DID I MENTION THAT WHEN I WAS IN NEW YORK I MET BETHENNY FRANKEL?
She’s AMAZING.
Exactly how you would imagine but cooler.
And damnnnnnn she’s business savvy.
A group of bloggers were able to pick her brain for a couple hours on her booming business ( Skinnygirl ), Housewives ( she loves Yolanda- but who doesn’t ), & her entrepreneurial journey, while we taste tested her new skinny cocktails.
Between Skinnygirl basil tangerine shots ( as good as they sound ) she asked if we had questions.
Uh, duh.
I had 4 million but I started with one:
WHAT’S YOUR ADVICE FOR WOMEN WHO ARE ENTREPRENEURS?
AND YOU GUYS.
Her answer was SOOO unreal that I had to share it on TSC.
It was simple, to the point, & RAW. She said:
“BE LIKE MICHAEL PHELPS. STAY IN YOUR OWN LANE. KEEP SWIMMING FORWARD & DON’T WORRY ABOUT WHAT EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING. DON’T LOOK OVER AT OTHER LANES. JUST KEEP SWIMMING.”
Ummmmm. If that’s not badass LIFE advice I don’t know what is? For example, it’s so, so easy to get on Instagram & before you know it you’ve compared yourself to your friend’s cousin’s, sister who’s a supermodel in Milan, dating Bradley Cooper, & just inherited 80 mill.
I’VE BEEN THERE TOO.
As a blogger it’s hard not to compare yourself to other bloggers.
And well, it’s hard not to compare yourself in general. It’s human nature.
Maybe you’re a working mother who compares yourself to other moms who don’t work, maybe you’re a teenager who compares your lifestyle to a celebrity’s, or maybe you find yourself constantly comparing yourself to, well, EVERYONE.
Point: DON’T COMPARE YOUR BEGINNING TO SOMEONE’S MIDDLE.
Comparing yourself to others gets you nowhere if you really think about it. It takes your eye off your prize, your goals, your dreams.
Really though, it’s pointless & really doesn’t get anyone anywhere.
Listen to Bethenny!! That woman gets it. She’s created an insane empire— she’s also witty, savvy, cool, smart, successful, a fantastic mother, & an inspiration.
Anyway, I cannot BELIEVE how much I got out of hearing her say those few sentences. My whole perspective changed that night. I am NOT going to look in other swim lanes. I’m going to focus on my own damn lane.
Thoughts?
Just call me Michael P, k?
x, Lauryn
P.S. more details on NYC trip/Bethenny to come…x
LOVE this! I used to be really bad about comparing myself to others and letting it drag myself down. I have been much better lately and it’s been great. Better to be positive than negative about everything.
Great post thanks for sharing!
Totally what I needed to hear right now! So thank you!!

Thanks for sharing!
These advices come just when needed as i’m a beginner in blogging.
Sound advice, not just for entrepreneurs but life in general!
Amazing advice! She totally kicks ass. The only person I compare myself to is past versions of me so I can admire how far I’ve come 😉
My cousin and I just launched our blog this week and this post is perfect! Thanks for sharing!
I lovee Bethenny, she’s always been one of my favorite Housewives! That’s such amazing advice, and you’re so right, it’s so so easy in today’s world to always be comparing yourself! Thanks so much for sharing:)

Ahh!! So amazing that you met Bethenny! I have been following her for years, and she is the absolute definition of GO GETTER and 120% into being herself! I look up to her so much. This advice is like therapy for our minds…now we just have to believe it. I do!! I’m going to stop doubting my content or caring when people unfollow me for posting something outside of the box!! XOXXO

Love love love this! Gave me goosebumps just reading it! So true though! I need to get this on a cute print and hang it up in my work space!
Comparing ourselves to others is a dangerous trap. We tend to glamorize the lives of others and imagine that things would be so much better if we “looked like her”, “had a fabulous job like him”, was popular like her”, etc. What we don’t realize is that EVERYONE has problems and struggles. That person you envy? Well, if you could magically trade places, you would probably want your own life back very quickly. As far as glamorizing celebrities goes, remember that the public only sees what that person’s marketing department wants you to see. They very carefully sell famous personalities as a brand through clever marketing, and there is a lot about those people that the public will never see. So it is pointless to compare your life with an imaginary image of how you think that person’s life must be. Just be the best you possible–that’s where you find happiness! 🙂
Just wanted to say thank you for sharing this! The advice was beyond perfect and I definitely needed to hear it right now. I have a horrible tendency to do exactly what you said, get on instagram and compare … And this was just perfect! Thank you again! And love your blog.
I can’t wait to watch the upcoming seasons of Housewives in NYC with Bethenny back in action! Love her!
I LOVE Bethenny! It’s so great to hear some of her advice and I really like the analogy of focusing on your own lane. Everyone is on a different path in life so it’s important to focus on your own and not compare yourself!
Absolutely love the Bethenny Frankel and the Michael Phelps quote. You are a bad ass Lauren! Love your blog and your style. 🙂
That is the best advice ever. Plus, I love how you mentioned how you shouldn’t ever compare yourself to others; absolutely perfect Lauryn! Comparison can become stressful, which can create struggle. When you’re struggling you’re going to compare yourself even more, it’s like a circle of bad habits!
Comparison is the thief of joy, unless you can use that negativity and channel it into good energy!
Love this!!!
I feel so enlightened!! We should remind ourselves of this everyday! Such a good post!
uh mazing advice! Super straight forward and puts your butt back down to earth. Sound advice for a newbie like myself. Thank you
I would DIE to meet her!
Great blog!
Love this and love Bethanny! Thanks for sharing! xx

Do you have an assistant? If not… girllll you should! 🙂
Thank you SO much for sharing. Bethenny’s success is inspiring! Also, I have been feeling like this too – you know, “the grass is always greener…” – but when I chat about it with my girlfriends, none of them fess up to feeling it too. It is so nice to hear that even you get a little envious of all the happenings on instagram. I uninstalled it because I was getting so jealous of complete strangers.
I love this. This advice really boosted my mood today. I have a tendency to get so bogged down by other people’s lives and success that this was a pleasant reminder that I just need to focus on me and do me 🙂 Thank you for this! xo
Wow, sage advice from Bethenny! It is sooo true, I compare often in school, work, relationships and just life. Will try to be more like Michael 😉
Just what I needed today!! Thank you!
I love that quote! It is so easy to get bogged down in what everyone else is doing and how they seem to be doing far better than you are, and it can affect your own progress. It is so hard to keep your eyes on your own work, but it is rewarding!
Such great advice! As a new blogger I am constantly comparing myself to those who have been blogging for years, and I tend to get discouraged. Staying in my own lane from how on 🙂
Great advice!! Love that you met Bethenny!!
Thanks!

Such great advice! I needed to hear this today. 🙂
Best advice ever! Thanks so much for sharing this now I need to go post this on my mirror to see every day
That is incredible advice! I am taking it to heart!
LOOOOOVE this advice and it is soooo sooooo true! What works for you may not work for others and vice versa. We all gotta listen and trust the voice within! Thanks for sharing!
This is so great! So true and so needed. Thanks for sharing. Need more awesome details! Oh and you had me at Skinnygirl basil tangerine shots!
GREAT advice when you say don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. Love it.
I love her already. Thanks for sharing your experience and the lessons you’ve learned. I wish she’ll have a tour in Asia soon. 🙂
Suuuch good advice! It’s so easy to get into the comparing game, and before you know it you’ve brought yourself down. Especially as bloggers, it’s so so easy to compare.
I’ll just print this awesome mantra and paste it on my wall, mmkay? Thanks!
First, so jealous you got to meet Bethenny – LOVE, LOVE, LOVE her! Second, on point advice for both business and life. I just started blogging again and found myself doing exactly that – comparing my beginning to other bloggers middles (TSC included :-). Nice to have a reminder to stay focused on our own shit and not worry about others.
Sooo happy I’ve just discovered your blog. Thanks for all the work you put into it. 🙂 I want to be you. A well rounded healthy beautiful girl. Which I can’t say about the countless cloning bloggers out there these days. Refreshing to read some content. Welcome to LA!
This post is so relevant to my life right now. I have been reflecting on my inability to focus and thrive off of what my God given lane was and always has been and still is. This inability to focus occurred when I was in high school. And it changed my life my path immensely. If I had earlier on taken the liberty of swimming in my own lane that was meant for me I would have been much further. If you want to read more on my personal journey visit http://www.raenewedlifestyle.wordpress.com.
Late to the party here.
As a total noob this is what the little voice in my heads keeps reminding me… but I love the way Bethenny worded it, it sticks. Our swimming pool is massive, there’s room for everyone and we all have something different to offer. It’s just a matter of honing in on it!
YES!!
will have to bookmark this one for inspiration. Thanks for posting
This is perfect advice!
