You know what makes me happy?

Like, really, genuinely happy-happy.

Reading.

Escaping reality & living in someone else’s world is distracting in the best way possible. You sort of lose yourself.

& genre of my choice? Welp, I’m a real sucker for autobiographies.

You?

Anyway, this Sunday I spent some time reading Sharper Objects by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn. (( BT-dubs: if you haven’t read Gone Girl, you’re seriously, seriously missing out on life. It starts off kinda of slow, but the ending is insane )). Gillian’s books analyze human behavior…think: why people are the way they are…& that’s always fun to observe, right ; )?

K, so the point of this post: I’m almost done with my latest book & need to know: what are your favorite books? I’m not a sci-fi-magical-The NeverEnding story-hop-on-Falkor’s-back-and-fly-kinda girl. Like I said I prefer non-fiction or biographies. Obviously, I also welcome a good laugh ( shocker… ).

You guys have amazing recs…so come at me: favorite book? x L

  1. My favorite book is Macbeth, I really get into the classics. I haven’t come across great biographies. I certainly need to get on top of your reading list! I love Skinny Bitch and Kelly Cutrone’s “Things Your Mother Never Taught You”…is awesome. 🙂

  2. My favourite ever autobiography was Billie Piper’s (Growing Pains)
But Stephen Fry’s are so great as well. He has two (Moab is my Washpot, and The Fry Chronicles) and both are really excellent reads!

I hope you can pick them up! 🙂

  3. You’re totally right – reading is a great escape! Gone Girl is definitely a great book. I highly recommend reading any Danielle Steel novels (Her most recent one is called Power Play) – I like all of her books, but I believe her earlier works are better than the newer ones.

  4. I hate to say it but I am a trashy autobiography reader, take Brani Ganvilles Drinking and Tweeting, total trash but incredibly insightful book. I am vacationing in Phuket right now and running through books on my kindle. I am loving Corey Feldmans book, its dark but a great read! Lots of Love C

  5. I couldn’t agree more with Hanna! Bossypants is a riot!

I have a major guilty pleasure for “chick lit” The Devil Wears Prada, Bridget Jones Diary, etc. my book collection is a bit out of control

  6. Omg, I LOVED Gone Girl!

I read Dark Places after and whilst it wasn’t quiiite as good, it was still amazing.

I don’t really know what to recommend for you if you’re more of a non-fiction, I read an amazing book called Phantoms in the Brain which is all about the neuropsychology of brain damage and amputees (niche subject I know).

Otherwise, my favourite books are The Great Gatsby, The Fault In Our Stars (everyone should read this book) and the short stories of Tessa Hadley xxx

  7. (Sorry if this is a double comment, I just tried and it didn’t work, for some reason!)

I absolutely LOVED Gone Girl! I made everyone around me read it so I could talk about it!

If you like non-fic, I’d recommend an amazing book called Phantoms in the Brain which is about the neuropsychology of strange phenomena in people with brain damage or who have had amputations. It’s a bit niche but so cool!

Otherwise, Dark Places by Gillian Flynn is good as well! If you want something a bit different, I’d recommend The Fault in Our Stars, it’s just too too too good! xxx

  8. Is Everyone Hanging out Without Me, and other concerns by Mindy Kaling.

    The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt

The first one is laugh out loud funny and also very insightful.
Not yet through The Goldfinch but it won a Pulitzer prize for a reason. Donna Tartt’s writing is the best thing I’ve read in a long time.

  9. Sloane Crosley is my favorite author, check her out! Her short stories are so funny and ring true for 20 and early 30somethings. happy reading 🙂

  10. Oh how I find so much delight in your mini delites. 🙂
My favorite book is Thirteen Reasons. It’s about a guy who receives 13 tapes from a girl who recently committed suicide. Each tape is a person who was a reason for her suicide.
It is not as morbid as it seems. It was really life changing for me and opened my eyes to a lot of my surroundings.
    xx, Jasmine

  11. Anne Sexton is a really interesting read. She taped her therapy sessions so it makes for an in depth look at what was going on in her life.
Also for a good laugh– any of David Sedaris’ books are AMAZING. Like, laugh out loud amazing. My favorite is Me Talk Pretty One Day, but any of his books are a great read.

  12. Girls in White Dresses by Jennifer Close is one of my favorite books about women, friendships, and navigating the twenties/thirties. I’ve read it twice in six months… it’s THAT good!

  13. Uganda be kidding me, Chelsea handler. Is everyone hanging out without me, mindy khaling. (Double recommend) bossy pants, tina fey. Four agreements, don Miguel ruiz.

  14. I liked Brandi Glanville’s first book, Drinking and Dating. Portia de Rossi’s book was also really interesting (about living with an eating disorder), and I’m also a sucker for Steven Tyler/Aerosmith and every word of Walk This Way was an OMG moment.

    1. I loved Brandi’s book!! I also liked Portia’s book even though it was sad : (. Thanks for the rec on ‘Walk This Way.’ xx.

  15. Alida Nugent’s book “Dont worry, it gets worse” Is the most hilariously true piece of writing ever. Along with her blog The Frenemy. Love her. Also David Sedaris has extremely funny autobiographies and short stories. Also! A Girl Named Zippy is one of my favorite books of all time and happens to be an autobiography.

  16. Devil in the White City,: Alhttp://www.amazon.com/The-Devil-White-City-Madness/dp/0375725601.
NF account of the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, its architects, the inventions that were introduced during it (iced tea, ice cream, electricity as a viable energy source for the masses, not just the rich)and how it helped give rise to America’s first serial killer.
    All true.
    So good!!
BTW-thanks for turning your readers on to Suja. Or at least me. I LOVE it and it makes me feel so healthy. I even cut a sinus infection short with it one day.

  18. Love reading, loved your book, loved Gone Girl, that chick is cra-zay! You might like “Is everyone hanging out without me” by Mindy Kaling, she is funny & interesting. annnd btw I just ordered that same blondie shirt a few days ago, it looks so cute on you! xo~ jan

  19. The Opportunist, Dirty Red & The Thief (series and I’ve only read the first two but LOVED them) by Tarryn Fisher and The Innocents by Francesca Segal.

  20. Your Voice In My Head by Emma Forrest…which I’m guessing if you love memories I’m sure you’ve read. Heartbreaking but so absolutely beautiful…one of the most well written and wonderful books I have ever got the privilege to read.

  21. Just finished The Empty Chair by Bruce Wagner. Amazing book. Focuses on his interviews, with two subjects, both seemingly so separated in this world but are really rather connected. He interviewed the subjects for days on end, he really begins to know their pain and joys. And when I finished. I was actually SPEECHLESS.

  22. I’m with ya girl, I like non fiction and bios too. I like real stuff, it’s hard for me to escape into imaginary world, not that there’s anything wrong with that:) I just finished Outliers which was really interesting and just started Blink by the same author, Malcolm Gladwell.

  23. What Remains by Carole Radziwill (RHONY) is a MUST and Girls in White Dresses!! Any of Babe walkers books are a quick, funny and easy read as well as any of Emily Giffin’s books.

  24. If you haven’t read “Are You There Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea” by Chelsea Handler, you’re seriously missing out. I died laughing on every page.

  25. I’ve recently become OBSESSED with autobiographies! Two that I’m totally crazy about are “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed (turning into a movie this year) and “The House in the Sky” by Amanda Lindhout. “Wild” is a story about a twenty something women who’s life is in shambles and decides to hike the PCT on her own. It’s so well written you’ll feel like you’re there! “The House in the Sky” is about a journalist that gets abducted in Somalia for over a year. It is a major dose of reality and super informative. Happy reading!

  26. Have you read “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed? It’s so, so inspiring.

Also, I never realized how much I need flamingo glasses until I read this post!

  27. I may be late to the game, but my favorite book is probably Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Such a magical and fun book. I plan on rereading it sometime soon 🙂
