You know I love business. It gets me off, it gets me going, it gets me horny, really. It’s one of my main passions. Sophia Amoruso, the creator of Nasty Gal & the Girlboss community, knows business all too well.
She first inspired me when she came out with her book #GIRLBOSS. Every girl in the world read that book & we were all inspired. Sophia totally spoke my language & she made it very clear in this book, that the straight & narrow path is not the only path to success.
If you haven’t read her book yet, it’s a total must-read. Her story is captivating, interesting, & as I said already, INSPIRING. Amazon says:
“Amoruso spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and scrounging in dumpsters for leftover bagels. By age twenty-two she had dropped out of school, and was broke, directionless, and checking IDs in the lobby of an art school—a job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was in that lobby that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay.
Flash forward to today, and she’s the founder of Nasty Gal and the founder and CEO of Girlboss. Sophia was never a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for other girls like her: outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is windy as all hell and lined with naysayers.
#GIRLBOSS proves that being successful isn’t about where you went to college or how popular you were in high school. It’s about trusting your instincts and following your gut; knowing which rules to follow and which to break; when to button up and when to let your freak flag fly.”
I feel like she paved the way for a lot of young women to be a fucking boss. You can imagine how thrilled I was we decided to do a podcast swap. Sophia came on The Skinny Confidential HIM & HER podcast & I went on Girlboss Radio.
In Sophia’s episode she shares her journey as a serial entrepreneur, how to deal with setbacks, & persevere. On Girlboss Radio I’m talking about building TSC into a book, products & podcast, creating an amazing community, & managing a team. Plus, how one team member REALLY caught my attention & got the hire ASAP. These are both episodes you should really listen to if you’re a girlboss or a hustler yourself.
Anyway, here are 5 takeaways that really spoke to me.
5 Takeaways From Sophia Amoruso:
♡ “The only difference between the people who are doing what you want to be doing & you is that they’re doing it.”
♡ “I just followed my nose; if something didn’t sell or the auction didn’t go very high, I just wouldn’t buy things like that again. & then, the things that worked, I’d go find more of those things. I watched my competitors. I saw what was selling for them, what people were really duking it out over, what auction prices were going really high. & then I’d go find those things. “
♡ “Life is a marathon, not a race. So, I think when you’re young, you just want everything now, & that can pile up, & you can’t sort through all of those things. If you’re lucky enough, it can be a blessing & a curse to have a lot happen in your life at once, & it doesn’t all have to happen at the same time. So, I think having a certain amount of pacing would have been nice; just to have maybe a better plan.”
♡ “I want Girlboss to become the largest community of women online & offline that are helping each other, both professionally & personally, where they feel like they can bring their whole selves. There’s a really big international opportunity, too, because even though there’s so much work to do here in the States with women, or for women, as women… in other countries, we’re spoiled in comparison. “
♡ “There’s something out there for you, & sometimes you might have to take a step back to make a leap forward.”
So there you have it. This post is for the movers & the shakes, the ones who without a doubt wanna be the best damn version of themselves. I hope this inspires you to go DO, EXECUTE, & take ACTION. Be sure to stalk Sophia’s book here.

I looooooooved her episode on your podcast! It was the one that triggered a major binge on the pod because I NEED (NEED, NEED, NEED!!!) to listen to all of your episodes.
“The only difference between the people who are doing what you want to be doing & you is that they’re doing it.” is my absolute favourite. I have a tonne of quotes written down in the notes section of my phone but that one has made it to my cork board (which is a pretty big deal).
LOVE.
Now I just need to go visit her podcast and listen to your episode!
