m a bit off from bikini shape thanks to two months with my feet up (literally) But you’re SO right. Part of the journey. You’ve motivated me to get out there. I’m anxious to feel like me again and it will definitely help to sweat it out! Xx

  6. Sometimes it helps to think of a workout in terms of how happy/lighthearted it’ll make you instead of physical results. So you’ve definitely made a good point about feeling better on workout days!

  7. Hey Lauren, another great post. Agree with everything you’ve said and always work out on holiday as if I’m at home. Starting your day with a workout just makes you feel on top of the world, and when I’m in a bikini, that is definitely how I want to feel! Glad other people also exercise in tiny hotel rooms, haha. Lots of love, Andrea xxx

  8. I’m not even on vacation but I needed this reminder to just keep going! Thanks! I’m excited to start the plan!

  9. I swear, working out makes you feel so much better and does the body AND soul good. There has never been a time where I finished a workout and thought, “I feel like sh*t!”. NEVER!

  10. Love this post! I absolutely love working out on vacation, too! There’s nothing more satisfying!

  11. LOVE this post!!! All so true, especially the statement that you feel so much better all day after getting a workout in. The relaxation just feels better after that!

My tip for working out on vacation is to WALK as many places as you can. My favorite way to see a new place is by morning jogs or walking around exploring all day. I have such fond memories of morning jogs in Hawaii and walking for hours and hours and hours all over the hilly seaside towns of Italy. You forget you’re even working out! 🙂

  12. I definitely need to workout on vacation…it’s a real letdown when your lifestyle is going great and then you go on vacation and WHAMO hello extra maragarita weight! I always say “Be the Nike symbol” aka just do it so that hits the spot perfectly. And by the way, you always look fabulous!!!

  13. Hi Lauryn! First time commenter but a religious follower of your blog!

I know it’s a little off topic, but could you recommend the best area of
San Diego to stay in for a girls trip? None of us have ever been but we’re hoping for lots of beach time, bar hopping and great eats. Googling has confused me even further as to what area we should focus our VRBO search around. Thank you!

  14. Love the part about being your own cheerleader!! So true and empowering, thank you for the reminder and dedication. I love your tips!

  15. So grateful for you sharing these. I’ve been in a funk (and not on vacation) lately. Skipping workouts because ………. well let’s not talk about the excuses I’ve come up with. Summer is here, and endorphins are needed. Love the idea of 27 minutes. My Pure Barre class is 1 hour which I can usually justify, but that requires actually leaving the house… 27 minutes at home, that I should be able to do. And think of the extra glasses bubbles I could justify 🙂

Love the tips and that suit. Hope Cabo was wonderful to you.

  16. I totally agree! I love going for a run when I get somewhere new to explore (and sometimes get a little lost… oopsie).
But I’m also a strong believer in not forcing myself to workout if I’m really not up to it.

Also, I’m obsessed with your cabo wardrobe! xx

  17. I always make an effort to try and work out while on vacation, but mostly it’s because I get in vacay mode and over eat! Signing up for classes is one of the only things that keeps me on top of it.

You look great girl. Where is that sports bra from? (The one with the white pattern on the back?) Love!

  18. Hi! I think the 27 min workouts sound great. Are there videos for the workouts ? To keep it at 27 mins?

  19. Please help!!!!!! What do you do when your summer “mustache” comes back!! I have the same thing and I constantly put zinc and wear a hat and stay out of sun but what do you do when you are getting ready to cover it or lighten it? I can’t hardly look at the mirror and want to cry when I see pictures 🙁 any tips?

  20. Absolutely LOVE this post Lauryn! I always have to find the time to fit in workouts during vacation time so it’s good to know I’m not alone! Keep up the amazing work I love reading your blog xx

  21. I love this article! Very inspiring! it’s so hard to work out on vacation, but diet is so important as well so I try to keep my muscles recovering with amino acids and I feel so much better, it gives me so much energy and makes my time way better.
