Mini DeLites

{ Ok, so quick story: my friend, Erica & I always say WWOD to each other when we’re in a pinch for fashion. What’s it mean? Well, obviously: ‘What Would Olsen’s Do.’ You know, like MK & Ashley Olsen. So a typical convo would be “should I wear these houndstooth jacket with these snakeskin boots?” & she’ll say “WWOD.” Are we weird? LOL. Anyway, on my birthday she gave me the sweetest, most special gift: she handmade this embroidered cloth with our little saying. It currently hangs in the closet next to vintage Barbie. It’s so cute, right?! }

{ A lil Monday ‘mocktail’ }

Lately I’ve been allllllllll about ‘mocktails.’

Mocktails look like a cocktail, kinda taste like a cocktail, & require a little garnish like a cocktail…

…but they have no alcohol…that’s right: zero, zilch, zip, nada, nothing. Hence why they’re called “MOCK-tails.”

Get it?

Clever, right…( but kinda not really ).

This skinny mocktail contained: two big splashes of guava kombucha ( but use whatever flavor your little heart desires ), one cup of sparkling water, one tablespoon of chia seeds, & tons of Meyer lemon over ice. Garnish with a lemon slice ( if you guys are interested in more of my mocktail recipes, let me know below— I have a bunch! ).

Ever since I came back from our Palm Springs getaway, I’ve felt a strong need to clean out my system.

I like to check myself before I wreck myself & practice super strict discipline every once in a while.

So basically this month there will be no frisky cocktails nights or vino girl nights.

{ Lately: over perfectly curled hair, I’m all about the bed head/air dried look }

{ Summer reusable ice cubes…& hey, they don’t dilute wine— genius, right?! }

And honestly with no alc, I feel amazing! I’ve lost some weight, my skin is clearer, & I literally hop out of bed like Jack in the Box.

Even though I love a little wine every now & then, cleaning out my bod a couple of times a year is a good reset.

Ya know?

Anyway, this month I’ll be staying in a lot & doing some major reading. Some of the books on my list: anything Bret Eastern Ellis, The Goldfinch, The Book Thief, & Restless Souls: The Sharon Tate Story.

Does anyone else have any amazing, must-reads?? Please share— I literally LOVE book recommendations! ( I’m specifically a huge fan of non-fiction & autobiographies- #TSCbookclub ).

Happy Monday! x.

Lately I’ve Been Eyeing…

The Skinny Confidential talks fashion.

black tank || rose gold ring || pinstripe top || white handbag || BLK DMN perfume || chambray top

Today I wanted to share a couple of pieces I’ve been eyeing…

I’m especially obsessed with pinstripes so this hottie top from The Dreslyn needs to get in my closet…like ASAP. And how cute does it look ( above ) with that black fedora?!

All of the other pieces can be found on The Dreslyn. I’ve talked about the site before because it’s my go-to when it comes to staple pieces that will last forever. Some of my favorite brands they carry are Carven, BLK DNM, & Opening Ceremony.

When it comes to fashion I’m obsessed with mixing highs & lows  ( this is obvious from my latest home post ), but if I’m buying a higher end item it needs to be a staple. Basically…I avoid trends like the plague.

What’s your favorite, absolutely have to have staple?

Happy weekend! x.

Styling The Home

Ahhh!! Prepare for picture overload.

Since the cat’s outta the bag that Michael & I don’t live together, today I figured I’d share a peek inside my home.

Obviously it’s feminine because before moving in with my man, I wanted to live…well, pretty.

Little backstory: my stepmom, Julie has a blog called Burlap & Crystal. She specializes in home design. The second I moved into my place I called Julie. We were so excited to work on this home project together. I feel like the whole time we were on the same wavelength. Our goal: for each space in the house to tell a story. So each nick of the house is essentially a different experience i.e. the bar cart, desk area, patio. Julie said:

“if I had to put a label on Lauryn’s style, I’d say it is a multi-dimensional combination of glam meets bohemian with an occasional visit from a rocker.”

She also went on to say: “we really worked together to accomplish the ultimate goal…a home where Lauryn walks in the door and feels…completely at HOME.”

You can read about Julie’s experience here

First off, we did a lot of bargain shopping. I’m kind of obsessed with mixing high end & low end pieces. I mean…let’s just say I’ve never met a Home Goods, Marshall’s, or Target I didn’t like. I swear all three of those stores always have the best finds.

So when we first started styling my home we decided to add a lot of pieces you won’t really expect as home decor. Such as? Whelp, white gum balls, shoes ( yes, shoes ), purses, & lipsticks:

Some of my favorite finds:

♡ ] Lipstick holder

♡ ] Coffee table books ( Chanel // The Skinny Confidential Book }

♡ ] A gold bar cart

♡ ] Pretty candles

♡ ] Diffusers

♡ ] Rose gold cutlery

Another big piece of the home decor puzzle was the desk.

Since I’m constantly on the computer ( like, it’s actually embarrassing the amount of time I spend hooked to screen ), I wanted a very zen, white space. White is calming. So we choose pieces such as my grandma’s vintage monkeys, a Brigitte Bardot piece, & tiny healing crystals to style the desk:

It was really important to me that the house didn’t feel clutters. So we kept things simple but also made sure that there were little interesting trinkets everywhere. & of course, each trinket tells a story.

One of my favorite pieces in the house is this tiny, teal unicorn. It’s so simple but so cute. Michael & I found him in New York City ( similar avail here ). He sits on my desk & watches me blog:

Julie painted me the above patio set—she’s seriously so talented! She found the chairs & table at a consignment store for $300 bucks & really gave them a personal touch.

Also, call me weird but I wanted a fully styled closet.

So now my closet has shoes displayed, vintage Barbie pictures hanging on the walls, & little gold necklace holders. Shocking but the closet is my favorite area in any house…

…besides the kitchen. I love the kitchen too. We went for a minimal look using ‘contain/keep/crush’ kitchenware, a giant white tea kettle, & a big round ‘lazy Susan’ which holds a couple pale teal bowls & rose gold cutlery.

Around the house are gold touches but I tried to avoid gaudy gold. I especially love this little foil print that I found on Etsy:

Ok, so I’m a big fan of pieces that are different heights in the home.

If you look closely, everything is different heights.

For instance, there’s a super tall candle holder on my living room table. But then I had shorter candles, a medium sized diffuser, & stacked books that were lower to the table. Mixing up dimensions make all the difference when styling a room.

Kate Moss was kinda a theme in my house too. Her style is so spot on that I wanted to have a couple black & white photos of her in her high fashion days.. I also love a woman’s body ( << the body is a beautiful thing!! ), so you’ll find a lot of feminine ( sometimes nude! ) figures/watercolors around my house too.

As far as the bedroom, I decided not to share because ya gotta keep some stuff private ; ). Putting my bedroom on the Internet just didn’t feel right.

Oh! And case in anyone’s wondering…Pixy resides in her printed tipi where she conducts some serious monkey business:

Anyway I hope you enjoyed my home tour. Special thanks to Julie— she’s truly freaking amazing.

Burn, Baby, Burn…Let’s Talk About That Metabolism

The Skinny Confidential talks diet, fitness, and health.

So the other day my godmother, Jennifer had the BEST analogy.

First off, she’s super savvy when it comes to diet/health in general so I really respect her opinion.

Ok, so she said “your metabolism is like a fire, if you don’t add wood it dies down.”

Uhhhhhhhh wowowow.

So simple but so good, right?

Here’s the deal: I’m constantly running around like a bat-shit psycho so in the past I’d sometimes completely forget to eat for hours.

But ew, not anymore.

Lately I’ve been eating every couple hours ( mostly small snacks ) to keep my metabolism at its prime.

First I did my research by Googling her simple saying & shocker (!!!!) this lil gem popped up: “imagine you live in a home that is heated by a wood stove. Now imagine there is a pile of newspapers, a pile of twigs and a pile of logs near the stove. You wake up early in the morning and it is very cold. You look over at the heavy logs and think to yourself “too much work”, so you build a fire out of newspapers and twigs. The fire roars, the heat spreads and fills the room and you sit back basking in the heat. However, the fire is very short-lived, it burns out within a few minutes and you find yourself “feeding” it again. Still too lazy to put a log on the fire, you again burn twigs and newspapers. You repeat this process over and over until all the newspapers and twigs are gone. Now you have no choice, you go over to the pile of logs, select one and place it in the stove. However, it is very hard to ignite since you no longer have any kindling to start it. The log just sits in the stove. You sit in the cold, thinking that maybe you should have burned the log sooner. Therefore, it is very important to “put a log on the metabolic fire” at every meal. What is the “metabolic log”? Protein and fat are the metabolic logs of your diet. They are slow burning fuels. They will smooth out the roller coaster ride of rising and crashing blood sugars that a person eating a high carbohydrate diet experiences.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself.

In my case I like starting the day with a sunny side up egg or two with a side of avocado & a low carb piece of sprouted grain toast ( lately I die over this brand’s bread ). I also like to add a little Ghee or real butter to the toast & drink a cup of tropical green tea. ( Side: instead of ketchup on eggs I use Himalayan pink salt & tons of chili flakes for spice ).

This sets the tone of my day.

Then every couple hours I’ll add a metabolic log to my metabolic fire.

Make sense?

Some smart “logs” to add to your “fire?”

Whelp, my preferences include: berries, super green-y green juice, tuna fish, sashimi, eggs, smoked salmon, a smoothie, organic turkey cold cuts with country mustard, real ( like, real, real ) hummus, a tangerine, apple, banana, almonds, raw almond butter, &/or spaghetti squash.

The point is that not eating all day & then having a huge-ass dinner doesn’t cut it…like, at all. Actually it’s hurting your metabolism. Not eating enough slows the metabolism & screws with hormones. So pretty much you can’t change your metabolism ( boo ) but you can improve it ( yay ).

Don’t believe me?

According to this source ( & many others ) “when the body feels like it is being starved, it will go into ‘ration mode’ and conserve its excess fat for as long as possible. This is helpful if you are, in fact, starving, but not if you are trying to lose weight. The body’s metabolic rate is decreasing to conserve energy. If you really hope to burn off excess fat, you want your metabolism running in high gear!”

So basically…eat more frequently ; ).

Other ways to fire up your metabolism: eat whole/clean foods, exercise regularly ( duh ), & drink a lot ( a lot, a lot ) of water.

Burn, baby, burn…x Lauryn
