{ Me & Carly at my bachelorette party }

AS WE KNOW I’m sort of clueless when it comes to mommyhood.

Like very, VERY clueless.

I’m always asking my sister, Faye ( << she’s coming on the podcast soon! ) & my girlfriends, Jackie & Carly, random questions. Sometimes I think they think I’m BAT-SHIT CRAZY because of the questions I ask…eer, let’s just say I don’t know a lot about babies?

SO to switch things up tonight, Carly ( who you’ve met here//here//here//here//here ), is sharing all her secret mommy tricks with TSC readers who are moms, pregnant, or considering mommyhood.

That’s right, she’s going to give us some FABULOUS TIPS. Over to you, Carly:

♡ | ♡ | ♡ | ♡ | ♡
Hi guys, it’s Carly!

Becoming a mom has been the most incredible experience of my life. I always knew I wanted to be a mom and I love my boys so much it hurts! There is really no feeling like it. All that said, being a mom is HARD. Taking care of little people can be overwhelming and at times, just plain exhausting. I want to share five practices that make mommyhood a little easier for me.

Establishing some set routines and practices throughout my week makes it possible for me to take care of my people ( myself included ) as well as all the other important stuff that needs to be handled when you’re a mama.

CARLY’S TIPS FOR MAKING #MOMLIFE MANAGEABLE:

{ MORNINGS }

I try to make every morning very similar because kids crave structure. One of the favorite times of the day for my family is morning time. Breakfast is our time together. My husband Adam (who is super helpful and an awesome partner, by the way) wakes up everyday with Rio. I usually nurse Dante then head downstairs shortly after.

Rio often helps me make smoothies and we drink those first, then Rio and Adam play while I make breakfast. We make green smoothies and a big breakfast every morning, religiously. I think drinking green smoothies daily has impacted our health tremendously and it only takes 5-10 minutes, tops. So it’s doable, but if you are really crunched for time in the mornings you could make a batch at the beginning of the week and freeze them. This morning routine gets our day off to a good start and because Rio is getting so many nutrients right at the beginning of the day, I know he will function well regardless of what happens the rest of our day.

I realize mornings are busy for a lot of people, but this works for us. Making green smoothies has become therapeutic and drinking them helps all of us feel awake and alive. We all feel ready for our day after breakfast time. Establishing this smoothie/breakfast routine gives us time to talk about the day ahead and Rio always knows what to expect. We also have a bedtime routine that we stick to very closely after dinner time. Having some sort of routine throughout the day helps kids feel secure and keeps me feeling sane.

{ ESSENTIALS }

By essentials, I mean the stuff that really HAS to get done. Sunday is my day for this. I usually go to a yoga class then hit up my favorite farmer’s market & one grocery store  (Trader Joe’s or Costco are usually in rotation). My husband knows that yoga is essential for me to feel healthy and grocery shopping is something I really enjoy doing on my own. So we work it out so that on Sundays, I usually have a good 3-4 hour block all to myself after breakfast. This time is sacred to me. Going to these markets alone is so helpful because I don’t feel rushed and I can focus because I don’t have to worry about the kiddos.

All mamas have different things they really MUST get done during the week in order for their world to work. Figure out what things you can get done with the kids in tow and what things you need to do on your own. Then work with your partner to figure out a plan. Most days of the week I can’t make it to a yoga class or the gym, so I do a walk with my double stroller. I love walking and being outside when I exercise so I’ve figured out a way to do it with the kids and it’s a great workout.

Prioritizing what is essential for me has really helped me figure out how and when to get it all done.

{ SELF CARE }

Self-care is about finding some time to do what makes me happy. Going to the farmer’s market and grocery store does make me happy, but they are also essential errands. Taking care of yourself means finding some time to do the things you enjoy, things that are wants, not needs. Maybe this means having dinner with girlfriends, going to the movies without kids, getting a pedicure, reading or writing, going to the gym or to a coffee shop, going to the library, getting your hair done, or getting a massage or facial.

I get a massage once a month and it is heavenly. And because I know it’s just once a month, I really look forward to it. It is in the calendar and nothing (well almost nothing) trumps it. All mamas have different things they want to make time for.

For me, it’s important to find a couple hours a week where I’m doing something by and for myself.

{ MEAL PLANNING }

Feeding my family healthy meals is extremely important to me. In order to do this, I need to have a plan. I start by thinking about what I made the previous week so that I can do different things the next week. Throughout the week, I make a grocery list in my phone as I think of things or come up with ideas. By Sunday, I have a list pretty much completed. I have separate lists in the notes section of my phone for every place I shop. These lists include everything I purchase from each store I frequent. I usually put a checkmark next to what I need for that week. This is super helpful to me because I used to always forget things I needed or forget the list entirely.

Since we eat a primarily plant-based diet, I always try to switch up the veggies I use weekly. I try to buy what is in season at the Farmer’s Market and go from there. I always make sure I have 4-5 different veggies to work with for the week. Examples of veggies I almost always have include spinach, carrots, onion, celery, sweet potatoes, zucchini, bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, and broccoli. Plus a couple different greens like kale, collards, romaine or chard for smoothies. Since I have a Tower Garden, I don’t always have to buy my greens. I buy eggs at the Farmer’s Market too. I also try to switch up the fruit I buy every week and I always have tons of bananas (for smoothies and baking- bananas are so versatile!) and always frozen fruit (organic strawberries and blueberries from Costco) for our smoothies. I always have apples; Rio and I each eat one a day. I make sure my pantry is stocked with items like brown rice pasta, lentil pasta, beans, oats, lentils, nuts, rice, marinara sauce, quinoa, etc.  I plan meals for the week based around what veggies I have.

Mom Tip: If I’m stuck or not feeling creative, I rely on my good buddy, Google. I type in the ingredients I have to work with and I can almost always get a fresh idea or recipe. Or I just text Lauryn for ideas.

I usually only plan 4 dinners a week. We usually have leftovers a couple times that week and maybe take out or out to dinner once a week. For breakfast we always have our green smoothie and usually eggs or oatmeal powered up with veggies/seeds/healthy fats. Lunch is usually light because we have huge breakfasts-think hummus and veggies with apples and nut butter, avocado toast, or maybe if we had oatmeal for breakfast we would do eggs for lunch and vice versa. Sometimes we eat lunch on the go, so sliced bell peppers, cucumbers and blanched green beans are easy veggies to throw in a baggie and eat without making a mess. I always put an apple in our lunch bag too, and maybe a Mamma Chia pouch or a Perfect Food Bar.

Planning meals for the week makes life so much easier.

{ DATE NIGHT }

Sometimes I’m so busy momming ( It should be a word, don’t you think?! ) that I don’t feel like I have time to connect with my husband. Fortunately, my parents are amazing and offer to help us all the time with my kids, so we recently scheduled a date night every other Wednesday. Dressing up & taking time for ourselves has been a game changer!

When Rio was born, we didn’t have family around, so we rarely had a night out. I can totally relate to anyone who doesn’t want to leave their kids with a sitter. I am that mom. One really great thing my husband and I did when we were in that situation was had a date night IN. On Friday nights after putting Rio to bed, I would make dinner or we’d get take out, open a bottle of wine and talk. We would eat at the dining room table without TV and hang out together while the baby slept. We had to make it a point to catch up and connect.  We looked forward to Friday nights all week.

“Date Night” doesn’t always have to happen at night or even away from home. It’s about making time for each other every week, regardless of when, where or how. We are convinced that our weekly dates keep our relationship healthy.

These are the things that help me stay on top of my mom game. Mamas- figure out what works for you and don’t forget to take care of your own needs!

Our babies will be better for it.

The Skinny Confidential talks to pregnant mom, Carly Feagler/Zuff.

Ok so obviously I’m pretty much clueless when it comes to pregnancy.

Because I’ve never been pregnant. So what a clueless girl to do?

Naturally, turn to her friends.

& in this case, my friend happens to be a hot piece of ass ( << can I say that about a soon to be mama? Hope so. ).

You guys have met Carly Zuffinetti here//here//here//here, so you know she’s super knowledgeable about health, fitness, & everything in between.

So when Carly told me she was starting an Instagram account ( @thepreggerspantry ) on how to have a healthy pregnancy, I freaked. I wanted to get her on the blog ASAP so she could share all her secret tips & tricks with TSC readers who are moms, pregnant, or potentially wanting to get preg.

Anyway, enjoy lovas:

Who says you can’t be pretts and pregs?!

Unfortunately, I’m not one of those girls who looks totally gorgeous and glowing as a pregger. Everything is getting a little bigger and my skin is far from lovely. However, I feel REALLY healthy & super grateful that I have been lucky enough to not experience morning sickness or other ailments that often go along with being pregnant. Other than being exhausted, my first trimester was a breeze!! I’m twenty-two weeks along & feeling great!

❤ FOOD/DIET:

I know a lot of women get horribly sick during pregnancy. Headaches, vomiting, & nausea usually top the list. I can’t relate to that and I’m sure constantly feeling sick would make it really hard to eat healthy. Let’s get real- who wants a salad when your tummy is upset? I have a few food aversions & there are many days where I would be perfectly happy eating pizza & cereal for every meal, but I know that’s not best for the baby. So I force myself to eat super duper healthy throughout the day and then have whatever I’m craving ( within reason ) for dinner. And ladies, you aren’t literally eating for two when you are pregnant, so don’t use pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever you want. Fast food, sugar, & processed foodsare not the best choices for that little cutie growing inside you.

Here are a few examples of my food choices. My diet hasn’t changed too much from before I was pregnant.

♡ Breakfast:

I always drink a blended green drink first thing in the morning. This morning I had spinach, kale, celery, cucumber, lemon, ginger, banana, coconut water, & chia seeds. Throw it all into your Vitamix or blender and it’s that easy. About thirty minutes after that I ate a hard boiled egg and piece of cinnamon raisin Ezekiel toast with Nutzo, coconut oil, cinnamon, and honey on top. Other days I have a green drink then oatmeal with blueberries and walnuts or a hard boiled egg with grapefruit.

♡ Snack:

I’m definitely hungrier now that I’m pregnant, so I always have fresh fruit & nuts on hand. Today I had a blood orange and an apple and some Kombucha. I almost always try to eat fruit at this time of the day. Mango, blueberries, oranges, & apples are my faves.

♡ Lunch:

I always have a huge salad or a veggie sandwich with avocado. My salads vary I have tons of greens, veggies, raisins or cranberries, quinoa, avocado &/or a hard boiled egg. I like Happy Pantry’s kraut on my salad too, which is a great way to get your probiotics.About an hour after lunch I drank the other half of my Kombucha.

♡ Snack:

Before I workout I have some almonds or walnuts. Sometimes I grab a KIND bar or a Suja Juice ( << P.S. they’re offering TSC readers 5% off online; enter SKINNYSUJA at checkout ) at this time too.

♡ Dinner:

Anything! I usually have wild salmon at least once a week. I also love grilled mahi mahi tacos. I eat a lot of lentils and sweet potatoes. I make my own version of the Chipotle bowl with black beans and veggies. Some nightsjust cheese and veggie sandwiches with my panini maker or breakfast for dinner. These are just examples of some of my staples. I have pizza every once in awhile too.

If ( & when ) I get a sweet tooth I go for a some dark chocolate almonds, coconut milk ( vegan ) ice cream, or a healthy cereal with almond milk ( I only buy Nature’s Path Organic cereals these days ).

Don’t forget to take your prenatal vitamins! I started taking these as soon as I stopped taking my birth control pills. I like the brand Mega Food ‘Baby and Me’ which you can purchase at Whole Foods. I also take prenatal Spectrum’s DHA & calcium.

❤ EXERCISE:

I cannot stress this one enough! Even when you don’t want to or you are so exhausted, do it anyway! Trust. It’s been my saving grace. Do something everyday, even if it’s just a walk. I ALWAYS feel better and more energized after I do. If you were active before pregnancy, keep doing what you are doing ( with the exception of extreme sports, of course ). I love walking, hiking, yoga, and tennis. My friend even let me borrow some great pregnancy workout videos. My doctor described pregnancy as having twenty times more hormones than when you’re menstruating. Exercise is crucial just to keep yourself sane!! One of the pregnancy books I’ve read says that exercise is “a cure all”, & I agree!

❤ SKIN CARE:

Personally, I don’t really use anything unnatural on my skin, so I continue to lather my body, especially my belly, with coconut oil and Vitamin E oil after I shower. I treat my blemishes with tea tree oil and aloe from my aloe plant. I also got some good skin mask recipes from Kimberly Snyder’s website that use nothing but aloe, honey, cinnamon, & turmeric. Don’t use anything harsh on your skin. For my monthly facials, my esthetician Brandie Aviles at Queen Bee Skin Boutique uses The Body Deli products ( love their mud mask ), a wonderful, organic skin care line. She even adds in a little head massage during the facial that feels amazing! I also continue to take a couple tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily which is said to promote clear skin, soothe heartburnand help with digestion issues, which many women suffer from during pregnancy.

❤ BE POSITIVE:

Being pregnant is such a miracle! Even though you may not feel or look your best- just embrace it! Be happy! Don’t be the girl who talks about how fat & ugly you feel or how much weight you’ve gained. In fact, don’t EVER be that girl!! Your baby needs positive vibesand a stress free environment. Don’t feel sorry for yourself- there are times where you feel sick, down in the dumps, or crabby. When you start to feel that way, think about all the women in this world who would give anything to have a baby and experience what you are so lucky to be going through. Find a little time everyday to talk to and think about your baby. Go to prenatal yoga classes- they help both physically and emotionally. Find a pregnant friend who knows what you’re dealing with so you don’t have to vent to your husband constantly. Make time for yourself- go hiking or to brunch with girlfriends, get a prenatal massage, or facial. Your baby is a blessing, enjoy every minute of having a life inside you, it truly is amazing!

OMG. My friend, Carly, had her bachelorette party this weekend & it.was.insane.

A total TSConf approved party. Like, she realllly hosted an amazing bash.

On her itinerary?

The celebration was catered by Beaming ( a health & vitality bar based out of Del Mar, California ). The menu included ‘crack balls’ ( they’re these raw/vegan/gluten-free tiny balls made with coconut oil ), veggies with Bitchin’ Sauce, sweet potato chips, kale salad, coconut & tomato ceviche, flaxseed crackers, guacamole, & fresh pressed juices ( to mix with tequila & champagne— naturally ).

Not only was the party stocked with fresh & healthy foods, there were also manicurists, masseuses, & makeup/hair artists.

We finished off the poolside event at Searsucker in downtown San Diego. Dinner was delish: an arugula salad, slice of fish, & a strawberry Suja cocktail.

So ya, we partied. But we partied smart: fresh juice cocktails, healthy party eats, & massages.

It’s so much more fun to party with healthy food, peeps. ESP the next morning. It makes the hangover a little bit easier ; ).

Anyway a big thank you ( & congrats!!! ) to Carly & Adam for making Saturday so special.

Bombshell Bride Carly Feagler: How to Get into Amazing ‘Wedding Shape’

Updated: August 19, 2016
by
LAURYN

Carly Feagler talks skinny tips and tricks with fitness and diet blogger, Lauryn Evarts.

Check out my smoking hot GF, Carly. Not only is she gorg, she’s also the sweetest girl EVER.

Carly recently got engaged to her fiancé, Adam:

Lauryn Evarts talks to Carly Feagler about everything wedding, quick skinny tips, and snacking tricks.

How freaking cute are they? I mean, right? They just may be the most adorable couple on the planet. The second she told me they were engaged I wanted to know all the deets on her wedding prep. Here ya go, babes:

+ Introduce yourself:

Carly Feagler: I’m a special education school teacher who is a self-proclaimed Yogi, dog lover, foodie, traveler, & lover of all things healthy and green! I just got engaged to my fabulous fiancé, Adam & we’re super excited to tie the knot July 6, 2013.

+ Weekly workout routine + wedding fitness plan:

CF: I’m a firm believer in switching up my exercise routine daily. However, I still tend to be a creature of habit so having a weekly routine works best for me. To prepare for my big day in July, my goal is to stay firm with my current weekly routine, adding one extra hot yoga class each week. My weekly routine will be as follows: hot yoga three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays. I like to switch up yoga studios, but Core Power Yoga is my favorite right now because their classes fit any schedule. They have two locations that are super convenient for me, and they give student, teacher, & military discounts! On Tuesdays I will do a yoga sculpt class so that I have a little weight training in my routine. Every Thursday I play cardio tennis with a girlfriend. This is our own made up thing- we just play a couple matches & it’s a great workout. Since neither of us are star players we run each other around the court a lot!  Tons of fun!

On the weekends I allow myself some flexibility, as long as I get a good sweat in! Usually on Saturdays I love to go on a long bike ride then a walk at the beach with my dog. On Sundays my fiancé and I like to walk with our dog around the Rancho Santa Fe golf course, which is about a two & a half mile walk. I love my weekly workouts. This type of routine is fun, I don’t get bored, & I look forward to all my different activities throughout the week!

Lauryn Evarts talks to Carly Feagler about everything wedding, quick skinny tips, and snacking tricks.

+ Favie Body Part?

CF: If had to pick one body part to flaunt in an LBD it would be my booty. I’ve learned to embrace my bubble butt.

+ Trend you’re loving:

CF: My favorite trend right now is COLOR! I always add a punch of color to every outfit. My favs right now are colorful bags, jewelry, & shoes. Think mint green, orange, & plum.

+ Natural Beauty Product:

CFOrganic coconut oil! I use it as a hair mask about once a week and also as body moisturizer-it keeps the skin so soft. Not only is it a beauty product, I also use it almost daily for cooking, baking, & even as a topper for my dog’s food [ it’s really good for dogs’ oral hygiene & coat ]. Favorite natural makeup line is Tarte. I love their marajuca oil & cheek stain in apricot, bronzer in Park Avenue Princess, & smolderEYE eye liners.

+ Quick Skinny Tips?

CF: Drink warm water with lemon first thing every morning, followed by blended greens [ see my recipe below ].  Also, take two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily. I mix it with 1/4 grapefruit juice + a cup of water to dilute the vinegar taste a bit.

+ Fav Healthy Snacks?

CF: Coconuts [ pre-cut at Whole Foods; the juice is delicious & don’t forget to eat the meat ], fermented veggies [ local fav found here– the “Power Krautage” is the BEST ], apples with peanut or almond butter, pistachios, & avocados with a little sea salt. I love food & have learned that when you start eating healthy your body no longer wants the bad stuff!  I like clean, natural foods.

Lauryn Evarts talks to Carly Feagler about everything wedding, quick skinny tips, and snacking tricks.

+ Let’s talk cocktails…

CF: I LOVE a fresh margarita. Don Julio tequila, splash of Grand Marnier, lots & lots of fresh lime juice, shaken and served up freezing cold. Lauryn makes the best skinny margs!

+ Five Fashion Essentials:

CF: Since I am a school teacher, I do a ton of traveling in the summer. I live in bathing suits, little, lightweight dresses [ think Urban Outfitters ], & hats. These are the five things I can’t live without in the summertime:

1.} Black Ray Bans: especially the foldable wayfarers.

2.} MOR Perfume Oil in Marshmallow: smells amazing.

3.} Noon earrings– love for day to night looks, & they’re local.

4.} Bumble & bumble Surf Spray: great for sexy hair on the go!

5.} Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer w/SPF 20 Tarte 24/7 lip sheer w/SPF 15 in ‘Summer Fling.’

+ Quick Easy Recipes?

CF: I drink this every single morning- swear by it. I know there are a ton of green drink recipes out there, but it’s always fun to mix it up!

Green Juice

About 4-5 handfuls of organic kale, chard or spinach [ I use two or all three, depending what’s in the fridge ], fresh lemon juice [ one lemon ], fresh ginger [ as preferred ], 1 tablespoon of organic flax seed oil, 1 cup water, & 1 banana. Blend & enjoy daily!

Coconut Blueberry Quinoa With Lime

[ Serves 4 ]

2 cups cooked quinoa
1/2 cup light coconut milk
2 limes, juiced
1 cup fresh blueberries
Dab of honey to taste

+ Directions: Cook the quinoa to package directions and measure out 2 cups into a medium mixing bowl. Allow to cool. Mix in the rest of the ingredients & enjoy! Note: I highly recommend rinsing the quinoa before cooking it, even if the box says it’s already rinsed. It tones down the earthy flavor considerably & allows the other flavors to come through. Also, if you double the recipe, only use 3/4 cup coconut milk; 1 cup is too much.

Energy balls

1 cup dry oatmeal
1 cup toasted coconut flakes
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter [ I use 1/4 almond butter & 1/4 cup peanut butter ] 1/2 cup ground flaxseed
1/3 cup honey
1 tsp. vanilla

+ Directions: Stir all ingredients together in a medium bowl until thoroughly mixed. Let chill in the refrigerator for half an hour. Once chilled, roll into balls of whatever size you would like. Mine were about 1″ in diameter. Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to one week. Sub different nut butter & dried fruits, if desired.
