Kristin Cavallari’s Top Five Healthy Must-Haves

Kristin Cav is banging. 

But seriously though.

How does that B do it? 

She just had another baby ( that’s baby numero dos for anyone who doesn’t follow The Hills superstar ) and pretty much she’s killing it.

Personally I love her because she ‘gets it.’

Recently she was quoted on the E! Online as saying “I don’t eat any toxic chemicals and I try to eat organic as often as possible.”

YESSSSS. 

She’s also been quoted many times saying that she hates processed food & she “always reads ingredients & never counts calories.” 

Basically KC’s main diet tip? Just make sure you thoroughly check the ingreds.

DOUBLE YESSSSSS.

I mean…clearly she’s my sista from a different mista on this one.

I’m not a calorie counter ( yawn ) but I ALWAYS look at the ingredients ( der ).

These ingredients are the devil according to Kristin:

→ high fructose corn syrup ( EWWWW )

→ artificial sweeteners ( SICK!! Read why I hate fake sweeteners here )

→ sodium benzoate & potassium benzoate ( << in soda (( soda substitution here ))!! )

→ butylated hydroxyanisole ( also known as BHA )

→ sodium nitrates/nitrites

→ blue, green, red, & yellow artificial colors ( BLAH. THROW. NASTY! )

→ monosodium glutamate ( MSG )

→ sodium sulfite

→ potassium bromate

→ brominated vegetable oil 

Ok so WTF DOES Kristin eat?

Whelp, she eats clean. Duh.

She recently shared her top healthy tips via her app. I know, I know you’re dying to know what made the cut.

Let’s inspect, mmkay?

++ Kristin’s Favorites: 

♡ Raw Reserve: “I try to start every morning with these powered greens. I get the chocolate flavor so it doesn’t taste too bad. it has tons of vitamins and minerals. 

♡ Magnesium: “I take the supplement twice a day. Magnesium is a mineral that’s present in a relatively large amounts in the body. It’s fundamental to more than 300 chemical reactions that keep the working properly. It helps to provide a better sleep, fights off anxiety, relaxes the nervous system, loosens tight muscles, alkalizes the body, helps with acne, ease headaches, & reduces PMS difficulties.” 

♡ Omega 3 Fish Oil: “I put this in smoothies &/or oatmeal. It has a ton of health benefits like lowering elevated triglycerides levels ( more on that here ).”

♡ Aloe Juice: “I take a shot of this every night before bed to stay regular if ya know what I mean.”

♡ Chlorella: “I’ll add a scoop of Chlorella to smoothies as well. It’s a natural detoxification tool & helps to remove toxic metals & chemicals.

♡ Vega Protin: “this is a great plant based protein. I put it in smoothies and it doesn’t have a weird taste like most proteins.”

After doing my own research, it’s safe to say I’m taking a couple tipsies from Ms. Kristin Cav. 

My aloe juice is on my nightstand ready to rock ( make sure you buy the ‘Inner Fillet’ kind ). I’ve been super in to minerals lately so Magnesium is something I already take everyday. And my AM smoothie this week def had Omega 3 oil & Chlorella too inspired by KC. Also, I can’t wait to try cacao Raw Reserve ( with E3Live ) in a banana, date, cinnamon smoothie tomorrow AM : ). 

In regards to working out, Kristin says “I started working out when Jax was three weeks old. I’ve been working out four to five times a week for 30 to 45 minutes at home, doing tons of leg work like squats, lunges and lifting weights. I want to start Pilates again to focus on my core. I’ll probably get back into it in the next couple weeks.”

She gets the 30 minute workout concept too!! LOVE.

I think Kristin is a bomb-ass example of someone who knows what they’re talking about when it comes to a healthy lifestyle.

Jordan Younger from The Balanced Blonde ( formally known as The Blonde Vegan ) because fast Internet friends. It’s weird/rad when you’re a blogger & you immediately click with someone over the web— definitely a different way to make friends, right?! But seriously, Jordan’s charismatic, understanding ( I’ve been all over the place today while we were posting— lol ), kind, smart, & honest.

Recently she made MAJOR headlines ( think Prevention, Women’s Health, ABC News, Well + Good, & Hello Giggles ( which was shared by Zooey Deschanel )— NBD ) for her transition from vegan life to whelp, a balanced life. After years of being a vegan she decided her body needed something different. Hence her blog name change. As a blogger, I commend her honesty & vulernabilty. The Internet can be a cold, hard place when ya put yourself out there…at the same time, it can also be very supportive. I completely support her brave choice to sticking with what works for HER. She should not be bullied for her lifestyle change!!! To each its own ; ).

Everyone’s different. Do what works for you.

| Tell us all about no longer being a vegan. |

Jordan Younger: I went vegan for health reasons, and in the process I learned so much about the benefits of living a plant-based diet in all aspects of life. I learned a lot about how different foods affect my body, and I tried every type of vegan diet under the sun from 80/10/10 raw veganism to entirely plant-based to raw until 6pm to the protein-heavy and completely protein-devoid variations. About a year ago my body started telling me that veganism wasn’t cutting it anymore, but I ignored the signs my body was giving me. Eventually I lost my period, injured my ankle due to a B-12 deficiency, & started realizing that I had developed a serious problem because I started having serious fears about trying foods that were not vegan or 100% “clean.”

The psychological and physical struggles of my health obsession far outweighed the original health benefits I was experiencing. Eventually I accepted the harsh reality that I had developed orthorexia, a fear of eating food that wasn’t completely healthy. That’s not a way to live! Food should be nourishment, fuel and enjoyment. Not something to fear. So I decided to get help, and in the recovery process I have decided to ditch the “vegan” label in favor of a more balanced lifestyle.

It’s been a difficult process, but I am happier than I have been in a long time.

| Natural beauty remedy that you do? |

JY: Lots & lots of mud masks. I make my own “mud” from coconut oil ( benefits here ), avocado and honey. Let it set for 10-15 minutes. Boom– softest skin & gets rid of pesky irritation.

| What is your weekly workout schedule? |

JY: I practice yoga daily and I run three to five times per week. Exercise is a huge component in leading a healthy lifestyle. You can’t just eat healthy without exercising and expect to live a healthy life, and you can’t just exercise without eating well either. They are the yin and yang of health. My best advice when it comes to exercise is to find the type of exercise that you love so that you will be consistent with it. Our exercise is our play time, our me-time.

I teach yoga, practice yoga in a studio and have a home practice of the physical asana and meditation– yoga is basically my boyfriend. Find what ya love!

| What is your favorite go-to healthy food? |

JY: My go-to healthy food would absolutely be a green smoothie. Banana, blueberries, kale, almond milk, & a bit of almond butter ( <<< making this tomorrow ). Heaven on earth. And now that I am no longer vegan, I have been LOVING omelets loaded with veggies for breakfast. So delicious.

| Cocktail of choice? |

JY: Vodka soda with lime. My friends make fun of me because it’s the only drink I will ever order or even touch. I’m kind of a freak about the nasty additives that find their way into many cocktails out there. If I’m at an organic bar or restaurant, then I will let up a little bit.

| Favorite go-to healthy food? |

JY: My go-to healthy food would absolutely be a green smoothie. Banana, blueberries, kale, almond milk and a bit of almond butter. Heaven on earth. And now that I am no longer vegan, I have been LOVING omelets loaded with veggies for breakfast. So delicious.

| Can’t-live-without beauty product? |

JY: Moroccan Oil. My hair is addicted to it. And Donna Karan Cashmere Mist body lotion– I can’t leave the house if I haven’t put it on!

| When I wake up I… |

JY: Have a glass of warm water with lemon, write in my journal and meditate.

| WTF’s in your purse? |

JY: WTF isn’t in my purse? I always have about ten MAC lipsticks and lip glosses rolling around (light pink shades; sometimes red if I’m feeling wild), my wallet overflowing with juice bar punch cards, my Equinox and Moksha yoga membership cards, my journal, my reusable water bottle, a PB cookie flavored Larabar, & my sunglasses.

| Day of eating? |

JY: Breakfast is usually a green smoothie or a bowl of oatmeal with cinnamon, lunch is a big green salad with a piece of wild salmon, dinner is steamed or roasted veggies with a grain or legume. Snacks are fresh fruit, green juices, raw nuts or a Larabar or Kind bar. Lately I have been reincorporating eggs and even some free-range organic chicken.

| Quick, easy (healthy) recipe? |

JY: Baked sweet potato wedges with half an avocado: cut a sweet potato into cubes, add some cumin and a dash of salt/pepper, pop in the oven at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes. Slice 1/2 avocado into cubes. Toss together, and voila! Perfect snack or mini-meal.

An Ice Cube Facial: Seriously A Bomb-Ass Beauty Tippity Tip

Ok so, this might be my favorite secret model tip in the whole world: dunking your face in a bowl of ice water.

Back up though…I just finished reading I Didn’t Come Here To Make Friends: Confessions of a Reality Show Villain by Courtney Robertson— she’s a top model & was on The Bachelor, Ben’s season. Honestly I’m not a Bachelor/ette fan. I’ve never got in to the show. No offense to anyone who likes it ( because I know there’s a lotta die hard Bach lovers ) but it so cheese. Like, the girls are so damn dramatic…& bitchy/PMS-y. If I hear the phrase “the most dramatic season yet in Bachelor history” again, I might lose my mind.

BUT.

There are a lot of the girls that have been on the show, who are really rad. Remember this post on Michelle Money? She’s hilarious. I also love Emily Maynard ( doll ). Anddddd Courtney Robertson always stood out because of her feisty, no BS personality. Tenley is so cool too & one of the sweetest people I’ve ever met.

Ok, so we’re getting off track.

Point: I was reading Courtney’s juicy book & she reminded me a modeling tip that I used to do all the time but kinda forgot about— dunking my face in ice water.

Huh?

Ya. That’s right: ice.cold.water.in.the.morning.

I swear it works magic. Serious, serious magic. Plus it’s free.

Here’s what you do:

So instead of trying fancy-ass creams or complaining of puffy eyes, try this tip ( duration: 10-30 seconds, 3 times in the AM works best ). Models do this ALL the time before shoots because it de-puffs the eyes, eases redness, tightens the skin, fights wrinkles, & keeps them looking so fresh and so clean, clean. More here.

Also, anyone a Real Housewives fan? Whelp, the oh-so-fab-I-love-twenty-five-year-old-boys-cougar-minx, Sonia Morgan talks about this trick all the time. She says she HAS to do it every morning or she doesn’t look as fresh.

I have to agree. ESP if you’re hungover. Ice x water x your face= hangover cure for the face. The before & after is mind-blowing. After trying this, you literally wouldn’t want to leave the house before soaking your face in ice water.

Trust meeeee, you’ll be feeling bright eyed & bushy tailed immediately. Don’t have time to do this? Rub an ice cube all over your face while you’re brushing your teeth.

P.S. Lauren Conrad swears by “ice cube facials” too.
