Goji Berries: A True Superfood

Can you guys believe that we’ve never discussed goji berries on The Skinny Confidential? It’s actually shocking.

Since interviewing Kenzie Burke on The Skinny Confidential HIM & HER Show where we talk all about food combining, intermittent fasting & wellness, I’ve become a really big fan of fruit in the morning. I think it’s an easy way to get your digestive system going and actually use all the energy & nutrients in the fruit.

So, now that I’m having a lot of fruit in the morning, I get super excited about sexing up my fruit.  Yes, you read that right…sexing up my fruit. It’s just nice to make it special & not boring.

Some of my favorite things to add to a big bowl of fruit are inulin, cacao nibs, coconut flakes, hemp seeds, Hawaiian spirulina ( more here ), black sesame seeds, flax seeds, & chia seeds.

But there’s another addition that’s been making a big time appearance.

Goji berries.

Never heard of a goji berry? Let me introduce you. It’s a tiny, chewy berry that’s full of antioxidants & Vitamin C, iron, fiber ( we love fiber- if you want to learn more check out the podcast episode with Tanya Zuckerbrot of The F Factor ), zinc, selenium, copper, & Vitamin A.

Fun fact: goji berries are also known as a wolfberry. They taste a little tart, slightly sour actually. Many people say they kinda taste like a cranberry and they’re packed with benefits, which we’ll get to.

Goji berries were used in ancient Chinese medicine to help with liver & kidney problems, skin issues, the immune system, the digestive tract & eyes.

As I said, I like to enjoy them on a big bowl of fruit, in oatmeal, sprinkled on top of a smoothie, & alone. I even lied to Michael & said they were fruit snacks. They were in little bowls all around the house mixed with nuts and I think he actually thought they were fruit snacks.

The Benefits of Goji Berries: { via }

♡ protects the eyes with high levels of antioxidants.

♡ high levels of Vitamins A & C support a healthy immune system.

♡ may help enhance the effects of cancer treatment & slow tumor growth.

♡ contain beta-carotene which is so good for the skin & known to reduce skin irritations, manage effects of the sun, & manage aging.

♡ stabilizes blood sugar.

♡ improves depression, anxiety & sleep.

♡ has been used to treat liver disease.

Make sure your goji berries are organic ( I get mine from Amazon ). I like to wash them in warm water before I use them, but you can even steep them in some hot water and drink it as a tea.

Be sure to always ask your doctor before adding something new to your diet. There are certain medications that goji berries don’t mix with like blood thinners, blood pressure & diabetes medication. Always do your own research & talk to your doctor.

So goji berry it up. Sex up your fruit, sex up your oatmeal, sex up your smoothie- make it fun. These are organized nicely in my RiOrganized pantry in one Ria’s favorite containers.

If you’re interested in organizing your home you have to check out Ria’s posts on how to get started organizing your home, setting up a smoothie cupboard, & skin care organization.

There’s my little tippity tip of the day. Hope you guys are all safe.
