If you get too comfortable in a relationship, the passion will dwindle.
If you get too comfortable on the couch, you’ll turn in to a fat, lazy turd.
If you get too comfortable in a shitty job, you’ll be F-ing miserable.
And whelp, if you get too comfy in general, you’re not living up to your full potential.
So. Step out of your comfort zone more often.
I’m not talking about hanging out with people who you don’t want to be around or going on a date with someone who’s not so not your type.
Those are ‘thanks but no thanks situations’ ( more on the power of no here ).
Anyway, all I’m saying is this:
Adding a little romance to a relationship never hurt anyone- do something different every so often. Maybe plan a couple’s massage or practice hot yoga by candlelight together.
If you run everyday of the week because you hate lifting weights, then start mixing Pilates to your workout routine. That way it shocks body so it doesn’t plateau. I recently did this with incorporating running into my workout & it’s been a game changer.
Exploring other job options by spending a weekend focusing on changing a negative work environment is much better than sitting on your ass complaining about it.
Routine is boring.
Routine is regressive.
As Henri de Lubac said: “habit and routine have an unbelievable power to waste and destroy.”
So. Don’t get too comfy on the couch. Start venturing outside of your comfort zone— & see what happens ; ).
No really. I went to take her Studio Barre class & she had me laughing while I was in a happy baby ( AKA ‘spread eagle’ ) pose. She was just checking to make sure ‘our bungholes were facing the mirror.’ HA!
I was hooked to her sense of humor + her amazing class. Every Friday at noon you can find me tucking away with Brooke. She’s a real gem. Read on, lovaz. You’ll fall in love with her too!
+ Tell us about yourself.
Brooke Tigh: I’m graceful, strong, and coordinated-yet still somehow very accident prone.
I’m energetic, confident and silly-but when it’s time to wind down, I’ve been known to turn into a “womouch” ( part woman, part couch ). Even though I love to joke around, I CAN be serious and focused. It’s all about balance.
Teaching fitness and living a healthy, active lifestyle is my passion! A perfect day consists of: Studio Barre, yoga, lunch with friends ( & adult beverages ), massage, nap, dog park w/ my pup, more adult beverages, delicious dinner, dance party ( duh ), a nice sleep in my glorious cal king ‘cloud bed!’
+ Why is Studio Barre amazing?
BT: Studio Barre is so fantabulous ( yes that’s a word- cause I said so! ) because not only is it a kick ass workout that will literally change the shape of your body for the better…but it’s a place to come and be surrounded by glorious people & great energy. There’s something magical that happens when you walk into the doors of Studio Barre; you smile, you laugh, you bond with all the other ( mostly women ) ‘tucker’s.’ Everybody is so supportive of one another, there’s no cattiness or bitchy-ness like other boutique style studios sometimes have.
+ Favie Studio Barre move?
BT: Why, the ‘tuck’ of course! What is a ‘tuck’, you ask? It’s simple. Just squeeze your bootie & pull your belly button in to your spine. It’s like a little air hump. It tightens everything from your ass all the way up & goes through your entire core. It lengthens your low back, while strengthening your belly muscles. As we say, “keep calm and tuck on!”
I’m also a big fan of our ‘cardio snack’, which happens about halfway into class, gets your heart pumping, & helps you find your last push of energy to take it to the end of class.
+ Quick skinny tips?
BT: To slim down, cut out booze, refined sugar, & carbs. I know, it sounds freaking terrible. But you will see a change in like a week, I swear! Try & do this for two full weeks to see the most difference. Or if you can’t tone it, tan it! Get a spray tan & you may possibly look five pounds lighter!
Put on those stilettos, girl. The higher the better for long, lean, luxurious legs!!! Also, invest in Spanx. You will be amazed!
+ Weekly workout schedule?
BT: Right now, I’m on the books to teach three yoga classes & nine Studio Barre classes a week…& I usually sub a few classes on top of that.
Since my voice is pretty much the only thing that gets a workout while teaching, I like to kick my own ass in these ways:
– At least three Studio Barre classes…
– At least three yoga classes…
BT: I’m the worst at cardio! It has to be disguised for me in classes like Zumba, Cardio Dance, & Step. I usually go to Frog’s Gym in Encinitas. Also, I have a Labradoodle named Piper who has tons of energy, so lots of walks with her count as part of my routine!
+ Favorite go-to healthy food?
BT: I try to always have a Larabar with me…cashew cookie and peanut butter cookie are my faves. An organic banana with some crunchy, unsalted almond butter & organic, raw trail mix= life saver!
+ Cocktail of choice?
BT: Kettle One vodka & water ( not soda water ) with three lemon slices. Delicious & refreshing!
+ Motivation to stay in shape?
BT: I’ve always been active through dance, sports, & working out. I’m motivated by the simple fact that I know for sure that I’m going to feel better afterwards. If that’s not enough, living in San Diego & embracing the beach lifestyle requires a shorts, tank top, & a bikini ready body during all seasons!
– If you’re rested, you’re not cranky- & that’s beautiful!
– If you have a lot of sex-you have that glow ( it’s scientifically proven, people! )…& that’s beautiful!
– If you drink enough wine, not only are you getting those powerful antioxidants, you’re not stressed out…& that’s beautiful!
+ Quick, easy recipe?
“Beanwah” ( beans+quinoa )
1 cup tri color quinoa
2 cups low sodium vegetable stock
1 teaspoon coconut oil
1 teaspoon red or yellow curry sauce ( or any yummy flavorful sauce you have )
1 big handful of raw kale ( they sell it in bags all cut and trimmed, way easier than buying the whole stalk & doing it yourself )
Organic black beans ( canned & whole is fine-I get mine at Trader Joe’s )
+ Directions: Put all ingredients except for beans in a rice cooker. Be sure to rinse your quinoa, it has a bitter outer shell that’s no bueno. Once cooked, fluff rice cooker stuff w/ a fork. Heat beans ( nuke ’em in the micro! ). Mix together, salt and pepper to taste, and WALA! BEANWAH!
* Sauteed tempeh or tofu is a good add-on, or some freshly steamed veggies too!
How cool is this?! Lorna Jane is on the blog today. If you’re into health/fitness & don’t know Lorna, then come out from that rock you’ve been hiding under. This women has got.it.going.on.
My absolute dream in life is to create my own fashionable/chic workout line, so it’s an understatement when I say Lorna Jane is a total inspiration. I also die over her book she sent me; the pretty, pink book is full of fitness tips + healthy recipes & it’s called Move, Nourish, Believe:
Alright. Get excited. Here’s everything Lorna Jane:
+ Hi Lorna! Introduce yourself.
Lorna Jane Clarkson: I am the founder and Chief Creative Officer of Lorna Jane, Australia’s leading activewear label for women. I am an active woman, a lover of all things health and fitness, & an eternal optimist.
+ Inspiration to start a workout line?
LJC: It all started over twenty years ago when, as a fitness instructor I was tired of the boring workout wear on offer, so decided to fashion my own. Teaching aerobics gave me the perfect platform, & before I knew it friends and women in my classes were asking me to make theirs too.
+ Favorite piece you’ve designed & why?
LJC: Now that’s a hard one…because Lorna Jane is an activewear brand that focuses on bringing fashion & function together, our styles are constantly changing and subsequently so are my favorites. In saying that, there are a couple of essential pieces that I always have in my active wardrobe; the Pammy Bra because it has incredible support, gives your bust great shape and is fashionable enough to wear on its own but also looks fantastic under a singlet or your favorite t-shirt. The Amy Full-Length Tight is another must-have piece because it doubles as a workout pant as well as tights that you want to wear on the weekend. The fabric is amazing & the panel lines are so flattering, you won’t want to take them off! I have at least four pairs so that I always have at least one pair washed & ready to go!
+ Best workout?
LJC: Well, that all depends how you look at it. My favorite thing to do would have to be yoga… It gives me that ‘alone time’. Not only do I get to stretch my body, but I get to clear my mind and get in some meditation at the same time. My favorite workout for results would have to be a great legs workout that includes squats and lunges … not much fun whilst you are doing them, but as someone famous once said, “no pain, no gain!”
+ Quick, skinny tip:
LJC: Preparation is everything! I always have some healthy snacks on-hand to avoid reaching for unhealthy alternatives during the day. I carry protein powder with me so all I have to do is add cold water and shake. Small containers of portioned almonds are always good & I like to have chewable Vitamin C tablets in my bag to ward off any sugar cravings.
+ Easy, healthy recipe:
LJC: My fave at the moment is ‘Protein Pancakes‘. All you need is a banana and two eggs. Blend them for thirty seconds, with a teaspoon of cinnamon, & pour into a heated pan [ I use coconut oil for healthy fats ]. They are great on their own or wrapped around some fresh strawberries for a protein-rich snack. YUM!
+ What makes Lorna Jane different than other workout brands?
LJC: There are so many things…first off, our brand means so much more to our customers than what you see on the shelves. Everything we do, everything we say & everything we produce is inspired by our Move, Nourish, Believe philosophy. When you wear Lorna Jane you are telling the world that you promise to move your body everyday, nourish from the inside out & believe anything is possible with hard work. This is the active life that we promote & it’s why women all over the world have fallen in love with Lorna Jane.
Another thing that sets us apart from other brands is that we are designed for active women by active women, & our complete focus is on women’s fitness apparel…which I guess makes us the experts. We also have a huge fashion-focus & produce between seventy to a hundred new styles per month, guaranteeing our customers some fashionable motivation to move everyday.
+ Most exciting thing about starting your own workout line?
LJC: The most exciting thing about having my own activewear brand started from day one and still continues to be; seeing women wearing it. Even after twenty years in the business, I get an enormous thrill when I see people in Lorna Jane. My customers tell me everyday how inspiring the brand is and how it motivates them to be more active. It makes me feel that what I do actually does make a difference in peoples lives…& let me tell you, that feels pretty good.
+ A tip for washing workout wear?
LJC: I think one of the common mistakes we make when it comes to washing the things we love is that we take too much care! With activewear, the best thing you can do is simply machine wash it and let it go through the spin cycle [ you will notice that it will be almost dry ] & then hang it to dry [ usually takes a couple of hours max ].
Don’t be tempted to throw activewear in the dryer as eventually you will destroy the elastane in the fabric which looks pretty bad, but will also make it thinner & less supportive.
+ One word to describe Lorna Jane:
LJC: Just one?! I think I will have to go with ‘authentic’ because we are a real brand that has a real passion for what we do & what we represent, and I guess that makes us AUTHENTIC!
Ahhh! So excited to introduce you to one of Europe’s top fitness bloggers, Danica [ her boyfriend, Rasmus, also blogs with her ]. She runs the site, Fit For Livin– her blog really motivates you to get off your ass & move your bod [ note: to read FFL you may or may not have to translate it ]. Above & below are some pictures from her inspirational site. Read on to find out what a Skinny Bitch cocktail is…TGIF!
+ Tell us about yourself and your blog.
Fit For Livin: My name is Danica & I have a Danish workout and motivation blog, Fit For Livin, together with my boyfriend, who is a workout/healthy food addict just like me. We have been together for five years and he was actually the one who introduced me to the wonderful world of lifting weights & eating healthy on a budget. Since then my view on life & myself has changed drastically. Today I’m feeling much more confident about my body in general. Life really changed for us back in March when I found out we were expecting our first child [ a little boy ] in November. I still eat healthy though and work out three to four times a week, & by doing that I can control my weight so I am in shape throughout the pregnancy.
+ Quick skinny tips or tricks?
FFL: I actually don’t believe in losing weight quickly, however, the few times I have done it is when I have eaten a diet high in protein. I only eat things like eggs, meat, fish, vegetables, & protein shakes for a week and I can lose around three to four pounds. They stay off when I do this compared to other diets where you eat soup for a week & then afterwards gain it all again. Of course I work out too- mostly cardio when the pounds have to go.
+ What is your weekly workout schedule?
FFL: I do all kinds of workouts such as weight lifting, running, step fit, cross fit, thai bo boxing classes, spinning, yoga, etc. The more exercises I incorporate, the more fit and strong I become. My suggestion is that you vary your workout routine & keep pushing yourself in new disciplines. Since I’m pregnant I workout three to four times a week depending on how I feel. I do not push myself in the same way anymore & don’t do any ab exercises. But I can still run, step, spin, & lift weights and will keep exercises as long as I can.
+ Favorite go-to healthy food?
FFL: We primarily cook our own food since food to go is very expensive in Denmark compared to the States. However, when we do so, we always go for healthy sandwiches or sushi. It is actually very easy to get healthy fast food in Denmark, & Europe, in general. Sometimes we make our own healthy protein snacks and bring them to go.
+ Cocktail of choice?
FFL: No doubt about it: a Skinny Bitch. It’s very simple & made of good quality vodka, sparkling water, & lime. It is so fresh and you can keep on drinking them the whole night. More importantly it only contains a few calories, so you will not get a headache the following day since it contains no sugar. I can highly recommend it; in Denmark it’s so popular among people who wants to live healthy but drink want to occasionally drink alcohol.
+ Motivation to stay in shape?
FFL: In the past my motivation was to obtain a beautiful body that I could be proud of. It still is, however, I also do it for my health. By working out & eating healthy, it ends up really benefiting you when you’re older. You will feel happier in general & have more energy. I don’t see any reasons why not to stay in shape.
+ Any European tricks we don’t know in the States?
FFL: In the States you are always ahead of the rest of the world, or it seems that way, so we definitely learn a lot from you guys. Nevertheless, it’s my understanding that you don’t bicycle as much as we do. In Europe, and in particular in Scandinavia, almost every citizen owns a bike & uses it for work, school, workouts, etc. By doing so we get a lot of exercise without thinking about it as we use it as a means of transportation and at the same time we save money on public transportation. It’s a win-win situation. Moreover we eat a whole lot of rye bread. It has tons of fibers and keeps you full for a very long time.
+ Best beauty product?
FFL: Birch Cellulite Oil from Weleda. It actually helps and makes a big difference when you use it every single day. Even better it is made of natural ingredients!
+ Natural beauty remedy that you do?
FFL: I actually have several natural beauty remedies I do every day. I start my mornings by drinking a big cup of green tea. This is very great for your inner organs and your metabolism. Then I stretch out from head to toe so I’m ready for a new day. Later on before I head to bed, I rub my body [ especially the belly ] in different oils to avoid stretch marks & cellulite. I love these small rituals!
So…you are working your ass off on the reg. Let’s say you’re running on the treadmill four days week. Or every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, is the typical [ & predictable ] weights. Or maybe you’re spinning every Tuesday & Thursday…but you’re still not seeing the results. This is a workout plateau. Switch up your routine!!! Mix it up ASAP.
+ Workout harder. Pump it up. If you’re not sweating, you’re not working hard enough. Enough said.
+ Don’t be fooled. Even though those the scale isn’t decreasing from those intense workouts, your pants fit better. This is because the body loses weight & eventually slims out with muscle/tone. Buh-bye blubber!
+ Be patient. It takes dedication & hard work to tone up. Give it a few weeks before you see the results you’re striving for.
+ Trick your bod. Make changes to your workouts every couple of weeks. You don’t want to get too used to doing the same fitness routine or it’s not as challenging. I’m sure you all know what I mean…stop whining & up the intensity.
+ Eat right. Stop cheating. Put down the candy bar, chips, etc. & move your body!
