Oh me, oh my. If you’re like me you have a little something called TECH NECK.

Never heard of it? Well, it’s real. And the struggle is REAL, real.

So many women forget that the first place we age is the neck. And guess what? The cell phone sitch is REALLY not helping. I mean it’s making it so much worse than it has to be, you know? Now instead of being hunched over the computer like The Hunchback of Notre Dame, we’re crouched over our cell phones. All of us.

Like SELF Magazine says, “carpal tunnel is SO five years ago.”

So ya, now TECH NECK is everywhere.

What exactly is it?

According to Florida chiropractor Dean L. Fishman, D.C.: “it’s an overuse syndrome or a repetitive stress injury, where you have your head hung forward and down looking at your mobile device for extended periods of time,” he explains. “Don’t get me wrong: I love technology, but this is a global epidemic not just from texting, but from using all sorts of wireless media.”

Well, UGH. Another day, another discovery.

Sometimes TECH NECK will give headaches, shoulder/neck pain, & increased curvature in the spine.

But good news: I feel like I’m ahead of the curve here. Only because I am CONSTANTLY on my phone for work though. I noticed little lines on my neck a while ago & recognized the importance of fixing this QUICKLY.

Here are 3 easy tips anyone & everyone can do. Ready? K:

1.) Exercises. That’s right. I’ve actually been talking about neck exercises since 2012…remember this post on “how to get rid of your turkey hanger?” We talked about how important it is to stretch your neck.

The best one in my opinion is BABY COBRA. Try it now, you can do it anywhere:

1. Begin by lying face down on the floor with your legs extended behind you. Keep your legs down and position your hands directly under your shoulders.

2. Keep your chin tucked, looking down on the floor, then slowly take your hands off the ground and squeeze your shoulder blades together.

3. Lower your upper body while staying in that position, then raise up and contract your glutes. Do this motion 10 times.

I’ve been so into yoga lately & I feel like it’s REALLY helping with my tech neck. Yoga has opened me up ( literally & figuratively ). Seriously I cannot say enough good things about the practice. I like non-heated yoga because I find a heated room VERY distracting. Yoga flow is more my style. Recently I’ve noticed my posture improving from taking my bi-weekly yoga class.

If you can, I love a good chiropractor too. He’s constantly stretching my back & it relieves a lot of neck pain. My chiropractor loves giving me at-home exercises to open up and prevent that hunched over look.

2.) Tip two is one I discovered recently. As you guys know I try a lot, a lot of products. Constantly the human guinea pig because I’m on the hunt to discover the best of best. This new skincare brand, NIA, sent me some of their products to try. First off, I immediately liked their branding…why? Well NIA stands for NOT INTO AGING. Yes plz.

Secondly the product is created for millennials, by millennials for millennial skin. ANOTHER YES PLZ.

The goal of the brand is focus on situational issues…AKA tech neck.

They get it. Our lifestyle involves the phone. So instead of telling us to get off the phone, they have a little solution: TECH NECK LINE SMOOTHER.

This is a perfect serum ( I love a serum ) packaged in an on-the-go massage roller ( I also love a roller ). Basically you just roll it on your neck to firm & smooth the skin. It helps get rid of those pesky tech neck lines we’re all trying to avoid.

For the record I also tried their serum for the face & really liked it too. It was great for hydration & to smooth lines. Another fave ( if you’re on the market for a new mask ) was their whipped clay peel-off mask. Very into it because it’s a FOAM mask. It comes out of the bottle as this mousse ( like hair mousse consistency ) & you rub it on your face to draw dirt out of the skin. Here’s what I did the other day: I put the mask all over my face AND NECK & then after I washed it off, I used the tech neck serum. Using a mask on your neck is normal right? If not, I’m on a mission to make it cool.

Don’t forget about your neck!

You can find all these products at Ulta Beauty…be careful though there are SO many good finds at Ulta you may…hate me?

3.) Lastly, you know what I’m going to say here: sunscreen & a hat! Here’s the thing: prevention is KEY. If you have the option to keep your neck out of the sun- DO IT. I feel like the sun only makes my tech neck horizontal lines worse so I make it my MISSION daily to avoid the sun by using caffeinated sunscreen & rocking a hat…every single day. Kind of absurd, but so important.
Doing this makes all the difference & it’s so anti-aging in general.

Is anyone else with me here?

PROTECT THE SKIN!

With that, I’m off to rub some neck serum on my neck & chest and watch the latest episode of Real Housewives Beverly Hills ( living for Dorit’s outfits this season ).

Are you guys into taking care of your neck? The sooner, the BETTER. You know how I love prevention…; )

Happy Tuesday!

Nasty Gal x The Skinny Confidential.

Nasty Gal x The Skinny Confidential.

Obviously the creator of the Nasty Gal empire, Sophia Amoruso, is a HUGE inspiration to woman entrepreneurs everywhere.

Not only has she created a badass brand, but also a full blown MOVEMENT with her online shopping platform, book, clothing line, & now LA storefront ( I wrote more about how she’s inspired me here ).

So when Nasty Gal invited me to come tour their headquarters?? I was soooo, like so, so excited. When I arrived at NG I met with Devan & Krista, who took me on the most insane tour.

And, uh basically the office rocks.

NBD, it has an in-house design team, rad decor, a yoga room, & so many amazing clothes/shoes. Any office with a fitness studio is insane in my book. Plus they allow dogs at work.

Uhhhhh-mazing.

After Devan & Krista shared their workspace, I knew I HAD TO SHARE IT WITH YOU GUYS, so here ya go— meet Devan Pucci who does Nasty Gal’s public relations:

|| Ok, so after having a tour of NG HQ, I’m smitten. Tell us all about working at one of the fastest growing companies in the US. ||

Devan Pucci, Nasty Gal PR: It’s a blast because so many inspiring projects are always in the works. We recently moved into our beautiful new offices that span about 50,000 square feet & we’re now located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles. From Nasty Gal’s physical growth to our online product expansion, it’s clear that there’s a lot to look forward to over the next few years & beyond!

|| Benefits of working at NG? ||

DP: Working at Nasty Gal is awesome. The dress code, as you may imagine, is very Nasty Gal and allows employees to express their own unique style. It makes getting ready for work fun! Dogs are allowed; you’ll see them all over the offices and hiding under couches. We have fun get togethers for the staff, which include Beer & Wine Friday’s, trivia games ( with prizes, of course ), in-office manicures, & chair massages. Recently we’ve been watching the World Cup together over some beers.

|| Can you expand on how your CEO & Founder, Sophia Amoruso has evolved over the past couple years? ||

DP: She’s gone from dumpster diving to CEO of the coolest company in the world andddd wrote a book called #GIRLBOSS which landed her on the New York Times bestseller list! Hard work pays off:

|| Describe a day in the life at NG? ||

DP: Working in PR means I am constantly communicating &executing. I spend my days supporting the team. Whether it’s running around the office prepping for photo shoots, steaming clothes for celebrity fittings, tracking press clips, drafting pitches, or checking in and facilitating sample requests for editors and stylists, no day is ever the same— or mundane!

There’s a strong sense of energy here with people coming from so many different places and backgrounds that they all bring something unique to the table. I love having meetings with my co-workers because their ideas are always so inspiring and they challenge me to do better!

|| Favorite healthy snacks to bring to the office? ||

DP: Coconut water + chia seeds, fruit, raw almonds, carrots, hard-boiled eggs, &/or whole-wheat flaxseed crackers.

Nasty Gal x The Skinny Confidential.

The Skinny Confidential talks diet and fitness.

|| Tell us about the yoga room at NG ( I mean!!! ) ||

DP: Our office has a fully functioning fitness room with beautiful hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling mirrors. It’s the perfect place to unwind and relax after a day of work. Yoga, Pop Physique, Hip-Hop, and other fitness classes are available throughout the week and are free to employees! It is kickass because it is so conveniently located & gives everyone the ability to work on their fitness and health.

|| Favorite holiday Nasty Gal looks? ||

DP: I’m loving these for the holidays:

1.} No words needed. Score the best vintage Chanel right now on Nasty Gal.

2.} The perfect pop of color while staying glamorous and warm this winter.

3.} A go to holiday party skirt, throw on a black crop top and platforms and you’re ready to party.

4.} Wear this gold top with black leather jeans for a sexy dinner look.

5.} This leather jacket actually feels like butter.

|| Talk to me about why NG is so successful? ||

DP: Nasty Gal is so successful because it is more than just an online shopping site—it’s style, culture, & attitude all wrapped into one. It’s rare that people can say they both love wearing and working for a brand. We’re authentic and our customers trust us— the Nasty Gal’s are our ride or die’s.

But really.

I’m whipped the F out!

Thankfully in the new year I’m looking forward to execution, healthy living, & more yoga.

Because I def need yoga to prepare for the next holiday season.

LMFAO.

So NYE.

This NYE I’m not so much as looking forward to a night of dress up, midnight kissing, & glitter, as I am for a fresh year in general.

It’s weird to be able to sort of clean the slate & kind of start over, isn’t it?

What are your resolutions? Spill.

Cheers!

Step the F Out of Your Comfort Zone

Updated: September 29, 2015

Lauryn Evarts, fitness blogger, health blogger, and diet blogger talks skinny tips and tricks for weight loss.

Not to get too cheese, but…

Don’t get too comfy.

If you get too comfortable in a relationship, the passion will dwindle.

If you get too comfortable on the couch, you’ll turn in to a fat, lazy turd.

If you get too comfortable in a shitty job, you’ll be F-ing miserable.

And whelp, if you get too comfy in general, you’re not living up to your full potential.

So. Step out of your comfort zone more often.

I’m not talking about hanging out with people who you don’t want to be around or going on a date with someone who’s not so not your type.

Those are ‘thanks but no thanks situations’ ( more on the power of no here ).

Anyway, all I’m saying is this:

Adding a little romance to a relationship never hurt anyone- do something different every so often. Maybe plan a couple’s massage or practice hot yoga by candlelight together.

If you run everyday of the week because you hate lifting weights, then start mixing Pilates to your workout routine. That way it shocks body so it doesn’t plateau. I recently did this with incorporating running into my workout & it’s been a game changer.

Exploring other job options by spending a weekend focusing on changing a negative work environment is much better than sitting on your ass complaining about it.

Routine is boring.

Routine is regressive.

As Henri de Lubac said: “habit and routine have an unbelievable power to waste and destroy.”

So. Don’t get too comfy on the couch. Start venturing outside of your comfort zone— & see what happens ; ).
