Short Workouts With A Real Big Payoff

The Skinny Confidential talks diet and fitness.

The busier I get, the less time I have to sweat.

I know, I know this sounds depressing but actually it’s been a blessing in disguise.

Why?

Because I’ve learned how to workout smart, in a shorter time frame ( think 25 to 30 minutes ) and I burn double the calories.

Say what?!

Basically I’m doing interval workouts all the time now.

Intervals get heart rate super high & then bring it back down throughout a workout. Remember when I did this post on running? Ok so, I’m doing that but on an Elliptical for thirty minutes three days a week. I wear a sexy, lil heart rate monitor & bring my heart rate up & down throughout the workout. BTW: 30 minute intervals is way more effective than steadily going on the Elliptical for an hour straight.

Also, with 30 minute intervals I’m burning calories hours after the workout.

The metabolism functions much better with intervals because it logs serious overtime after completing the workout.

Love!! I mean, right?!

The other three days a week I’m doing TSC workout plan ( which I’ll share in the next couple months ). These are 27-30 minute workouts that will kick your ass. Again, perfect for busy girls on the go. The workouts are good old fashioned squats, lunges, tricep dips with a Skinny Conf flare. Each day was put together in a meticulous way to help people ( & myself ) attain tone & lose fat as quick as possible.

This source states: “less time in the gym doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice fitness if you know this secret: Interval training. Research shows that interval training—workouts in which you alternate periods of high-intensity exercise with low-intensity recovery periods—increases fitness and burns more calories over a short period of time than steady-state cardio ( you know: just doing the same thing for your whole workout time ).”

Another source goes on to say “your body likes to be on cruise control, because that’s where it’s most gas efficient. But when you push on the gas pedal, as you do in intervals, your body becomes less efficient and has to burn more calories to do the activity. And these quick-but-killer efforts may be the closest thing you’ll find to a magic calorie-burning bullet. You not only log less sweat time ( which is kinder to your body ) but also continue to incinerate calories at an increased rate even during the walking or jogging recovery periods.”

An hour workout is awesome every once in a while…

BUT honestly? An hour in the gym five days a week just isn’t realistic ( for me, at least ).

Side: there’s a lot of fitness bloggers out there that are balls-to-the-walls freaking gnarls, man.

They eat, live, and breathe fitness.

That’s just not my style. To each its own though— if you’re in to that, cool, but you probably won’t like this blog!

My mentality is keep the workouts quick, effective, & accessible.

Anyway, I’m super excited to share TSC fitness program with you guys! I can’t wait!

In the meantime, cut the hour shit out. Go to the gym— push yourself to the limit in those 30 minutes. Get your heart rate up. Sweat. And then? GTF outta there!! You got a life to live!

If you’re spending more time at the gym than you do at home, stop! If you’re working out for hours a day, stop! If you think more is more, it’s not!

Keep it simple, stupid.

Anyone with me? x lauryn

Thank you for this post! I feel it makes a healthy lifestyle way more attainable! I have never been a lover of exercise and I’m not majorly overweight or anything…well maybe by LA standards I am.:) I’m definitely not in the shape you are, but I appreciate that you are pushing an attainable level of fitness for those of us that don’t love working out. Funny thing is, the more I work out, the more I want to. So the small expectations actually accomplish great things! I do appreciate not feeling the push to spend my life in the gym, I will admit. I love your posts! Keep up the wonderful work you do, lovely!!

Yes, I definitely agree that high intensity or intervals is the way to go for cardio, and you can finish it within 25-30 minutes. No more bouncing on the elliptical for an hour with a magazine, which just doesn’t get the job done. I recommend that most of my personal training clients do three sessions of 30 minutes of cardio per week, in addition to two-to-three strength training sessions and some stretching (via yoga or on their own). I just wrote a 30-minute treadmill routine based off intervals here: http://aladygoeswest.com/2014/07/07/my-workouts-and-a-30-minute-treadmill-routine/

The 7 minute workout apps are another great way to start doing shorter interval workouts! It’s all body weight so you can do the work outs anywhere. I do 3-4 circuits while watching Netflix and I’m drenched in sweat!

Hi Lauryn! I totally agree with you. I’ve been loving 30 min workouts. I alternate with 5 min intervals on the treadmill where I will run as long as I can and then walk. Then 5 min intervals of jump squats, planks, wall sits, step ups, etc. Feels great to get an intense workout in and be done so quickly!!!

Looove your book BTW. Preordered a copy a long time ago. It’s on my coffee table. XO

I only do interval training at the gym too! The main reason is because I get SUPER bored doing the same thing for an hour straight. On cardio days I sprint and jog/walk for 20 minutes or so and then do the stair master for 15 mins.

Can’t wait to hear your other tips! :) I love my Nike free’s too!

Ooh I cannot wait to see your workout plan! I’ve just started doing HIIT and am loving it – 5/6 days a week in the gym is not possible with my lifestyle either – bring on the HIIT! XO, D

    Hey Lauren,

It sounds like the TSC workout plan is like Kayla Itsine’s Bikini Body Workout with the plyos plus high intensity interval training workouts in between circuit days. Is there a big difference between the two? I’m doing Kayla’s and it’s grueling but makes a difference, but I’m interested in what

I am with you! I really admire fitness models for their dedication and really great tips, but like you said, it is their life. All of your tips are always so great, thank you Lauryn! I simply adore you!

So true! A nice hour workout is great every once in a while when you want to workout but don’t really want to “think”. And I love a nice long run! I think the reason so many fitness bloggers live, eat, breathe, sleep being a BEAST is because to stay competitive in that genre you have to. Not for me! Can’t stand reading that day in and day out. I’ll take TSC method any day ;)

LOVE THIS POST! I’m so sick of people becoming obsessed with health to the point where it IS their life. It makes me sad. Exercising and eating healthy are suppose to be a way to enjoy life more, but not what life is about.
I take care of my health as a means to enjoy the most important things in life more fully because I’ve found that when I take care of myself I can do more and enjoy things more (duh).
I’m really into HIIT workouts too! I like to find a balance between HIIT, yoga, and long runs – all exercises I LOVE! And that’s what it’s about anyway. I’m excited to see your workout plans!

This sounds like a great way to keep fit quickly and effectively. Juggling a full time job, plus hobbies and a social life can be hard, so keeping a good fitness regime in line can be very difficult- thank you for your tips and tricks. I have been wanting a pair of the Nike Free-runs for the longest time and now you’ve given me a good reason and a great opportunity to justify this craving. Thank you Lauryn!
