Today I want to discuss something very important.
BREATHING.
I’ve talked about breathwork a bit in the past & I just really think it’s one of the most powerful tools we can use for mind, body & spirit, as well as our nervous system & mental health. To be real, meditation & breathwork has been life-changing for me.
Recently we had Josh Trent on the HIM & HER podcast & I wanted to share 5 tips I learned from our conversation. You should know that I LOVED this episode & I think it can help a lot of people stay calm in stressful situations, teach their kids how to stay calm, & practice more mindfulness, which we all need in the world we’re living in.
A few of my team members found this episode great too!
If you haven’t heard of Josh Trent, let me introduce you. He is the Founder of Wellness Force Media, host of the Wellness Force Podcast & the creator of the BREATHE: Breath & Wellness Program. Josh has spent the past 18 years as a trainer, researcher, & facilitator discovering the physical & emotional intelligence for humans to thrive in our modern world.
On the podcast Josh discusses how breathing correctly can improve every aspect of our lives. We’re going to get into it below but be sure to listen to the full episode because Josh also tells us about his journey before he became a wellness expert, a very traumatic ayahuasca experience & how breathwork has changed his life. It’s a must listen for sure!
5 Things I Learned About Breathing From Josh Trent
♡ There are different types of breathing.
You might be thinking, well I breathe. I’ve been doing it since I was born, I do it all day long! Well a lot of us are mouth breathers aka vertical breathers. So there is vertical breathing, circular breathing & box breathing. Josh goes through it all in the podcast.
♡ Everything in life is parentally modeled.
We learn to breathe from our parents. Isn’t that wild?! Babies are born breathing through their nose & as life goes on we essentially forget we have a nose. For instance, let’s say you watch your parents fight, or be rushed & busy- they aren’t breathing. In fact, Josh even says that if you plug your baby’s nose ( lol, like only for a second ), they will choke & gasp for air. We are all born breathing ‘correctly.’ He recommends teaching our children to breathe ( through the belly ) & helping them learn with books.
♡ Mouth breathing is a coping mechanism.
When you breathe through your mouth, not your nose, you don’t feel your stress. It disconnects us from our body & that’s a self-soothing method for a lot of people. It allows us to abandon ourselves which feels safe, but that’s not the case.
♡ Fighting in front of kids isn’t always bad.
Ok ok, maybe this one isn’t actually about breath, but I loved Josh’s take on kids seeing their parents fight. Disagreements & arguments are part of life. There’s no need to pretend everything is perfect all the time. Conflict is a great way to get to know someone & all of our kids will go through it. There’s a way to fight in a mindful, loving way that teaches respectful discussion, compromise & resolution.
♡ If you have to choose between meditation & breathwork, choose breathwork.
Meditation is great. In fact, it’s been life-changing for me this past year. But it’s a practice, meaning that you do need to practice & find your own way of meditating that works for you. So Josh actually recommends choosing breathing consciously for just 3 minutes over meditation. The affect it can have on our brains & nervous system especially with all the fear in the world right now is VERY POWERFUL.
Those are just a few of the things I learned from our conversation with Josh on The Skinny Confidential HIM & HER show.
You guys are really going to love this episode. Josh’s story is very interesting- from his upbringing to the low & then the high points in his life. I mean, we get into mouth tape, ketamine, lung health & he teaches you how to do circular & box breathing.
