HAIR CARE TIPS AND TRICKS | by the skinny confidential

MEOW!

THIS POST HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING. I feel like we need to talk more about hair. Hair is such a representation of where you’re at in life right?

I mean has anyone else ever chopped off their hair after a break-up? ( GUILTY ). Or how about dyed it? ( GUILTY ). Maybe even you forgot to wash it for a week…eer, two? ( GUILTY ).

Regardless I feel like it’s important to always evolve in the hair place.

Mix it up, you know?

Years ago I did a breakdown on all my hair care tips but things like I said, have evolved & sure, I’m still not the best at washing my hair but I most definitely keep my hair game changing.

Let me give you a bit of background- elementary school was the usual: BANGS. Bangs were fun for a hot minute but they’re not for me & kind of look dreadful on me.

HAIR CARE TIPS AND TRICKS | by the skinny confidentialHAIR CARE TIPS AND TRICKS | by the skinny confidential

Thank God I realized this in middle school. Bangs were certainly NOT the theme in middle school. Middle school was bland with a ponytail/high bun here & there.

Then was high school. High school was sort of unfortunate in the hair department. In high school I was the girl who fried my hair with bleach. ARRGGGH. This kind of represented a period when I was on the rocks with a boy & needed a change.

My ponytail, pre-bleach, was SO thick & after the bleach situation it never was quite the same. Which now, makes me very annoyed at my high school self. Because of this I’ve been super vigilant about taking very good care of my hair today ( and skin, if we’re getting specific- but you know that already! ). But we’ll get to that.

High school was all about finding my identity through expressing myself in different ways. One of which was pouring bleach on my head. SO VERY thankful for the moment to end.

In college, I prefered a high bun.

Reason being? I was constantly running around. Between teaching Pure Barre, Pilates, & bartending while attending school full-time, I was kind of a maniac. I did what I could here but I feel like I had a perpetual root & was sort of low maintenance. You gotta do what you gotta do.

After 5 years I started bartending, at this point I’d been blogging for 2-ish years. I recognized that I needed to step up my picture game. Of me. Not just food. SO I found a photographer to do trade with & started to take my hair care seriously. Let’s call this period the OPPOSITE of the high school moments.

This included: lots of masks ( what up, coconut oil! ), castor oil ( the Egyptians used it for balding wayyyyyy back in the day ), a toddler’s hair brush ( not the best at brushing my hair…like ever but a toddler’s hair brush helps get out the knots- trust me ), an active interest in products, The Sleep Bun, & a silk pillowcase.

HAIR CARE TIPS AND TRICKS | by the skinny confidential

Along my hair journey I’ve been lucky enough to pick up a bunch of tips & tricks through blogging.

I’d say this is when I started to feel in sync with my hair care routine, you know?

Today my hair care routine isn’t overly fussy. I mean I certainly like my blowouts ( do you blame me though? I get an HOUR of uninterrupted work done. It’s pure heaven REALLY ). You should know: a blowout also is fabulous maintenance too. You just may have to micro-manage the situation a little. But it works wonders.

I switch my products up too. Lately when I’m at home I’ve been using Herbal Essence. Can you picture me in the shower like a Herbal Essence commercial? I love that commercial where the girl is making amazing noises- it’s perfect in every way. Anyway it’s easy to travel with & when I was in Greece it made the shower smell SOOOO GOOD. MR. I LOVE MY HAIR MICHAEL used it too & smelled like a fresh bouquet of flowers. Herbal Essence is fab because it’s a drugstore product that works- it gives you kind of a bounce. I especially like their Argan Oil- you know I love oils!

HAIR CARE TIPS AND TRICKS | by the skinny confidentialHAIR CARE TIPS AND TRICKS | by the skinny confidential

Regardless one thing that just works for hair in general: CHANGE. Sticking with the same style or look for years & years would be totally boring for me. I am always embracing change. From chopping my hair off, to add clip-in extensions, to ponytails, to braids, to even wigs- switching up hair is fun! Do you agree?

Whenever I feel the need to change-up my hair, I embrace the feeling whole heartedly it’s LIBERATING to switch it up.

The more change, the better when it comes to hair in my opinion.

Hope you’re all having a productive Tuesday!

GET THE LOOK!

FOR ALL THE BLONDIES OUT THERE

July 17, 2017
by
LAURYN

HAIR CARE TIPS 6b | by the skinny confidential HAIR CARE TIPS 4 | by the skinny confidential

Well hello! 10:32PM – & I am calling ALL blondes!

BECAUSE we need talk about how to get icy…you know like cool-toned, icy.

We can throw this back to my high school days when my blonde was BRASSY. If you’re a blonde you know the struggle is real here. Or maybe you’re brunette & you have blonde highlights. Regardless there’s nothing- AND I MEAN NOTHING- worse than walking out of the salon after you just spent $100 dollars plus on your color with brassy highlights.

You know I hate brass. I like cool when it comes to my hair.

I really just feel strongly about fighting against that brass. It’s the worst.

BUT HOW CUTE IS IT WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE BRASS? Because today I’m going to give you my top three BYE BYE BRASSY secrets.

So BELOW are all the details you need to know:

First & foremost let’s be very clear these are all very doable no matter where you live!

1.) Get with a colorist who knows her shit. So many brassy moments can be thoroughly avoided by going to the right colorist. Also if you’re picking extensions opt for cooler tones. I get my extensions from Sam Glamm & we made SURE to choose tones that were cooler so it pulled no brass from my real hair.

HAIR CARE TIPS 11 | by the skinny confidential

{ rocking THE BOOBS TSC phone case | nude purse }

Before you commit to coloring your hair- ask questions! Ask for a portfolio, or do what I do & stalk their Instagram! You want to find someone who is good at their craft, you know? Take your hair seriously- it’s on your face AND you want it to flatter your features not take away from them!

Basically interview your colorist like a CIA agent- get the 411, you know? The more questions the better. ( Tip: screenshot a few IG inspo pictures so you can show your hair colorist visuals of what you’re hoping to attain ).

2.) As you know I went to the 2017 Cannes Film Festival in France with the beauty brand, Dessange Professional Hair Luxury. The main reason I was so excited to go with them is because their products are accessible to everyone AND they have a collection called CALIFORNIA BLONDE. I mean YES because for 1.) the products are found at Target & CVS 2.) you can use them at home with no problems. Since being back from France, I’ve been taking my Dessange Professional Hair Luxury products to the blowout bar ( my favorite place to work! ) to put them to the real test. I always like to try & try ( & try! ) things I’m recommending…& then report back. ( & trust me, there are A LOT OF FAILS you don’t always see- like the cauliflower pizza I just made- it was way too crumbly. Maybe I’ll try another brand ). Anyway. I’m like a human guinea pig in the sense that when I commit to trying something, I really commit.

HAIR CARE TIPS 2 | by the skinny confidential

So back to the blowout bar. I showed up for two months each week to get a blowout with my DESSANGE Professional Hair Luxury California Blonde shampoo & conditioner in hand. Call it a customized TSC blowout, if you will ; ). Washy, wash, scrubby, scrub week after week. Sometimes every two weeks if we’re being honest here because YOU KNOW I HATE WASHING MY HAIR. And sure, my hair girl thinks I’m crazy but that’s neither here nor there.

So here’s a picture after my latest hair dye after using California Blonde for a month & a half ( it’s looking NOT brassy right? ):

HAIR-CARE-TIPS-9b-by-the-skinny-confidentialI feel like my hair looks more radiant too.

3.) Also, another tip that I picked up is their weekly in-shower treatment formulated with Linseed oil & Blue Direct Dyes to neutralize brassiness WHILE nourishing the hair ( which is what we all want ).. YES PLEASE. The blue pigments cancel out the brass- it’s almost like a purple shampoo on crack, ya know? SO YA BRASS BE GONE.

Oh & I should mention the shampoo & conditioner is infused with Passion Flower extracts…smells SO good.

DESSANGE-#3-x-The-Skinny-Confidential-8HAIR CARE TIPS 3 | by the skinny confidential

If you’re not a natural blonde & have to use bleach, you’re usually susceptible to brassy hair because of the way your hair is lightened and toned ( like me! ). Dark hair that’s bleached tends to reveal warm tones ( sometimes red, sometimes banana yellow ). Which is why for me, I REALLY NEED TO TAKE CARE OF MY BLONDE.

Yes, it’s true guys, I was born brunette— maybe one day I’ll go back?

Anyway, quick breakdown for you before I go to keep it simple ( one side is brassy tone & other side is what you need to neutralize it ):

BRASSY | TO NEUTRALIZE

Yellow | Violet
Gold | Violet-blue
Copper | Blue
Copper-red | Blue-green

HAIR CARE TIPS 5 | by the skinny confidential

Other quick hair care tips: use a heat protectant if you’re a big blow-dryer. Dry texturizing spray makes a world of difference- like it gives you depth & edge. Oh, and invest in a quality brush.
…Also I stay away from rubber bands with those ugly metal things on them. They’re horrific because they cause breakage.

Alright, anyone else have any hair secrets? Spill.

Off to read! Drink ginger turmeric tea! Listen to meditation music! The usual!

Goodnight moon, x lauryn

Sass It Up: Old Hollywood Waves

old hollywood waves with pantene | by the skinny confidentialvdhbkfzoj4zm3rkohp1gdxiqhqxhcew3unvtyxgra_eqw19xel80nunefhns8-9ypaeheqfpqd-cjdoix7rmq0xazaqvz2wy0unpeop5o8gclceflwrnouweebxumhnby1owdjbpwd0wyk3ssuyvabknhltoldtub0z7tkrow8mk

NEW YEAR’S EVE is almost here.

Excited for champagne, good music, a new year! Anyone else?

I feel like it’s entirely appropriate to start the New Year with a new hair style. Hence the old Hollywood waves.

( How festive of me! )

Especially in love with this look because I feel like the hair is very Margot Robbie. Right though? AND YES, you can do this at-home…that’s right guys, it’s very simple to recreate these waves on your own.

Alright, let’s get right to it shall we?

You will need:

Bristle brush
Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek Anti-Frizz Shampoo
Pantene Pro-V Smooth & Sleek Finishing Conditioner
Bobby pins
Pantene Smooth and Sleek 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner
Hairspray
Teasing comb
Clipless iron

i04t0s-qvf22394xaxyu82zmqmm2pziqsd-joor_uyoff0nm1kifcwq14kjmir8cnmzz5fxepuddbrrmn6hfvafyjrjuwxezfsizbcr6c7liqo8zrqo_xtpv4x4rbwhs0h1no3ymzx2uq-zaektlv8wz6bgbip0nvbyc5_lb_vf0zqqbufqujrclzckugz-lh_aizcxzm7hkqk1ex7hrw2w70houtgh3cne_rrbumtyblxf_eq9tv__nznrnxvtdn0n0nzuu4ahmtveqdsi4vizbgphzs1wronpdrhwulrhtgjvwdc0xglqjqd1aeb_ztlnx3knslojb5k50ng5hsyyi

Sassy, sexy old Hollywood waves:

1. Start fresh. Wash your hair with Pantene’s Smooth & Sleek shampoo & conditioner which makes your hair smooth for days. You want your hair smooth & sleek for these waves so this product is the perfect prep. Finish off with a 3 Minute Miracle Deep Conditioner. This will provide you with the IDEAL canvas to begin your waves. These products contain anti-humidity technology to lock out frizz and extend that smooth style you’re going for!

2. Blow dry your hair, keep it simple here. Then separate the top section of hair and pin it up. Nothing special here.

3. Hold a 1-inch curling iron vertically, then wrap a large section of hair from the heavier side of your part away from your face to create your first curl. Repeat around head, creating all of the curls in the same direction. KEEP THE CURLER vertical.

4. Mist with hairspray.

5. Part the top section of your hair to the side and repeat the same steps.

6. Use a flat brush to gently brush out your waves, starting from the root from the end, to create the wave pattern. If your hair tends to use its curl, use your fingers. Want more volume? Use the teasing brush to tease it.

7. Lastly pin back one side of your part with a couple bobby pins. Add more hair spray.

yuqzzm62jiv5px0kizlc1l3mcz2w_xfwgi7ibfbtmguoaef4rovvced8tdzyv26neeledbmni0gypmpdnx2ymkecpairnvnov7sybaj69ydxla3mzop3pylhn6hpzv9m4ybikyfotwrblgservygpfu1bde6bnsbtri448sbvhr0bmngtna-kslizjdlukjin8lacxxhrvpew8lzsa4gtnufn7new5b5t8s43_k63m1ets5udy8razcfhkz7oqj-fq9bcyexwwbuevuecxdzae_tfmkilvbfbrxlcemstgh2wstf4qzjpvbt3a96u8e47firgxbd7ggsu5u0rnjq4lm8sq_j7qcus5zviqlo7oyf9qyjabkvdfukqao5s2mf6808i7jfy61lq2jpirlpjkpihbdq_ntxnqxlg5f5xc11uajg0zejyzkfq1rx883fjb4hcyd7uxriuwzb3h8zlw8c4abp4saocxc4d4swrimhvqf2cul5qzl27hokvntzundm

So easy, so fun. I feel like this is kind of a spin on the typical, basic bitch curl.

Plus, I ordered the Pantene products from Amazon, as in straight to my door. I’m so last-minute.

For the outfit here, I threw on a top I wore a few years ago. A metallic get-up for NYE is always good because it’s sparkly without the glitter. The lipstick I’m wearing is BRIGHT pink & it looks very party-esque. This particular color makes teeth appear whiter too. It’s the perfect pink in my opinion. To finish it off I did tons of mascara & some double-sided pearl earrings. Thankfully I had a good spray tan level 1 here too.

By the way, when I’m rocking this hair style I really commit to it. Like I wear it for a few days…like 5? LOL. It’s one of those hairstyles that lasts in the best way possible.

Sometimes, days later when the upper part gets messed up I’ll throw a beanie on & TA-DA it looks chic again. YES PLZ.

Ok, that’s it. Easy waves for ya.

What are your NYE plans? Give me all the juicy details. Live it up!

Cheers guys, lauryn x

LAVENDER / LEMON BRIDAL SHOWER: Part 2

Ecstatic to report our wedding photos are FINALLY ready to showcase. But before we get to that: PART TWO of the bridal shower post. Because I couldn’t leave you hanging with just PART ONE.

The couples shower was too fun not to share. For those of you who saw in real time via Snapchat, there’s more!

Anyway, we didn’t do the unwrapping of presents or any games. Instead we laughed, drank, ate, & played with my cute new nephew, DAX…well Michael hoarded him the whole time. He legit thinks he’s a baby whisperer.

Although the shower was insanely beautiful, we really missed The Nanz. She would have loved the set-up & really appreciated the extensive cheese and pickle platter. We all did a toast in her spirit which she would have loved. She would have been the center of attention for sure…probably rocking her pink jacket with white nails. Missing her more & more each day.

As you know the location was Herb & Wood in San Diego…which is my favorite because their bar is just the most Instagram-able thing I’ve ever seen. Seriously. Go there & order a lavender gin fizz. Garnish it with their grapes because they have PEARL TOOTHPICKS that hold each garnish.

If that’s not chic, I don’t know what is?

They also have pink hummus. AND their wait staff is VERY cute and VERY single ( I asked for my friends ). So ya, run there.

Speaking of location, let’s talk about bridal shower themes & invitations.

It was very important to tell a story from the bachelorette party to the bridal shower to the four-day Cabo shenanigans ( << coming soon! ).

Clearly wanted to start with a light lavender theme & bring it full circle to the wedding. Even so, I still wanted the bridal invites to match with the wedding’s aesthetic somewhat so we opted for dark vibes with a touch of snake-skin to keep it edgy.

Snake-skin was a touch we used throughout the entire process & I lived for the detail with the dark, DARK purple. Kind of different with a twist. Just how I like it.

Just so you can see the vibe we were going for:

If you’re wondering who manages their parent’s party invitations…I do. I really can’t help myself.

Other than that though, my parents set-up the rest. My stepmom, Julie is so talented it’s crazy. I mean she literally handmade the decor. LIKE look at the balloon strings!! Seriously. The lavender streamers & baby’s breathe details on the fireplace were completely crafted by her. I’m jealous of her incredible talent & kindness.

Stalk Julie’s cute blog here.

As for my outfit, the full look can be found here ( you should know I found the dress on Revolve & they’re having a HUGE Cyber Monday sale. 20% off !! Ahhh, I’m screwed ).

And the tutorial of the ponytail moment here.

And like I said, I designed these pretty, dainty hand pieces with CAM JEWELRY & gifted each girl with a bright pink TSC-ish box. Super festive idea for a bridal shower/baby shower/etc.

Check the hand pieces out, do you like?!

While guests were leaving they received three things: a Better Booch Kombucha, a little goodie box, & an espresso shot with a sprig of lavender & a thin swath of lemon peel. Keeping the theme strong all the way through guys.

…Of course, the espresso shot was MAJORLY needed considering how many lavender & lemon mimosas we consumed…HA!

I have to shout out my family & friends. They are everything & I have to say a HUGE THANK YOU to all of them. There’s never any unnecessary drama…or boring moments. LOL. Just good vibes all around…lots of Bossanova, champagne, & laughter. I could have had this party in a shack & we would have still had a fucking ball. Ok…maybe I would have micro-managed the shack’s decor but you get the drift.

If you’re planning a party, the people are what make it! Sometimes that’s a smaller group. Sometimes it’s a larger group. Do what works for you. There’s no ‘right way.’ Do your thing.

On that note, we’re on to the wedding tomorrow. Again bear with me, there’s a lot of bridal content to share! I’m off to watch Westworld ( who’s seen it? ) & eat apple chips in bed. Lately the cinnamon apple chip addiction is frightening. Random, but what else is new? Crumbs are everywhere.

See you guys tomorrow, happy Cyber Monday!
