The Business Of Blogging, Snapchat, How To Brand Yourself

the business of blogging

Hi, hi, quick Sunday hello because we’re super excited about this video we did with Video Influencers on YouTube.

We talked all about our new podcast ( have you listened to Episode 6?! ), Snapchat, branding, blogging, really just the works.

It’s been super fun to start really diving into the whole business of blogging. I feel like a lot of bloggers don’t talk about it?

Right though? It feels like an unknown to a lot of people.

Regardless, Michael & I are getting the conversation going because blogging is MOST definitely a business if executed properly.

It’s also my career. A career that a lot of people don’t really understand so it’s fun to do videos/posts on the whole business of blogging:

00:52 – How did The Skinny Confidential start?
01:41 – When did Michael come into the picture and what is it like working together?
02:27 – Advice for couples working together

11:28 – One POWERFUL thing you can do today to improve your brand
13:34 – How to make money with YouTube and blogging and turn your creativity into a career

21:59 – Why Lauryn and Michael are going ALL-IN on Snapchat
22:47 – Is Snapchat right for you? (A few things to consider first)
23:42 – How to grow your Snapchat using growth hacking

Huge thanks to the Video Influencers team ( Sean was an awesome host! ). Be sure to check them out. Their YouTube channel has some BADASS tips especially if you’re in the influencer’s space.

Do you guys like when we talk shop? If so, we’d love to answer your questions on our next podcast. Leave your Instagram or Snapchat handle below with a question & we’ll totally shout you out. Questions can range from one night stands to blogging to relationship realness to business. Get feisty.

Also, if this kind of post is your jam: the new site has an added ‘business’ category.

Ok, I’m getting into bed with a new book, watermelon jerky, & some peppermint tea.

Hope you all had a very relaxing Sunday ( unless of course you went to Coachella! ). See you tomorrow.

  1. I love y’alls podcast! I have a question for you about blogging (instagram handle is @alexis.roch and snapchat is @alexisroch ) what was your biggest source of traffic when you had been blogging for just a few years? How did you get your name out there more to continue to gain readers? 🙂

    1. Thanks for sending this question over Alexis! Stay tuned for the podcast! Also a little tip regarding your question, social media isa great tool. Just keep chipping away every day and keep putting out good content. xx

    1. Hi Suze, of course! I completely agree. It’s such a new industry and originally was considered more of a platform for creatives, not businesses. Fast forward to now when blogging is a full blown industry! It’s crazy! xx

    1. Hi Krista, I feel like you and I are always on the same wave length. Every time you comment I am totally thinking the same thing! Too funny. xx

  2. Lauryn {& Michael!} – I am loving the direction you are going. I totally agree that blogging is a career with so many “Behind The Scenes” business aspects that are so unfamiliar to many unless you are doing it. After the years, you KNOW them & Michael’s business advice is gold. I’ll def try to think of more questions for you two! I really get so much out of your podcasts and this video was no exception. So much solid advice & you could seriously teach a course (if you do, can you lmk so I can sign up?!). Thanks so much for sharing with us all! x Shannon

    1. Hi Shannon, that really means a lot that you like where we’re going! It’s great to have Michael sharing his tips on TSC! What else do you want to see? Send over any requests for me or Michael! Let us know! <3

  3. I love this topic as well!! I’m wondering how long it took for you to get repeat readers when you started blogging? Also, do you think there is a time to throw in the towel as a new blogger if you’re not reaching a certain number of page visits per month? Thanks!! @sandrayogawpg

    1. Hi Sandra, here’s the thing. I don’t think there is a time to throw in the towel, if you’re willing to look at your content and seriously ask yourself: “DO MY POSTS ADD VALUE TO THE READER?” I don’t think you’ll have any trouble gaining readers if your posts add valuable insight, info, perspectives, inspiration, or emotions to the readers. The whole point is that if there is a reason for them to come back, they will. I don’t think you should focus so much on page views. Focus more on whether your readers are coming back. Return visitors are important first and foremost because it’s a reflection that you’re adding value.

    1. Thanks Tara! I think we’re going to cover this in an upcoming episode! Not sure when but hopefully soon! xx

  4. Great job breaking into the Podcast world Lauryn & Michael!

I’ve had Snapchat for a couple years now with just friends I know in real life on it but I recently changed my settings to be open to the public. I’d like to gear my Snapchat toward a more fitness/wellness focused approach but am afraid my friends will be annoyed with this. How do you deal with the diversity of personal snapchat friends and public followers? (SnapChat @caitycane, IG @caitycane)

    1. Thank you Caitlin! Great question! Stay tuned for the podcast, I think it would be a great question to include on the show! Also, just in general, I think you should provide content that both relate to your personal life and wellness. It’s all a part of your personal brand :)) Thanks for reading! xx

  5. First off, SO HAPPY YOU’RE DOING THIS. I’d love to hear how you manage your creative time between video, writing, social, etc. in the infancy of your brand and suggestions on how to do so while working full time, especially when working on your business isn’t an option at work. Video is so time-consuming and finding a balance is a challenge. Guidelines on when to start charging for work you put out and what you should be asking for. This seems to be secretive and if more people shared it would really level the playing field in payrates for all bloggers/creatives. Finally, at what point did you find you truly found your niche?

  6. A lot of people don’t understand that blogging isn’t really for everyone and that it can really be a full-fledged career when given enough time and effort. 🙂 Great share!
