Dermaplaning: Everything You Need To Know

shave your face skincare smooth skin tutorial dermaplane at home by tscAlright guys, today we’re gonna talk about dermaplaning. This is obviously one of my favorite subjects. You know I’m a huuuuge advocate of shaving my face.

It’s not just about getting rid of the little hairs all over your face, it’s about the way your makeup lays, how your skin care gets absorbed into your skin & the way your skin glows.

You can always shave your face, obviously… but, dermaplaning is gonna give you a little bit of a closer shave, and it’s done by a professional.

I definitely wanted to report to you guys on this because I feel like a lot of you have asked me questions about shaving your face and AS ALWAYS I want you guys to know all your options.

Let’s back up… what is dermaplaning?

“Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation procedure. It requires the use of a sterile, surgical scalpel to gently “shave” the skin’s surface, removing the top-most layer of dead skin along with fine, vellus hair (aka peach fuzz).” – source

I became addicted to dermaplaning when I started getting a double brow tint from Browtique- shout out to Lindsay ( @pluckandpout ). Seriously, she’s the best in San Diego. She told me about dermaplaning years ago and showed me all the benefits of making sure my face was nice & shaved.

I feel like my skin is tighter & my pores are smaller. If you don’t have time for dermaplaning you can always shave your face at home. I do it all the time.

Shaving and dermaplaning are kinda the same thing except dermaplaning is with a surgical grade razor SO YOU DEF should see a professional for this.

I’m not a fan of waxing the face. I’ve noticed that when I wax my face it brings out my hyperpigmentation. So stay away from waxing the face- especially if you have a brown mustache like me. I was waxing my brow & mustache and noticed it was getting darker & darker. I swear it was from the wax.

For those of you who haven’t ever shaved your face, it really is life changing. Here are 3 reasons you’ll be obsessed:

♡ The way it makes your makeup lay on the skin perfectly.

♡ It allows your skin care products to absorb better into your skin.

♡It keeps your face tight. It’s a great way to exfoliate and taking that layer of hair off the skin almost makes you look less puffy.

I like to have my entire face done. Everything but the eyebrows please!

BEWARE: don’t do this yourself- I would definitely hire a professional. Do your research, as always, and make sure you know who you’re going to. Maybe ask your favorite brow lady if she does it or can recommend someone.

Some more important things to note:

Pre-dermaplaning: make sure you don’t have tons of pimples or breakouts and are not on your period. It will really irritate the skin. Try to go when you have the clearest skin you can have. I like to go when my period is over, if possible. Make sure your face is cleansed, you have no makeup on, & arrive wearing a hat. You’ll have no SPF on so you’ll want to protect yourself.

During: you can expect to lay there for about 20 minutes. It doesn’t hurt- I actually think it feels good. All my nerves are shot from jaw surgery so I feel like it really wakes up my nerves.

Post-dermaplaning: when they’re done, ask them to apply some sunscreen. Your face will be exfoliated, which we love, but there will be nothing on it & you might be extra sensitive to the sun.

Now, let’s talk about the elephant in the room, k?

Hair growing back thicker & darker. I can only talk on my experience & my journey, but I’ve been doing this FOREVER. Since I was 19, if we’re getting specific. Dermaplaning & shaving my face has never made my hair grow back thicker or darker.

If anyone has had this experience I would love to hear about it. But it’s never happened to me.

You can get dermaplaning done about once a month, but I shave my face myself once a week. Unfortunately, I have mustache hair that Michael likes to point out on the reg. It’s something I have to hear about all the time so I’d rather just shave it.

I’m not saying you need to shave your face to be pretty, I’m just saying that…. for me…. I love all the benefits so it’s very much worth it.

Different areas cost different prices. This is also why I like to shave my face at home- dermaplaning can get pricey. The place I go to is around $50 but a place around you might be more or less. Just do your research and make sure you know who you’re going to.

If all else fails, grab a tinkle and go nuts.

  1. Have you ever had any issue with getting razor burn or tiny little red breakouts after shaving your face? I’ve been doing mine for a while now and just experienced tiny little break outs after the last two times:(
