Skin Care Tips: Let’s Talk About Peels!

Staci Christie & I have known each other for years and every.single.time. we see each other, I comment on her glowing skin.

She literally has the best complexion I’ve ever seen.

And naturally, her biggest skin care tip is to stay outta the sun!! She wears visors, hats, sunscreen, etc. all the time.

Smart lady!

Basically Staci’s the reason I’m always wearing a baseball cap. I don’t care if I look like a total dork running errands, at least my skin’s protected! Recently I went to see her for a ViPeel to take away any sun damage, pigment, freckles & it was a game changer. My face felt like a baby’s butt for months…cool right?

|| Introduce yourself ||

|| What’s your speciaity? ||

|| Best foods for glowing skin? ||

SC: Wild salmon is one of the best food sources for omega-3 fatty acids, which helps keep your skin supple & moisturized. Salmon also has selenium ( << P.S. remember I did a lil post on selenium? LOVE! ), a mineral that protects the skin from sun exposure. Tomatoes are the best source of the anti-aging antioxidant lycopene. Dark chocolate helps skin stay hydrated and protects skin from sun damage, and contrary to popular belief, chocolate does not cause acne. The best kind of chocolate has a high flavanol content and should be at least sixty percent cacao. Kiwis are loaded with Vitamin C & antioxidants, which keep skin firm and help prevent wrinkles.

|| Quick skin tips? ||

SC: Although drinking water isn’t a replacement for your moisturizer, staying hydrated is necessary for maintaining healthy skin functions, such as regenerating cells and improving circulation. The result? A more radiant complexion.

|| I’m so obsessed with my pink Clarisonic! How often can you use the tool? ||

|| Recommendations for women in their twenties & thirties? I love any preventative tips ; )! ||

If you haven’t already started taking care of your skin, there’s no better time than now. Prevention is the key for your twenties. If you smoke, stop now. Sun protection is imperative as well. Most skin damage is done before the age of twenty, but sun exposure thereafter only adds insult to injury. The skin begins to lose moisture as we progress through our thirties, and some moisturizing ingredients work better than others. Look for products rich in hyaluronic acid, which holds more than a hundred times its own weight in water. To polish your look, make sure your brows are groomed and filled in ( << more on brows here ).

|| Ok, so WTH is SPF so important? ||

SC: Repeated sun exposure accelerates the skin aging process and increases the risk of developing skin cancer, which affects over a million people in the United States every year. A 2013 study found that regular sunscreen use protects against photo-aging: the wrinkling, spotting and loss of elasticity caused by exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Those who use sunscreen daily are 24% less likely to show increased signs of
aging.

|| Your skin is incredible! What’s your AM/PM routine? ||

SC: I cleanse with Epicuren Herbal Cleanser in AM & PM. Then I use my favorite product: SkinMedica TNS Essential Serum is a unique, multi-faceted product designed to treat and maintain a healthy, youthful complexion. It contains an array of natural human growth factors and other compounds that help diminish the visible signs of aging, such as wrinkles, fine lines and uneven texture in the AM & PM.

Brooke Tigh had me at bunghole.

No really. I went to take her Studio Barre class & she had me laughing while I was in a happy baby ( AKA ‘spread eagle’ ) pose. She was just checking to make sure ‘our bungholes were facing the mirror.’ HA!

I was hooked to her sense of humor + her amazing class. Every Friday at noon you can find me tucking away with Brooke. She’s a real gem. Read on, lovaz. You’ll fall in love with her too!

+ Tell us about yourself.

Brooke Tigh: I’m graceful, strong, and coordinated-yet still somehow very accident prone.

I’m energetic, confident and silly-but when it’s time to wind down, I’ve been known to turn into a “womouch” ( part woman, part couch ). Even though I love to joke around, I CAN be serious and focused. It’s all about balance.

Teaching fitness and living a healthy, active lifestyle is my passion! A perfect day consists of: Studio Barre, yoga, lunch with friends ( & adult beverages ), massage, nap, dog park w/ my pup, more adult beverages, delicious dinner, dance party ( duh ), a nice sleep in my glorious cal king ‘cloud bed!’

+ Why is Studio Barre amazing?

BT: Studio Barre is so fantabulous ( yes that’s a word- cause I said so! ) because not only is it a kick ass workout that will literally change the shape of your body for the better…but it’s a place to come and be surrounded by glorious people & great energy. There’s something magical that happens when you walk into the doors of Studio Barre; you smile, you laugh, you bond with all the other ( mostly women ) ‘tucker’s.’ Everybody is so supportive of one another, there’s no cattiness or bitchy-ness like other boutique style studios sometimes have.

+ Favie Studio Barre move?

BT: Why, the ‘tuck’ of course! What is a ‘tuck’, you ask? It’s simple. Just squeeze your bootie & pull your belly button in to your spine. It’s like a little air hump. It tightens everything from your ass all the way up & goes through your entire core. It lengthens your low back, while strengthening your belly muscles. As we say, “keep calm and tuck on!”

I’m also a big fan of our ‘cardio snack’, which happens about halfway into class, gets your heart pumping, & helps you find your last push of energy to take it to the end of class.

+ Quick skinny tips?

BT: To slim down, cut out booze, refined sugar, & carbs. I know, it sounds freaking terrible. But you will see a change in like a week, I swear! Try & do this for two full weeks to see the most difference. Or if you can’t tone it, tan it! Get a spray tan & you may possibly look five pounds lighter!

Put on those stilettos, girl. The higher the better for long, lean, luxurious legs!!! Also, invest in Spanx. You will be amazed!

+ Weekly workout schedule?

BT: Right now, I’m on the books to teach three yoga classes & nine Studio Barre classes a week…& I usually sub a few classes on top of that.

Since my voice is pretty much the only thing that gets a workout while teaching, I like to kick my own ass in these ways:

- At least three Studio Barre classes…

- At least three yoga classes…

BT: I’m the worst at cardio! It has to be disguised for me in classes like Zumba, Cardio Dance, & Step. I usually go to Frog’s Gym in Encinitas. Also, I have a Labradoodle named Piper who has tons of energy, so lots of walks with her count as part of my routine!

+ Favorite go-to healthy food?

BT: I try to always have a Larabar with me…cashew cookie and peanut butter cookie are my faves. An organic banana with some crunchy, unsalted almond butter & organic, raw trail mix= life saver!

+ Cocktail of choice?

BT: Kettle One vodka & water ( not soda water ) with three lemon slices. Delicious & refreshing!

+ Motivation to stay in shape?

BT: I’ve always been active through dance, sports, & working out. I’m motivated by the simple fact that I know for sure that I’m going to feel better afterwards. If that’s not enough, living in San Diego & embracing the beach lifestyle requires a shorts, tank top, & a bikini ready body during all seasons!

+ World’s best beauty product?

+ Natural beauty remedy that you do?

- Lots of naps, sex, and wine!

+ Quick, easy recipe?

“Beanwah” ( beans+quinoa )

1 cup tri color quinoa

2 cups low sodium vegetable stock

1 teaspoon coconut oil

1 teaspoon red or yellow curry sauce ( or any yummy flavorful sauce you have )

1 big handful of raw kale ( they sell it in bags all cut and trimmed, way easier than buying the whole stalk & doing it yourself )

Organic black beans ( canned & whole is fine-I get mine at Trader Joe’s )

+ Directions: Put all ingredients except for beans in a rice cooker. Be sure to rinse your quinoa, it has a bitter outer shell that’s no bueno. Once cooked, fluff rice cooker stuff w/ a fork. Heat beans ( nuke ‘em in the micro! ). Mix together, salt and pepper to taste, and WALA! BEANWAH!

* Sauteed tempeh or tofu is a good add-on, or some freshly steamed veggies too!

+ 10 Things to Improve your Skin:

1.] Everyone should use a Vitamin C serum.

Specifically L-ascorbic acid, as opposed to a serum labeled just Vitamin C. This helps maintain normal cellular turnover & builds collagen. L-ascorbic acid is essential for cross-linking collagen molecules, lightens & brightens skin, reduces inflammation, decreases transepidermal water loss, & boosts your own skins ability to protect itself from the sun. Wear Vit C under a SPF moisturizer.

2. ] Wear SPF daily:

 Wear a moisturizer with a SPF 30 or higher every single day. This is the most important thing you do to protect your skin from premature aging! The sun causes 80% of aging. Hyperpigmentation, enlarged pores, damages the collagen, & elastin fibroblast are also caused by sun…The list goes on. Also, 90% of women forget to protect their neck & chest! This is the worst when you’re driving in the car or you endure incidental sun exposure [ waking to and from your car ]. So I suggest just putting a little more than a pea size amount all over your neck & chest after your L-ascorbic acid for maximum results. For a natural sunburn soother, use oatmeal with water!

3.] Exfoliate:

Something that has stuck with me the most over the years was a woman who came to my work as a trainer at Sephora. I managed the South Coast store & did all their corporate training. She said “the best thing you will ever do for your skin is exfoliate.” She was fifty, but looked thirty…and mind you, this was before Botox! My best analogy is that exfoliating your skin is like flossing your teeth. As we age our skin’s ability to turn over cells slows down. This is called your desquamation process. So we need to exfoliate manually via “scrub” as well as “chemical” exfoliation. Some examples of this are glycolic, salicylic, & lactic acids.

4.] Keep hydrated:

Our bodies are 70% H20. If you drink water all day it will show in your skin!

5.] Lots of rest:

Wonder why photo shoots for celebrities and models are done in the AM? Night time is our time for restoring & healing of all cells in our bodies. Your skin will literally look renewed, refreshed, & rested.

6.] Get a facial:

At home care is if utmost importance. If you want to make things even better for your skin, resort to the professionals. A basic facial will give your skin the boots it needs to jump start fresher skin.

7.] Keep your skin hydrated:

So yes, water is important. Our skin is the largest organ in our bodies. We loose hydration by the elements. Sun, wind, pollution. Hyaluronic acid that is found naturally in the dermis of your skin holds a thousand times its own weight in moisture. It’s a moisture binder.

8.] Acne prone skin:

Most people don’t know this: it’s hereditary. Keeping your skin hydrated is key in caring for acne. If you over dry your skin it thinks it needs to produce more oil.
