Traditional Pilates= Tight, Toned Abs

Lauryn Evarts talks with Cindy Jansen, Pilates expert from Carmel Valley, California.

Lauryn Evarts talks with Cindy Jansen, Pilates expert from Carmel Valley, California.

Who doest want to tighten up that annoying muffin top area? Classic Pilates does wonders for the core/obliques/abs. My girlfriend, Simone and I take private Pilates lessons from the amazingly toned, Cindy Jansen. I have done group classes, however taking private lessons makes all the difference in the world. Cindy is constantly reminding us to pull our abs in, squeeze our legs tighter, & contract our butt muscles. Afterwards, we’re sore in all the right places. Since working out with Cindy has transformed the way I view Pilates, I had to interview her ASAP:

+ Describe yourself:

Authentic, passionate, positive, caring, & recently I became a wife [ marriage is the best! ]. I also run & operate a fully-equipped Pilates studio in our home. I have been teaching for twelve years. I feel extremely passionate about teaching Pilates & feel one of my strengths is giving each of my clients the personal attention they deserve. Pilates has become such a rewarding part of my life, & I love seeing it make a positive impact on my clients’ lives as well.

+ Tell us all about Classical Pilates.

‘Pilates’ can be divided into two fundamental schools of thought, Classical Pilates & Modern/Contemporary Pilates. Classical Pilates is the purest form of Pilates, as it strictly adheres to the original methods of exercises developed & taught by Joseph Pilates. Classically trained instructors, like myself, are able to trace our training back to Joseph Pilates through one of his first generation students. I received my training in NYC under the world-renowned protege of Joseph Pilates, Romana Kryzanowska. Romana was one of Joseph Pilates’ closest students & took over as director of his studio a few years after his death. Romana’s Pilates is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious, comprehensive, & rigorous instructor training programs existing today.

Pilates is intended to be a complete philosophy of training the body & mind to achieve uniform precision & control of one’s body in the most efficient, healthy way possible. The non-impact, balanced series of movement emphasize complete concentration, body alignment, correct breathing, making the torso or ‘powerhouse’ work, allowing the rest of the body to move freely. The result is a restoration of muscular balance, better posture, increased flexibility, & better support of the bones and joints.

+ Quick skinny tip?

I rely on this energy packed smoothie to get me through my busy day and it only takes about 5 minutes to make. It includes: protein powder, 1 tablespoon of Green Vibrance, 1 tablespoon bee pollen for energy, blueberries, raspberries, 1 cup of Almond milk, & a handful of pumpkin seeds

+ Skinny cocktail of choice?

Diet Stevia soda & Vanilla Stoli. I have been drinking this since college and still love it!

Quick, easy go-to snack that is healthy?

Gluten-free pumpkin zucchini muffins from Jimbo’s; I love them!

+ What else should people mix in with Pilates?

Cardio, cardio, cardio which helps burn fat & maintains weight, while Pilates reshapes and tones the body. Oh, and of course a healthy diet!

How many times a week should one do Pilates to see changes?

Two to three times a week & you will definitely see results. “In ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty sessions you will see the difference, and in thirty sessions you will have a different body.” That’s a quote from Joseph Pilates.

+ One word to describe Pilates?

EMPOWERING.

[ Essential bar tools ]

In celebration of Michael’s birthday, I’m going to talk cocktails. Recently, he has taken up a fun, new hobby: bartending. We’ve been experimenting with the freshest ingredients & all different kinds of spirits. I thought I despised gin. Turns out, I don’t hate the juniper tasting liquor at all when it’s used properly. Below are the recipes for four DIY cocktails with fresh, skinny ingredients. Happy birthday, hunny!

Skinny Cocktail List:

+ French 75:

1.5 ounce gin [ my preference Hendrick's gin ]
1/2 ounce of simple syrup [ we make our own- see below for recipe ]
1/2 ounce fresh squeezed lemon juice
3 splashes of French champagne

+ Instructions: over ice, in a tall glass, add simple syrup, gin, & lemon juice. Stir gently together. Top with champagne. Garnish with lemon peel.

+ Gin-Gin Mule:

2 ounces gin
3/4 ounces fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 ounce ginger syrup [ DIY recipe below ]
Ginger beer [ to taste ]
8 fresh mint leaves

+ Instructions: add mint leaves, ginger syrup, & lime juice to a mixing glass. Muddle until mint aroma is released. Add gin & ice. Shake until cold. Strain into an ice-filled Collins glass. Add ginger beer & garnish with fresh mint.

+ Clover Club:

1.5 ounce gin
1 ounce simple syrup
3/4 fresh squeezed lemon juice
6 raspberries
1 egg white [ yes, an egg white ]

+ Instructions: add simple syrup & raspberries to a shaker & muddle gently. Add lemon juice, gin, and egg white to a shaker. Dry shake with no ice to mix egg in. Add ice, shake until cold, double strain into cocktail glass with ice. Garnish with lemon peel.

+ Grapefruit Tom Collins:

2 ounces gin
1/2 ounce of fresh squeezed lemon juice
1/2 ounce fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
1 ounce simple syrup
3 ounces of Perrier sparkling water

+ Instructions: add gin, lemon juice, grapefruit juice, & simple syrup to mixing glass. Add ice, shake, and strain over ice-filled Collins glass. Add Perrier sparkling water and stir gently. Garish with a grapefruit wheel, halved.

P.S. Use real fruit to make your fresh juices! And here are the fresh syrup recipes:

++ Simple Syrup:

1 cup organic sugar
1 cup of water

+ Instructions: add water & sugar to a saucepan and boil over low heat. Stir until all the sugar dissolves & it’s clear. Bottle the syrup [ a funnel does wonders here ] & put it in the refrigerator.

++ Ginger Syrup:

2 ounces fresh ginger, thinly sliced
1 cup organic sugar
1 1/2 cup water

+ Instructions: combine ginger, sugar, & water in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and stir until sugar is dissolved. Continue simmering for thirty to forty minutes or until syrup smells gingery. Remove from heat and cool completely. Strain the syrup through a fine sieve, transfer to a bottle, & refrigerate. Cheers!

No one likes the Freshman 15

Lauryn Evarts, fitness blogger with skinny tips and tricks that promote weight loss.

Hi Beauties! Let’s talk about the dreaded Freshman 15…

Here is a grocery list for college students [ that have no refrigerator access ] who feel trapped into eating cafeteria food, late-night pizza + ranch dressing, and/or mac n’ cheese at 3 am:

+ Pirate’s Booty [ best kind: the lunch pack bags for kids aka the Sponge Bob kind ]
+ Cuties Clementines
+ Cashews + dried organic Turkish apricots
+ Almond butter packets [ I like putting these on bananas/apples/pears ]
+ Apple chips
+ Smart Food popcorn clusters
+ Veggie or sweet potato chips [ I like this brand ]
+ Ezekiel cereal [ mix this with Rice Milk- which doesn't have to be refrigerated ]
+ Wasabi peas
+ 1/2 of a Lara bar
+ Laughing Cow light cheese wedges

Lauryn Evarts, fitness blogger with skinny tips and tricks that promote weight loss.

Just because you’re actively making an effort to eat healthy, doesn’t mean portion control shouldn’t still be demonstrated. Tips for portion control:

+ Never, ever eat out of bag/box- pour it in a small bowl [ think a miso soup-sized bowl ]
+ Buy small glass wear, bowls, plates, wine glasses, etc. There’s no reason to eat out of a swimming pool-sized bowl.
+ Portion examples: nuts = a handful, fruit = 2 tangerines, chips/popcorn/pretzels = miso soup-sized bowl

Stock up your dorm room or kitchen ASAP- there’s no reason to not have quick, low-cal snacks laying around for when you’re in a pinch!

Oh, and say buh-bye to soda- it’s a disgusting, horrible chemical & causes bloat.
