Healthy, Shiny Hair

Hannah Andrusky talks how to have healthy hair with health and fitness blogger, Lauryn Evarts

Let me introduce you to my amazing hair God, Hannah Andrusky. When it comes to hair, she is literally a guru. Every time I leave her spinning chair I automatically feel refreshed. I spoke with her recently on how to achieve thick, shiny, healthy hair- here are all the juicy deets:

+ What’s a natural hair remedy that makes your hair shine?

Moroccan Oil [ the light brand ]. The regular kind is too heavy. Use it only the ends of the hair. For a cheaper alternative, try coconut oil. It makes the hair smell good and works really well.

+ Supplement to strengthen hair?

Bio Tin; you can buy it Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s. You want 3,000 mcg. a day. This can be taken on top of a hair and nail vitamin. Omega-3 vitamins are helpful too.

+ Let’s talk jello:

Gelatin or any kind of gummy is fantastic for your hair and nails because it helps to strengthen & grow them. You can do a protein treatment with Knox Gelatin. Use warm water, Knox Gelatin, leave it in your hair for 30 minutes, rinse, & then add a leave in conditioner. Too much protein will cause breakage. You can do the treatment once a month, or every two weeks.

+ Healthy tip for people that color their hair?

For summer, spray a UV protectant on your hair for sunscreen. We always forget to sunscreen our hair. Your hair needs protectant, just like skin. [ Lauryn’s hair sunscreen pick can be found here ].

What healthy foods you eat to strenghten you hair?

Iron in spinach is fantastic. Lots of protein will make your hair grow. I can tell a vegetarian a mile away by their hair. If you’re not getting proper nutrients your hair will suffer. Under nourished vegetarians will have fine, translucent hair. If you’re a vegetarian make sure you’re eating a lot of beans, tofu, edamame, etc.

Any drinks that promote healthy hair?

Fresh veggie juicing you’ll see in your skin and hair.

+ Want: natural beach waves…how do I achieve this naturally?

Scramble egg whites and sugar together to scrunch your hair for beachy waves.

+ Hottest hair style for Summer 2012?

High, thick bun and slicked back ponytail.

+ Best hair product from the grocery store?

If you’re strapped for cash or pinched for time, use Pantene Pro-V. It coats the hair with detergents, so it creates the optical illusion that your hair feels good. I like to go a cheap shampoo once a month, because it has detergents in it that will strip any build-up or natural oils.

+ Best product to invest in?

Kérastase’s shampoos and conditions. I like the green moisturizing one best.

+ How often should you shampoo your hair?

Decades ago they used to wash their hair once a month. They had lush, long beautiful hair because of this. Get away from daily shampoos. Use a dry shampoo if you’re working out. I would recommend shampooing every three days a week.

+ Best hair advice:

Less is more, less product, less styling, less fussing…

Now this is personal, so you of course do not have to answer! What is your height and weight and average daily Caloric intake? Blessings!

    1. Hey babe! My hairstylist does color with foils and then washes it. After that she tones it. Then washes it again. She calls my color her ‘secret sauce.’ If you’re in San Diego I can send you her contact info. I don’t have a daily caloric intake. I eat clean, drink lots of water, and & watch my carbs. Counting calories can be too obsessive for me! Hope that helps : ). XO.
