Epsom Salt Spa Bath for Babes On a Budget

The Skinny Confidential talks epsom salt.

Ok so when I was in college I totally had spa, cucumber eye pad, champagne, outside shower by the ocean-kinda taste.

When I was stressed with finals, I wanted to go to the spa.

When three jobs were sucking up all my energy, I wanted to go to the spa.

When I worked my ass off in the school gym, I wanted to go to the spa.

I, unfortunately was a broke college student trying to figure out what the hell to do with my life.

The struggle was real.

So needless to say, THE SPA WAS A LAUGHABLE, REAL LOL-ER I WISH/DREAM during that time.

Let’s just say there were about 5 million other things that needed my financial attention…so #spalife wasn’t really in the cards.

But of course I had to find a way to make my damn spa dream come true.

My feet were always killing me ( bartending will do that! ) so I’d take a big bowl, pour hot water in it, & add lavender Epsom salt ( << especially in love with this brand— not sponsored, just realness ).

Enter epsom salt…according to this source “studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy the amazing health benefits. Magnesium plays a number of roles in the body including regulating the activity of over 325 enzymes, reducing inflammation, helping muscle and nerve function and helping to prevent artery hardening. Sulfates help improve the absorption of nutrients, flush toxins and help ease migraine headaches.”

In my case, college caused migraine headaches. Totally kidding.

But not really.

I’m OBSESSED with Epsom salt because A.) it’s inexpensive B.) it’s been well known for hundreds of years for it’s healing proprieties C.) it has health benefits to soothe the mind/body/soul & relaxes the nervous system ( << which I SOOOOO needed in college ), & D.) there’s a million other benefits…

Like: “curing skin problems, soothing back pain and aching limbs, easing muscle strain, healing cuts, treating cold and congestion, & drawing toxins from the body. One of the simplest ways to ease stress and stress-related problems is to soak in a tub full of hot water with a few cups of the salt. Some of the magical benefits of Epsom salt include: Stress drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline. When dissolved in warm water, Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin and replenishes the level of magnesium in the body. The magnesium helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. Research shows that magnesium also increases energy and stamina by encouraging the production of ATP ( adenosine triphosphate ), the energy packets made in the cells. Experts believe that bathing with Epsom salt at least three times a week helps you to look better, feel better and gain more energy. Magnesium ions also relax and reduce irritability by lowering the effects of adrenaline. They create a relaxed feeling, improve sleep and concentration, and help muscles and nerves to function properly” ( source ).

If you’re in college & you have a bath tub…well then aren’t you the lucky bitch.

I didn’t have a bathtub so I had to make some compromises, hence the feet soaking at ‘Lauryn’s At-Home Spa.’

Remember magnesium?? If you read above you can see HOW IMPORTANT IT IS!! Magnesium is sooo insane. Epsom salt replenishes the body with it. So it’s kind of a win/win. Read more here.

P.S. other budget friendly ways to use Epsom salts: fertilize house plants, clean bathroom tiles, remove foot odor, exfoliate dead skin ( << the best mixed with coconut oil! ), use it to prevent slugs, & helps clear build-up out of washing machines.

Ok so, other ways I created an at-home spa on a beer budget? Use tea lights, twinkle lights from Target, or incense for ambience. I also used ( & use ) oils like coconut oil, grapeseed oil, &/or almond oil to rub all over my bod. I’d make DIY masks out of bananas, tea, & oatmeal & paint my own nails ( << Sally Hansen has awesome tools ). Also my at-home treatments usually included cucumbers on my eyes, because a spa without eye cucumbers isn’t a real spa.

Lastly, I always facial steamed.

This sounds dirty, but it isn’t…

Facial steaming is “great for those with blackheads and for a cheap, deep clean! Deep cleaning with steam is an ancient method used across the world. It’s not only cheap but highly effective. It’s very easy to do to. All you need is a large bowl or basin/container, which you need to fill with one litre (2 pints) of boiling water. You then site before the bowl and cover your head with the bowl whilst taking in the steam. You do this for no more than 8 minutes. You can add two drops of lavender or tea tree oil to enhance the experience. You do not need to literally sit on top of the bowl to benefit from this method of deep cleaning so avoid making yourself sleepy and just relax and inhale” ( source ).

How do you spa it up on a budget? Would love to know?

Fashion Blogger Sophie Elkus

Lauryn Evarts, fitness blogger, health blogger, and diet blogger talks skinny tips and tricks with Sophie Elkus.

Sophie Elkus is such a cutie.

Sophie, Michael, & I had a ‘blogger blind date’ on Wednesday & she is absolutely adorbs. If you haven’t checked out her cute blog, add it to your to-do list ASAP- you’ll all love her! We got to know each other over veggie juice at a charming, little cafe & it was so fun to connect with someone that shares my passion for blogging.

Anyway, enjoy her fun interview & happy Friday lovas!

+ Tell us about yourself:

Sophie Elkus: I’m twenty-one years old, a Pisces, and was born & raised in Los Angeles. I’m a student at USC majoring in public relations and marketing, but my real passion is fashion, beauty, & fitness! I write a blog called Angel Food Style that reflects my colorful and feminine style aesthetic. My sense of dress is sophisticated and always put together, but it definitely has a west coast, California vibe to it. Aside from style, I’m totally into fitness, healthy food, & my two little dogs.

+ Quick skinny tips or tricks?

SE: I think fitness experts will agree with my opinion that there really is no ‘quick’ route to gettingskinny – I think it’s so silly when I see girls go on crash diets & juice cleanses and expect to see quick results. If you’re off to a tropical vacation, you’re better off with a spray tan & well-fitted swim suit! It’s so much more productive to make fitness & healthy eating a regular part of your lifestyle- not a quick-fix.

That being said, there are definitely quick tips to incorporate into your lifestyle to keep your energy level up while feeling great. I’m a big believer in breakfast. I can’t focus on anything without it. I love a breakfast smoothie with blueberries, banana, coconut water, chia seeds, omegas, acai, cinnamon, & vanilla protein powder. Another tip is replacing anything you drink with your meals, like sodas or juice, with water. It reduces your sugar intake while keeping you hydrated! I also try not to eat too late at night to keep my digestion & sleep separate.

+ Weekly workout schedule?

SE: I’m a little obsessed with SoulCycle spin classes at the fault of my friends who introduced me to it. I go twice a week, & on the other days I take a barre class that combines pilates, ballet, & weight training. I see the best results with this mix of cardio & strength training. I usually work out four to five times a week, but if I feel like taking a day off, I’m totally fine with it. Sometimes you need to rest!

+ Favorite go-to healthy food:

SE: If I’m out to a restaurant with friends, I don’t worry about ordering the healthiest thing on the menu. I want to enjoy myself, & LA restaurants make mean sweet potato fries! I’m also obsessed with weekend brunch.

However, at home, I’m careful to eat cleanly, which balances out the indulgences. If I’m making my own food, I eat a lot of green vegetables, tofu, chicken, salmon, brown rice, & eggs. I cook with canola oil instead of butter & use almond milk instead of dairy milk in my recipes.

+ Cocktail of choice:

SE: Not a cocktail girl, but prosecco is light & sweet!

+ Can’t live without beauty product:

SE: Lame as it is, I could never choose just one. It would be a tie between mascara & bronzer. Both make a huge difference in making me appear rested & ready for the day. Everyone looks better with wide awake eyes & a some color on their cheeks!

Lauryn Evarts, fitness blogger, health blogger, and diet blogger talks skinny tips and tricks with Sophie Elkus.

+ Natural beauty remedy?

SE: It’s cliche, but eight hours of sleep a night makes the hugest difference in the smoothness & brightness of my skin. I like to make a natural sugar scrub with brown sugar and olive or almond oil. You can also add Vitamin E to it.

Pure aloe vera is another calming natural remedy that works well on irritated skin. Lastly, bath salts are so great for achy muscles after a hard workout. I remember my mom putting me in the bathtub with Epsom salts after my long ballet rehearsals.

+ When I wake up I…

SE: Usually head straight to work out! If I haven’t done it by noon, it probably isn’t going to happen. I like to wake up early & get my day started! I listen to music while I get ready, it puts me in a good mood.

+ Tell, tell…what’s in your purse?

SE: My wallet, car keys, business cards, NARS lipgloss in ‘Sweet Revenge’, hair ties, & a gold bracelet in case I need to dress up an outfit. I used to carry a small notebook for ideas/memos, but nowadays I usually just write everything down in my iPhone.

Lauryn Evarts, fitness blogger, health blogger, and diet blogger talks skinny tips and tricks with Sophie Elkus.

+ Naughty indulgence?

SE: Dark chocolate with sea salt. Just writing this is making me want some! I probably eat it several times a week, but in small amounts. I tell myself it has antioxidants! I’m also a huge cupcake, brownie, & chocolate chip cookie girl. And pancakes… I should probably stop this list right here!

+ Quick, easy, healthy recipe?

SE: I love pasta, but it can be so heavy on your stomach to digest. I like to make a brown rice pasta but with half the portion as vegetables and the other half as pasta, which is just as filling and twice as healthy. I love a good marinara sauce.

For a quick snack, almond butter is nutritious & sweet. You can spread it on anything – toast, crackers, or just eat it out of the jar ( guilty!!! ).

Clothing Designer Mary Simonsen Shares Skinny Tricks & Style Tips

Lauryn Evarts talks with clothing and handbag designer, Mary Simonsen.

Lauryn Evarts talks with clothing and handbag designer, Mary Simonsen.

Recently I interviewed fashionista/clothing designer, Mary Simonsen. Not only is she sweet & gorgeous, she’s also insanely talented ( ummm…her “Marilyn style” dress needs to get on my bod ASAP ). And when I discovered she maintains her rocking body from swimming, I’m totally inspired to hop in the pool ( at least I will when it’s warmer out!! ) & get my swim on.

Anyway this babe is killing it her amazing dress & handbag line. Her stuff is to die!

Check Mary out…

+ Hiiii. Tell us about yourself.

My name is Mary Simonsen. I am a local clothing designer for my own private label “Buttons & Minx” as well as the designer for the handbag collection “Rocio Martinez.” My first line, Buttons & Minx is a collection comprised of handmade one of a kind silk, silk-chiffon maxi dresses, & backless sequin tunics. My brand is known for creating simple silhouettes with current trends in fabrication such as color, texture, & design.

The “Marilyn style” dress is a staple piece in my collections. This simple & timeless silhouette is especially flattering to all body types; it can be worn in both casual and nighttime settings. The Marilyn dress is also versatile because it can be worn several different ways including basic halter top, front criss cross tied in the back, one shoulder halter, etc. All fabrications I use are of the highest quality as most of my silks are imported directly from Italy and India!

+ Quick skinny tips?

Drink a lot of water & take hot Epsom salt baths. It helps to detox your body & remove water weight/bloating.

Also try to get a workout of even just fifteen mins a day. Not only does this burn fat as you’re doing it but it allows you to metabolize the next few meals much quicker.

+ Weekly workout schedule?

I don’t really have a weekly schedule. I’m not really the type of person to schedule everything I do. My life can be hectic & the industry I’m in is very unpredictable. But I do like to get in a workout at least three to four times a week. I usually turn to swimming ( I was a competitive swimmer for over ten years ). If you have any injuries like I do, swimming is the least straining exercise on the body.

+ Favie go-to healthy food?

Avocado!! I eat it with a splash of low fat balsamic vinaigrette & a little pepper. Yum!

Also, I make a great protein shake with fresh blueberries ( great antioxidants ), raspberries, bananas ( great source of potassium, which most women are naturally deficient in ), oranges, & low-fat yogurt.

I also try to juice as much as possible. My fav: apples, carrots ( with the skin because that’s what holds the nutrients ), ginger ( a little bit goes a long way ) & last but certainly not least…BEETS! Beets are a super, super food.

They’re also a fantastic way to do a natural temp lip or check stain : ).

+ Motivation to stay in shape?

Good health & a woman has much more self-esteem if she feels her body is in shape & she looks good. Self-esteem is so important!

Lauryn Evarts talks with handbag and clothing designer Mary Simonsen about fashion and skinny tips.

+ World’s best beauty product?

MAC mascara- it’s called ‘Haute & Naughty Lash.’ It makes the eyes pop so it looks like you’re wearing false lashes. I’ve tried hundreds of mascaras & this one is by far my favorite.

+ Natural beauty remedy that you do?

I try to avoid using foundation as much as possible or anything that topically covers the face & clogs pores. I use to wear foundation everyday but after I found a great facialist I realized I needed to get over my fear of bare skin. My skin is more radiant & blemish free after banning foundation.

+ Top five fashion must-haves:

1.} Motorcycle boots

2.} An ASOS leather jacket

3.} A faux fur coat

4.} A handbag with a pop of color

5.} MAC’s red lipstick with an orange tint

+ Quick, easy, health recipe:

Homemade chicken, veggie soup. Use pre-made chicken broth or make your own from scratch. Add in chopped carrots, celery, sweet potatoes instead of regular, & any other veggies you like. Enjoy!
