Check out Taylor Covington’s handbag line & prepare to drool.

Like, all over the the place, wishing/hoping/wanting-kinda drool.

They’re that good.

Supa, supa cute.

And welpers, so is Taylor. I loved interviewing this handbag babe because she really opened up & was super specific with her answers ( which I LOVE! ). I mean, I hate broad ( like, don’t be so secretive- share the freaking goods ) answers- I want the nitty gritty deets!

So ya go, lovas— enjoy her sweet ass interview ( & her one of a kind handbags!! ):

+ Introduce yourself:

Taylor Covington: I’m an American handbag designer now living ( & loving life ) in beautiful Cape Town, South Africa. My parents retired here a couple years ago & when I came to visit for the holidays I loved it so much that I called my boss in Texas & told him I wasn’t coming back!

I honestly think Cape Town is one of the most stunning places in the world. I’m surrounded by white beaches, green mountains, exotic plants/animals, & some of the most wonderful, spirited people I’ve ever come across.

I’m definitely one of those adventurous, outdoorsy types & when I lived in Dallas I often felt trapped by city-life & the restricted schedule of a 9 to 5 job. Don’t get me wrong, I love Dallas ( & the beautiful warm-hearted Texans! ), I just needed an escape & Cape Town was the answer. Moving to a city I hardly knew was like a breath of fresh air & I think the free-spirited, untouched, slightly rebellious emotions I experienced show through in my designs.

+ Tell us all about your amazing handbag line?! I want, I want!

TC: The Savage Collection includes totes, satchels, clutches, & hobos made from sustainably sourced springbok & calf hide. My goal was to keep the designs fairly simple & let the natural hides speak for themselves. I used Grade A Springbok & the softest calf leather I could get my hands on.

Because the skins are natural and every animal is different, each bag takes on a personality of its own. Some are fluffier, some have more distinct and colorful stripes. I can’t promise that the bag you receive will look exactly like the bag in the product shot, but it’s cool to think that your bag is unique & truly one of a kind.

+ Quick skinny trick?

TC: I’ve tried diets and they never work in the long-run. The trick is to stick to a healthy eating/exercise plan that you can easily maintain. I usually have scrambles or granola with flaxseed in the morning, quinoa or a colorful salad for lunch, & then fish with veg or some other protein in the evening. I snack on almonds throughout the day or pick at fruit.

And occasionally I’ll steal a fry ( or five ) from my boyfriend. It’s okay to cheat every now & then, as long as you don’t scoff his double cheeseburger while you’re at it ; ). I share pizzas with my girlfriends & often end the night with a piece of chocolate. If you’re working out regularly, it won’t kill you. Moderation is key!

+ If you had to do a bikini shoot in a week, how would you prepare?

TC: Watch re-runs of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on the treadmill & cry… No I’m kidding ;)! Kinda.

I’d try to avoid empty carbs & alcohol- two of the worst bloat causing demons. And maybe substitute one meal a day with a healthy detox juice. My favorite combo is carrot, beetroot, apple, & ginger. I’d also take some Pilates classes & lift light weights to tone up before the big day.

+ Weekly workout schedule?

TC: I go to gym four to five days a week & try to alternate between body toning/stretch classes. For example, Monday I’ll do crossfit, Tuesday yoga, Wednesday Callenetics, Thursday Pilates, & so forth. I aim to gym in the early morning so that the rest of my day is open for possibilities. Cape Town is heaven when it comes to outdoorsy activities; it’s almost a sin to stay indoors. I love to take my dog on hikes up Table Mountain, join a friend for a chilled walk along the Sea Point Promenade, or hit Camps Bay for a quick game of beach volleyball.

+ Favorite go-to healthy food?

TC: Quinoa is my personal fave! It’s full of protein & fiber and also so versatile. I toss it up with whatever’s left my fridge. You can go for a Mexican theme with avo, peppers, corn, & a little lime dressing…or Mediterranean with some sun-dried tomatoes, chickpeas, feta, & pesto. The options are endless really.

+ Motivation to stay in shape?

TC: I’m in such a better mood when I feel fit and healthy. Eating well & exercising regularly doesn’t have to be a chore, it should be a way of life. Once you cut out the ‘bad stuff’ for two plus weeks, you’ll see how much energy you have & your cravings for sweet/salty foods will start to subside.

Sure it’s fine to have the occasional treat, but you’ll be so happy with your body’s improvement, you’ll want to stay on track towards being the best ‘you.’

+ Favie beauty product?

TC: I love my Bobbi Brown foundation stick! I throw it my bag & reapply throughout the day. I’m not a makeup artist so I’m not sure if this is necessarily a good thing, but I buy it a shade darker than my actual skin tone & dab it on the top of my forehead, under my cheekbones, chin, & jawline.

It’s an easy way to contour when you can’t travel with your entire makeup bag & there’s no messy sponges/liquid spillage involved. I’m a handbag designer, so my bag has to look somewhat decent at all times :P.

+ Natural beauty remedy?

TC: My mom’s homeopathist introduced us to grapeseed oil. It does wonders for dry skin. Pour a little in your bath or mix it up with your daily body moisturizer & you’ll see a difference almost immediately.

Cocktail of choice?

TC: I’m more of a wino, but I love a Kir Royale! Champagne with crème de cassis. Very French, very fabulous…!

+ Quick, easy recipe:

TC: Okay, okay, so I copied and pasted this off Pinterest, but it’s so easy & yum! I tend to avoid meat for various reasons so this is an easy veg option. I make it with my boyfriend every couple weeks ( a carnivore though & through ) & even he can’t get enough of it:

>> Zucchini Fritters with Tzatziki

* Serves two / yields six

2 cups zucchini, coarsely grated

1/2 cup potato, coarsely grated

Kosher salt

A pinch of flour

1 egg

1 tablespoon chives, chopped

1 tablespoon mint, chopped

The zest of one lemon

1/4 cup white onion, diced

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

>> Tzatziki:

1 cup Greek yogurt

2 tablespoon red onion, finely chopped

1 tablespoon mint, chopped

Kosher salt

Squeeze of lemon juice

+ Directions: Place the grated zucchini & potato in a colander. Spread the veggies out to allow for maximum surface area exposure & sprinkle all over with Kosher salt. Let sit for at least thirty minutes to drain. Meanwhile, make the tzatziki: stir together yogurt, onion, mint, Kosher salt, & lemon juice. Taste, & then add more salt if necessary. Chill until ready to use.

After the thirty minutes, squeeze veggies out & wrap in paper towels. Squeeze again. Note: the veggies will not drain out enough liquid on their own in the collander, so squeezing them with a paper towel is a critical step to mopping up that moisture. Open up the paper towel & spread out the veggies. Sprinkle with a pinch of flour to soak up leftover moisture.

In a bowl, whisk together egg, herbs, & lemon zest. Add salt & pepper to taste. Add onion & grated zucchini-potato mixture. Stir well.

Then preheat over to 200˚F. Place a foil-lined cookie sheet in the oven. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Melt one tablespoon of butter. When foam subsides, drop a spoonful of your fritter batter in. Gently pat with a spatula to flatten out the fritters, which will help make them crispy.

Cook about three fritters at a time until golden brown on each side. Place fritters in the oven while you make additional pancakes. Serve as soon as possible with tzatziki on the side. Enjoy!

  1. “Eating well & exercising regularly doesn’t have to be a chore” – Love that, so true. Also good to know about the grape seed oil, I had no idea it was good for skin.

Taylor you are gorgeous! It was fun to learn more about you.

  2. Hi, thanks for sharing this lovely blog. The recipe seems to be delicious. Going to give it a try. Awaiting for more recipes like this.

  3. I’m not usually a fan of using real animal fur or hair for fashion but I think Taylor’s plan to make use of the springbok hides, which are so readily available anyway, is genius. I love that she’s helping the local community too. I went to Cape Town last year and thought it was just the most magnificent place.

Thanks for the profile…I can’t wait to try these delicious looking fritters 🙂
