Organic Makeup, What UP

When it comes to makeup, I’m very specific.

I’m not a one type of brand kind of person, I pick the best products from each line.

For instance, I can’t live without my Bold Brow Kit by Anastasia Beverly Hills but then again, I love Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer…& shit, I also love Benefit’s ‘Watts Up.’ Clearly I can’t make up my mind on ONE brand. You can see what’s in my Caboodle ( yes, Caboodle ) here.

On that note, I’m open to trying lots of different products. So when I went to sushi with my friend, Carly recently she told me about something different: organic beauty products. When Carly got pregnant she really started researching products. Including her makeup. Basically she broke down the following stats over sea-salted edamame & salmon sashimi:

+ Decades of studies indicate that serious health issues ( including, but not limited to asthma, learning disabilities, cancer and infertility ) are on the rise, and due in some part to our ongoing exposure to toxic chemicals—whether it’s in the shower, on our commute, while we eat lunch at a local restaurant, or when we clean our kitchens at home.

+ There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Many don’t have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry.

+ Only about 10% of the 10,000 chemicals commonly found in personal care products have safety data.

+ What’s worse is the Food and Drug Administration ( the agency that regulates cosmetics ) allows companies to use chemicals known to be extremely harmful ( lead, formaldehyde, & phthalates ) in the products we put on our bodies and on our kids every single day, day after day.

+ The United States has not passed a federal law to regulate the ingredients used in personal care products since 1938.

+ The European Union has spent the past two decades banning or restricting more than 1,300 ingredients, the US has only banned 11 to date.

HMMMMMMMMM….

Now, I balance my life like a checkbook. While I love organic blueberries in my AM smoothie, my drugstore mascara is probably the farthest thing from organic makeup on the planet ( can’t win ’em all ).

BUT. Organic makeup/products still spark my curiosity…like, I still want to know about them…& even try them out.

Because I’m constantly on the hunt for new products, different opinions, &/or cool ideas, it’s totally not surprising that I was intrigued, right?

Carly sent me some organic makeup products from Beautycounter to test out & naturally, there were a couple I loved.

SO spotlight on:

♡ ROSE WATER: because what girl in the world doesn’t love the idea of waking up & casually spritzing rose water on her face? Especially when it’s all natural organic rose water? Helllllo. This is so Elizabeth Taylor/Valley Of The Doll-ish in all the right ways. The rose water now sits pretty on my nightstand. So sexy.

♡ DEWY MOISTURIZER: this is tinted. Anything that’s moisturizing & tinted is a total win. I love the word dewy ( have you noticed? ). There’s nothing better than a dewy, fresh glow. Nothing greasy, just a little dew— ya know? Over the matte look, in to the dew. Since it’s organic & all-natural, I’m in to it even more.

♡ EYE LINER: for some reason one of my favorite products on the site was the organic eye liner. Reason being: if I’m putting something near my eye there’s some time of relief knowing it’s natural. Typically I just use eye liner when I’m working or going out, so this is perfect for someone like me who’s not an everyday eye liner girl.

♡ JASMIINE OIL: Carly sent me this jasmine oil & I was immediately hooked. As you know, I love using oils to remove my makeup. With this one, you can take off makeup AND use it as an after makeup moisturizer. YUM right? Organic, all-natural, AND moisturizing. YES PLZ.

Obviously I still have my ride or dies in my makeup bag BUT I will definitely be adding a couple of these organic products in to the mix.

THOUGHTS? WEIGH IN.

  1. I’m OBSESSED with looking up ingredients in my makeup, I’m a total beauty junkie. I wish beauty counter’s moisturizers didn’t contain silicone it makes me break out 🙁 But don’t worry, i used to only shop at sephora and found out most drug store makeup is much safer than “prestige” brands. I use physicians formula mascara now 😉

    1. Hi Lauren, SO interesting. Have you asked a doctor why it makes you break out? I would love to know more info! Thanks for reading <3

  2. So glad you made the switch! That’s why I became an Arbonne consultant- I had nooooo idea how much shit was in my everyday makeup! And wearing dead animals on my face is a huge “no f*ing thanks!” Lol
I love knowing all my products are free of nastiness.
P.s. I still use my Watts Up everyday too ? That stuff is like gold!

    1. Hi Ashlee, I know right?? It’s crazy we don’t know every single ingredient in a product that we put on our face every single day! It’s literally nuts. Glad you agree! Thanks for reading and yes Watts Up is seriously amazing. xx

  3. I swear by breaking down my routine to fewer, better items. I think it makes all the difference. And I hadn’t even thought about considering that eye liner for example comes so close to the eyes. Duh! That’s a really good point. I just read about someone using cocoa powder as a bronzer, brow powder and dry shampoo and thought that was really interesting as well!

    1. Hi Anna! That is super interesting. How did they apply it? I imagine it’s kind of messy?? How do they store the cocoa powder for application? Makeup comes in specific cases so it’s easy to apply, I wonder if that would be harder if you’re using cocoa powder. Thanks for reading! xx

  4. Hey Lauryn!
I think it’s horrifying what the cosmetic industry is putting in their products while claiming to create something good for you!
I’m from Germany so we have quite a few regulations, but I always check the ingredient list as I don’t want any silicones, parabens or other harmful additives on or in my body. There’s a german website called codecheck.info where I look up all the products I consider buying in the drugstore. It gives you information about the ingredients, their purpose and whether it’s harmful. For me it’s worth the effort because I don’t want to use products who can thin out your skin, affect your hormones or fertility. I’m really happy that in Germany we have an amazing drugstore where you can buy super cheap organic cosmetics and all kinds of organic packaged food.
Really missing this one right now because I’m living in Spain until summer (which still has to go a long way to become as conscious as Germany about preservatives, additives and organic products).
Lots of love for you and your blog!

    1. Hi Charlotte, you are SO lucky! I wish it was more mainstream here. For the most part you have to figure it out on your own and check the ingredients yourself. There are a lot of great stores in CA though, and online of course. Which brands are your favorites? Would love to try them! Thanks for reading <3

  5. I love this post! As a chemist, I am very paranoid about the chemicals in my makeup and face products. I either make my own stuff or buy organic when I can! I love rose water! I have been making my own for years & it smells heavenly and is so refreshing! I will have to check out the link to your other stuff. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Alexis! How do you make rose water yourself? Is it easy to do? Would LOVE to make some of my own, I am so addicted. Send me details? xx

  6. Definitely interested! I’m about to run out of my tinted moisturizer so may give this a try! I also love that the cost of these products is not insane, like some organic products are.

  7. that bar cart is simply GORGEOUS! I wish I had that in my house.
As for makeup, I wear so little anyway, that organic is not something that really bothers me too much. If I was wearing foundation/concealer/all that jazz, then yes i’d probably be a bit more concerned.

    1. Hi Beverley, which brands do you wear when you DO wear makeup? Also, do you have a bar cart at home? I have them everywhere, I literally use the for everything. My bathroom towels, bubble bath, drinks in my office, in Michael’s office and bathroom, bar carts are so chic! xx

  8. Yes to organic makeup! Have you heard of the Environmental Working Group website? It rates almost all beauty products on a safety scale based on their chemical content. I’ve also noticed that many mainstream brands at Sephora are free of the worst nasties (thank god – love my mainstream eyeshadow :P).

Hope you had a good holiday lady! xx

    1. Hi Jill, no I haven’t heard of Environmental Working Group. I’ll check it out. Sounds so useful! Thanks for the tip <3

  9. I didn’t think Beauty Counter was organic but rather it’s really just a brand that doesn’t allow a lot of chemicals that Europe has banned. The USA definitely allows most not all chemicals that are on the banned list in Europe! I wanted to love BC but it broke me out terribly. Their packaging is perfection! I switched over to Kiehl’s products for skincare and love em. Here’s a link to their FAQ’s that explains they use organic product when available and how their stuff isn’t all natural. Just an FYI. http://www.beautycounter.com/faqs/

  10. So happy to see you talking about organic makeup Lauryn. We focus so much on the organic foods we put in our body but until recently I hadn’t thought at all about what I put ON my body – I love Beauty Counter. Their products are a totally different experience than the ones I tried from places like Whole Foods…give them a try folks. You will be happy.

    XO,

    Catherine

    1. Hi Catherine, so glad you love Beauty Counter. I agree the makeup options at whole foods are a little limited. I do love the different moisturizing lib balms though! xx

  11. I definitely try to keep my products more natural (if not organic) and def cruelty free, but I haven’t yet tried Beauty Counter, so thanks for the intro. In general though it’s so great that we are starting to get a lot more of these brands on the market and that they are becoming easy to purchase. Tarte makes some great products, and you can purchase in Sephora! Same with Bite Beauty for lips. Pacifica also has some nice products and you get get it at Ulta and Target.

That said, I care most about natural stuff when it comes to skincare. Think about it, you WANT your skincare products to sink into the skin, so you are literally consuming them. Ok, stepping off pedestal.

    1. Hi Whitney, thank you for the recommendations! I completely agree, it makes me so happy to see organic, healthy products on the market. THANK GOD! Thanks for commenting <3

  12. I just ordered the Essentials Line from BeautyCounter and it is being shipped to me as we speak. I hope my skin reacts well to this line – I want to become more balanced and take away the nasty chemicals in most products. I also read that my favorite perfume was causing more estrogen than normal so I quit using it. There are so many things we are exposed to everyday so I am happy to try something that is safe. Let’s pray it doesn’t tear my sensitive skin up.

  13. You should try RMS… Really…. Love the brand… Everything is organic and their luminizer is my go to product ( and the lip2cheeks).One of the favorite brands of Miranda Kerr! You should check it out,Lauren!

    Xo, Caroline

  14. Keep us posted on what you think of these after a while- if you revert back to other products or if they become a must have! Thanks for sharing! I also try to “balance my life like a checkbook” must’ve gotten that from TSC 😉

  15. Hey Lauryn!

Have you tried any of Jessica Alba’s line, Honest Beauty? I’ve gradually been trying out some of her products and I have fallen in love with the Everything Primer, Luminzing Powder, and the Magic Balm.

These two have been my go-to all natural makeup products that I use everyday. The Everything Primer’s main ingredient is Hyaluronic acid and peony root which firms and plumps the skin. It’s also fused with orange flower water and mica. It is light and give you that DEWY & PLUMP finish that I too love!

The Luminizing Powder is also great and its talc free. I definitely recommend these two products to try out.

The magic balm is all purpose – i dab a bit on my cheek bones and my lips for a dewy, fresh finish. I also use it on my cuticles for moisture. There is a blend of botanical oils and that give the perfect amount of moisture without feeling too thick and heavy.

    Try em out!

    1. Hi Rebecca, I’M OBSESSED with Jessica Alba’s line. I need to get more of the beauty products, I love everything from Honest. GREAT stuff. Thanks for sharing your favorits <3

  16. I like your t-shirt!! Those purple roses are so pretty, too…
I don’t have any special focus on organic makeup, I wear dept store foundation, drug store mascara, and then stuff gifted to me where I have 0 provenance of where it’s from!
One thing I’ve been doing lately with the colder weather and indoor heating taking a toll – I always wash with soap/cleanser at night, but in the morning I will wash with water and a handful of lotion. It is weird but seems to help with dryness.

  17. Love this post. I recently have been loving the brand juice beauty for skincare stuff. There blemish free line is amazing!

  18. As much as I try and use organic products, I tend to drop the ball when it comes to cosmetics. I’ve always suffered from breakouts, so I’ve always seen it as a lost cause because of the medicine I already have to use on my face (that is anything BUT organic). I did make one switch lately, and started using tepezcohuite cream as a moisturizer, and the one I use has things like aloe, honey, and lactobacillus. Apparently it used to be used for burns in the past in Mexico for it’s healing properties, and Selma Hayek swears it is what keeps her skin looking so young!

Also, I just wanted to add that I would LOVE if you added a “search” bar to your website! Sometimes I want to go back to an old post and it can take a while to find the post that I am looking for. Just a suggestion 🙂

  19. I just started using 100 Percent Pure tinted moisturizer and cream blush and am in love! When reading their ingredients I can actually understand what each thing is.

  20. Yes to all the great info on natural beauty – but I’m going to skip ahead to where did you get that adorable heart themed outfit? Thx!

  21. I love using rosewater as a toner! I’ve been doing this for a few months now, it’s so refreshing and so good for the skin 🙂 P.s. Love the Valley of the Dolls reference!! Best book. Xx

  22. yes! more posts like this please!!
i love living libations maidenfern blush but i’m on the hunt for longwear all natural eyeliner.

  23. I work this little company you may have heard of called Lush cosmetics… They are phenomenal in every way. 100% vegetarian, about 80% vegan. All natural, using fresh fruits and veggies, essential oils. Beyond their products they are amazing with their ethical sourcing of ingredients, humanitarian outreach, fighting animal testing, and a multitude of campaigns for human rights the environment and animal rights. My skin has always been decent but in the last year of using their skin products my skin is just new. Never have I ever seen it so beautiful. Check em out.

  24. I never thought I’d be the type to say I <3 organic makeup, but I <3 organic makeup! I use Miessence, and I started using organic because of all those potential toxins (phthalates, formaldehyde, etc) in the non-organic stuff. I just did a review of so called "natural" mineral makeup – http://livesimpleliveorganic.com/certified-organic-mineral-makeup/ Spoiler alert: use certified organic. Anything less is potentially greenwashed. <3 p.s. I love your site!

  25. I recommend the mascara by the company 100 percent pure! My BF’s mom gave me a sample tube and it is so amazing it made me switch from my beloved drug store brand! Fruit pigmented and it makes lashes look extra long! Check it out 🙂

  26. Was reading through some of the comments and thought I’d address some of the questions I saw! BeautyCounter is definitely not considered “organic,” but it is an incredibly healthy brand and is completely safe for people to use. Health and safety should definitely be our No. 1 priority with skincare, as becoming certified organic is a very long and expensive process for companies (and, tbh, poison ivy is organic but you wouldn’t want to rub that all over your body, right?).

BeautyCounter is free of toxic and harmful chemicals, and is a great brand to switch to! I also highly recommend Vapour Cosmetics, RMS Beauty, W3LL People, Ilia, Jane Iredale and Stowaway. All are healthy and safe!

A great app to check everything you use is ThinkDirty. You can scan barcodes of products, and it will tell you a “dirty” rating from 0-10. Lots of products that people assume are natural are actually pumped full of chemicals (Kiehl’s, TONS of baby products, etc…). ThinkDirty breaks it all down into plain English. Can’t recommend it enough!
